New Zealand's Denis Petushinskiy originally won the silver with 5.55 metres, which would have been the new national record, but he tested positive for a banned substance, stanozolol. He was disqualified and his result annulled.

Denis Petushinskiy is a retired pole vaulter who represented New Zealand after switching from Russia in 1998. He improved from 5.70 metres in 1992 to 5.90 metres in 1993 to win the Russian Championships. Later that year he finished sixth at the World Championships.

Stanozolol pharmaceutical drug

Stanozol, sold under many brand names, is an androgen and anabolic steroid (AAS) medication which was derived from dihydrotestosterone (DHT). It was developed by American pharmaceutical company Winthrop Laboratories in 1962, and has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for human use, though it is no longer marketed in the USA. It is also used in veterinary medicine. Stanozolol has mostly been discontinued, and remains available in only a few countries. It is given by mouth in humans or by injection into muscle in animals.
