Riyadh ul Haq (born 1971) is a British Islamic scholar. [1] He has been lecturing and teaching as the lead scholar at Al Kawthar Academy, Leicester since 2004. [1]
Riyadh ul Haq was born in the village of Nani Naroli, Gujarat, India in 1971 and moved to Leicester at the age of three with his father who was an Imam at one of the mosques in the city. [1] His father, Muhammad Gora, [2] [3] was a scholar and the family were treated with a lot of respect by the community. [1]
In 1984, aged thirteen Shaykh Riyadh ul Haq enrolled at Darul Uloom al Arabiyyah al Islamiyyah, Bury, UK. Due to his academic abilities, he was fast-tracked into adult classes within a year of arrival at the seminary. [1]
He has ijazah (authorisation) in various Islamic sciences from Yusuf Motala and the late Islam ul Haq. He also has ijazah in ḥadīth from Mahmood Hasan Gangohi and Muhammad Yunus Jaunpuri of Mazahir Uloom, Saharanpur, India. [4]
After his graduation, he became the Khaṭīb of Birmingham Central Mosque at the age of 21. [1] [5] He was recruited as the Khaṭīb not only for his scholarship but also because of his ability to deliver the Friday sermon in Urdu, English and Arabic. [1] At this time he also began teaching ḥadīth at Madinatul Uloom al Islamiyyah, Kidderminster, UK. Until 2003, Riyadh ul Haq served as the honorary headmaster of Madinatul Uloom Al-Islamiyyah, where he was previously Sadr Mudarris (head teacher/dean of the faculty). [6]
Since 2004, Riyadh ul Haq has been the lead scholar at Al Kawthar Academy, Leicester. Al Kawthar Academy has been described as one of the "most important part-time Islamic colleges" in the UK. [1] The Al Kawthar Academy offers a range of Islamic educational courses including up to alim -level. Riyadh ul Haq is accredited with developing the curriculum for their seven-year alim course, taught with 12 hours of study per week. [7]
Since graduation he has devoted himself to the work of religion and actively engaged in propagation of Islam and teaching. He has taught and commented on numerous classical Islamic works and has lectured extensively on a range of topics including Qurʼānic tafsīr, ḥadīth, aqīdah, fiqh and spirituality. He has also travelled widely, teaching and lecturing in various countries in the Middle East, Africa, Europe and North America. [8] Many of his sermons and lectures are recorded and are widely available. He has also authored two books, The Salah of a Believer in the Quran and Sunnah [6] [9] [10] and 'Causes of Disunity' [11]
One of Riyadh ul Haq's most notable contributions to Islamic scholarship has been his detailed commentary of 'The Abridged Sahih al-Bukhari'. [12] which is a comprehensive collection of ḥadīth (sayings and actions of Muhammad). This collection is considered the most important book after the Qur'an for Sunni Muslims. [13] [14] At the time that ul Haq began these lectures in 2001 it was noted that this was the first time that these aḥadīth had been taught in English in a systemic, detailed and thorough manner to the lay public. [15] [16] He has always argued that the hadith are an integral part of Islam and that fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) cannot be understood without the hadith.

Alongside teaching of hadith, Riyadh ul Haq focuses on spirituality (tazkiyah). His spiritual teachings, which date back around 20 years, [18] focus on reformation of the character and purification of the soul. [1] His spiritual chain (silsila) is well-documented. Short excerpts from his spiritual discourses are published online. [19] These make it clear that his spiritual teachings cover a range of topics including social etiquettes and responsibility, love, and family ties. His emphasis on tazkiyah has led to him being labelled as a 'Sufi' and attacked by madkhali groups. [20] [21]
His expertise and experience is sought by many charities, organisations and bodies for whom he regularly lectures for. These include assisting with humanitarian appeals such as Ummah Welfare Trust's, [22] 'Cries of the Ummah' appeal, [23] as well as local community work within Leicestershire (for example Leicestershire Youth Awards 2008 with the Federation of Muslim Organisations). [24] He has also been involved in assisting the work of Halal Monitoring Committee (HMC). [25] [26]
Ul Haq was listed in the 2010 Third Edition of 'The 500 Most Influential Muslims' published by Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre. [27] It states: "Abu Yusuf Riyadh ul Haq is a very influential speaker and leading Deobandi scholar in the UK. He has been markedly influential through his work with the Al Kawthar Academy in Leicester. Al Kawthar is a leading Islamic educational institution at the forefront of knowledge proliferation through diverse media forms." [27]
Ul Haq was also listed in the 2012 Second Edition of 'The Muslim 500: The World's 500 Most Influential Muslims 2012' [28]
In September 2007, The Times published a news item by Andrew Norfolk accusing Riyadh ul Haq of being the "homegrown cleric who loathes the British" [29] and a commentary article from the same author claiming there was a "hardline takeover of British mosques" led by ul Haq. In an opinion piece by the same author on the same date there was a claim that ul Haq was in line to become the spiritual leader of the Deobandi 'sect' in Britain, despite allegedly having extreme views. [30] Andrew Norfolk published further opinion articles in The Times calling the Deobandis historically anti-British, [31] including an article about another Deobandi scholar, Muhammad Taqi Usmani. [32] [33]
Andrew Norfolk's articles have been criticised by various Muslim groups and commentators. [34] Andrew Norfolk's analysis of Deobandis was apparently based on a police report. However, it has been suggested that the source was a report written by an external consultant for the City of London Police, which had been in circulation for over a year before The Times article. [35] The consultant, Mehmood Naqshbandi himself writes 'the attention given to a presumed cadre of extremist and foreign imams preaching in mosques is seriously misplaced'. [34] [36]
Amongst the immediate responses, 'The Guardian carried a "Comment is Free" opinion article by Inayat Bunglawala, media secretary for the Muslim Council of Britain, calling Norfolk's work a "toxic mix of fact and nonsense". [37] The Muslim Public Affairs Committee UK (MPACUK) claimed on their own web-site that even the Berelvis were coming out in defence of Riyadh al Haq. [38] MPACUK also referred to the attacks on ul Haq as a "decapitation strategy" because he pro-actively advocated political activism. [39]
Riyadh ul Haq joined religious leaders and the wider Muslim community in Leicestershire in condemning the murder of Lee Rigby in May 2013. He 'expressed his deepest sadness and condemnation at what unfolded in Woolwich'. [40]
The Deobandi movement or Deobandism is a revivalist movement within Sunni Islam that adheres to the Hanafi school of law. It was formed in the late 19th century around the Darul Uloom Madrassa in Deoband, India, from which the name derives, by Muhammad Qasim Nanautavi, Rashid Ahmad Gangohi, Ashraf Ali Thanwi and Khalil Ahmad Saharanpuri after the Indian Rebellion of 1857–58. They opposed influence of non-Muslim cultures on the Muslims living in South Asia. The movement pioneered education in religious sciences through the Dars-i-Nizami associated with the Lucknow-based ulama of Firangi Mahal with the goal of preserving traditional Islamic teachings from the influx of modernist, secular ideas during British colonial rule. The Deobandi movement's Indian clerical wing, Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, was founded in 1919 and played a major role in the Indian independence movement through its participation in the Pan-Islamist Khilafat movement and propagation of the doctrine of composite nationalism.
The Darul Uloom Deoband is an Islamic seminary in India at which the Sunni Deobandi Islamic movement began. Uttar Pradesh-based Darul Uloom is one of the most important Islamic seminaries in India and the largest in the world. It is located in Deoband, a town in Saharanpur district, Uttar Pradesh. The seminary was established by Muhammad Qasim Nanautavi, Fazlur Rahman Usmani, Sayyid Muhammad Abid and others in 1866. Mahmud Deobandi was the first teacher and Mahmud Hasan Deobandi was the first student.
Sahih al-Bukhari is the first hadith collection of the Six Books of Islam. Compiled by Islamic scholar al-Bukhari in the musannaf format, the work is valued by Muslims, alongside Sahih Muslim, as the most authentic after the Qur'an.
Muhammad Yusuf ibn Suleman ibn Qasim Motala was a British Indian Sunni Muslim scholar, founder of Darul Uloom Bury and one of the disciples of Muhammad Zakariya Kandhlawi.
Mahmud Hasan Deobandi was an Indian Muslim scholar and an activist of the Indian independence movement, who co-founded the Jamia Millia Islamia University and launched the Silk Letter Movement for the freedom of India. He was the first student to study at the Darul Uloom Deoband seminary. His teachers included Muhammad Qasim Nanawtawi and Mahmud Deobandi, and he was authorized in Sufism by Imdadullah Muhajir Makki and Rashid Ahmad Gangohi.

He also served as vice-president of Wifaq ul Madaris Al-Arabia, Pakistan. He was involved in politics as a member of the political party Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam. He served three times in the National Assembly of Pakistan and was an active proponent of the Khatme Nabuwwat movement.

Abul Wafa Sanaullah Amritsari was a British Indian, later Pakistani, Muslim scholar and a leading figure within the Ahl-e-Hadith movement who was active in the city of Amritsar, Punjab. He was an alumnus of Mazahir Uloom and the Darul Uloom Deoband. He was a major antagonist of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad and the early Ahmadiya movement. He served as the general secretary of the All India Jamiat-i-Ahl-i-Hadith from 1906 to 1947 and was the editor of the Ahl-e-Hadees, a weekly magazine.
Abdul Haq Azmi was an Indian Islamic scholar who was a senior professor of hadith at the Darul Uloom Deoband. He was an alumnus of Darul Uloom Mau and Darul Uloom Deoband. His students included Mahmood Madani, Mohammad Najeeb Qasmi and Noor Alam Khalil Amini.
Madinatul Uloom Al Islamiya (MTU) is an Islamic boarding college in the county of Worcestershire near Kidderminster, England. It was one of the first Islamic seminaries for boys after Darul Uloom Bury, both of which were founded by the late scholar Yusuf Motala. The site was originally founded as a girls boarding college in 1987 and then refounded as a boys college in 1992.
Muhammad ibn Adam Al-Kawthari is a British Sunni Islamic scholar, jurist, mufti, researcher, founder and chief-Mufti of Darul Ifta Leicester and a teacher at Jamiah Uloom-ul-Quran Leicester. He has authored a number of books including Islamic Guide to Sexual Relations and Birth Control & Abortion in Islam. He has written a commentary to the Deobandi creed book Al-Muhannad ala al-Mufannad in Arabic language.
Aziz-ul-Rahman Usmani was an Indian Sunni Muslim scholar who served as first Grand Mufti of Darul Uloom Deoband. He is best known for his Fatawa Darul Uloom Deoband. His brother was Shabbir Ahmad Usmani.
Abdus Salam Chatgami was a Bangladeshi Islamic scholar, educator, writer and researcher. He was considered one of the prominent Islamic scholars of South Asia for his research work. Chatgami had served as the Grand Mufti in both Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Muḥammad Fayḍ Allāh ibn Hidāyat ʿAlī al-Islāmābādī, popularly known as Mufti Faizullah, was a Bangladeshi Deobandi Islamic scholar, mufti, poet, educator and a reformer. He was among early students to study at the Darul Uloom Hathazari. He was an alumnus of Darul Uloom Deoband and later served as the Chief Mufti of the Darul Uloom Hathazari. Nematullah Azami, also written as Nematullah Azmi and Ni'matullah Azami, is an Indian Islamic hadith scholar, a commentator on the Quran (mufassir), and a faqīh. He is the president of India's Islamic Fiqh Academy. He has also been serving as a senior lecturer at Darul Uloom Deoband for forty years.
Badre Alam Merathi was a mid-twentieth-century hadith scholar and poet originally from Meerut, initially migrated to Pakistan and eventually settled in Medina. Best known as the interpreter of Anwar Shah Kashmiri's teachings, he was a disciple of both Kashmiri and Shabbir Ahmad Usmani. Educated at Mazahir Uloom and Darul Uloom Deoband, he taught at both institutions and Jamia Islamia Talimuddin. During his tenure at Jamia Islamia Talimuddin, he compiled Fayd al-Bari, a four-volume Arabic commentary on Sahih al-Bukhari, published in Cairo with financial support from Jamiatul Ulama Transvaal, considered a masterpiece in hadith commentary. He was also associated with Nadwatul Musannifeen and authored Tarjuman al-Sunnah, a 4-volume hadith explanation designed for contemporary needs, widely acknowledged in academic circles. In his final years, he focused on teaching hadith in Prophet's Mosque, where many South Africans pledged allegiance to him, expanding his spiritual influence in South Africa.
Abdullah Maroofi is an Indian Islamic scholar, mufti, and writer who specialises in Hadith studies. Since 2001, he has been serving as a lecturer in the department of specialisation in Hadith at Darul Uloom Deoband and is currently the supervisor of the department.
Habibur Rahman Azami, also written as Habibur Rahman Qasmi Azmi, was an Indian Islamic scholar, writer, and expert in the field of biographical evaluation of hadith narrators. He served as a professor of hadith at Darul Uloom Deoband. He served as the 6th Editor-in-chief of Monthly Darul Uloom. He authored several books, including Shuyukh al-Imam Abi Dawud al-Sijistani fī Kitab al-Sunan, Tazkirah Ulama-e-Azamgarh, Ajodhya ke Islami Aathar, and Babri Masjid: Haqaiq aur Afsanay.
