Syed Ahmad Dehlavi (died 1894) was an Indian Muslim academician and hadith scholar who served as the second principal and Sheikh al-Hadith of Darul Uloom Deoband between 1884 and 1890. [1] He specialised in Islamic astronomy and mathematics. His students included Abdul Hayy Hasani,Murtaza Hasan Chandpuri,Mahmud Hasan Deobandi,Aziz-ul-Rahman Usmani,Muhammad Yasin Deobandi,Ubaidullah Sindhi,and Ashraf Ali Thanwi.
Syed Ahmed Dehlvi belonged to a Sayyid family in Delhi. His father,Maulvi Imamuddin,privately tutored Mughal princes,and his maternal uncle,Mir Syed Mehboob Ali Jafari,was a student of Shah Abdul Aziz Dehlavi. [2] [3]
Syed pledged allegiance to Qasim Nanawtawi in Sufism. In 1868 AD (1285 AH),he began his career as a teacher at Darul Uloom Deoband and succeeded Yaqub Nanautawi as the seminary's second principal and Sheikh al-Hadith (Senior Professor of Hadith) in 1886 (Rabi' al-Thani 1302 AH). He resigned from the seminary in 1890 AD (1307 AH) and joined Madrasa Jahangiri in Bhopal as a principal and rector at the invitation of Shah Jahan Begum. [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9]
During his tenure as principal at Darul Uloom Deoband,thirty students completed graduation in Dars-e-Nizami,including Ghulam Rasool Hazarvi and Murtaza Hasan Chandpuri. [10] [8] Mahmud Hasan Deobandi, [11] [12] Muhammad Yasin Deobandi, [13] Ubaidullah Sindhi, [14] Aziz-ul-Rahman Usmani, [15] Ashraf Ali Thanwi, [16] and Abdul Hayy Hasani were also among his students in Deoband and Bhopal,respectively. Mahmud Hasan Deobandi was an Indian Muslim scholar and an activist of the Indian independence movement,who co-founded the Jamia Millia Islamia University and launched the Silk Letter Movement for the freedom of India. He was the first student to study at the Darul Uloom Deoband seminary. His teachers included Muhammad Qasim Nanawtawi and Mahmud Deobandi,and he was authorized in Sufism by Imdadullah Muhajir Makki and Rashid Ahmad Gangohi.
Muhammad Yaqub Nanautawi (1833–1884) was an Indian Islamic scholar,and one of the earliest teachers of Islamic Madrassa in Deoband,famously called Darul Uloom Deoband in India. He was the first principal of Darul Uloom Deoband.
Murtaza Hasan Chandpuri (1868-1951) was an Indian Sunni Islamic scholar. He was a disciple of Ashraf Ali Thanwi in the Chishti order of Sufism.

Bilal Abdul Hai Hasani Nadwi is an Indian Islamic scholar,da'i,Hadith lecturer and author who has served as the Chancellor of Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama since 2023. He also serves as the General Secretary of the Payam-e-Insaniyat and a member of the executive council of Darul Uloom Deoband.
Sharif Hasan Deobandi was an Indian Islamic scholar and Muhaddith. He served as Sheikh al-Hadith at Darul Uloom Deoband from 1972 to 1977. He also worked as a professor of Hadith and Sheikh al-Hadith at Jamia Islamia Talimuddin in Dabhel for almost ten years.
Mahdi Hasan Shahjahanpuri (1882–1976),also known as Mufti Mehdi Hasan and Mahdi Hasan Gilani Qadri,was an Indian Islamic scholar and mufti. He served as grand mufti at Darul Uloom Deoband for twenty years. He was an alumnus of Madrasa Aminia and Darul Uloom Deoband. He was a student of Mahmud Hasan Deobandi and Kifayatullah Dehlawi. Along with jurisprudence,he also had access to hadith and biographical evaluation. His literary works include Rijāl-u-Kitāb al-Āthār,Sharh-u-Balāghāt-i-Muhammad FīKitāb al-Āthār,Al-la'ali al-Masnoo'ah fīal-Riwāyāti al-Marjoo'ah,and a critical commentary on certain ideas of Ibn Hazm in the Science of Hadith entitled As-Sayf al-mujalla 'ala al-Muḥalla. He has done research and commentary work on Muhammad al-Shaybani's two books,Kitab al-Hujjah AlāAhl al-Madīnah and Kitab al-Āthār.
Habibur Rahman Usmani (1860–1929),also written as Habibur Rahman Deobandi and Maulāna Habib al-Rahmān,was an Indian Islamic scholar,Arabic writer and poet,and an Islamic jurist. He served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor,then Vice-Chancellor for the VC Office of Darul Uloom Deoband,for nearly twenty-three years. He succeeded Hafiz Muhammad Ahmad as Grand Mufti of Hyderabad State for about one year. His students included Shabbir Ahmad Usmani,Manazir Ahsan Gilani,Muhammad Shafi Deobandi,Habib al-Rahman al-A'zami,Muhammad Idris Kandhlawi,Atiqur Rahman Usmani,Qari Muhammad Tayyib,Badre Alam Merathi,Hifzur Rahman Seoharwi,Saeed Ahmad Akbarabadi,Manzoor Nomani,and Yusuf Banuri.
Ghulām Rasool Hazārvi was an Indian Islamic scholar and one of the earliest teachers of Darul Uloom Deoband. He served as a teacher in Darul Uloom Deoband for about thirty one years. His teachers included Syed Ahmad Dehlavi and Mahmud Hasan Deobandi. His students included Abdur Rahim Popalzai,Anwar Shah Kashmiri,Asghar Hussain Deobandi,Hussain Ahmad Madani,Izaz Ali Amrohi,Kifayatullah Dehlawi,Manazir Ahsan Gilani,Muhammad Sahool Bhagalpuri,Muhammad Tayyib Qasmi,and Shabbir Ahmad Usmani.
Syed Abdul Hai Hasani (1869–1923) was an Indian Islamic scholar,historian,biographer,writer,Sufi,and Hakim. He served as the fourth Chancellor of Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama between 1915 and 1923. He was the father of Abul Hasan Ali Hasani Nadwi. His works include Nuzhat al-Khawātir,Al Hind Fil 'Ahd al-Islami,Ath' Thaqafat al-Islamiyya Fil-Hind,Yād-Ayyām,and Gul-e-Ra'na.
