Cavender's Store, which has also been known as Edwards' Store and The Brick, in Villanow, Georgia, is believed to be the oldest freestanding country store in the state of Georgia. [2] It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. [1]

Villanow is an unincorporated community in Walker County, Georgia, United States, which lies between Dalton and LaFayette. There are currently no schools that serve the community of Villanow. Armuchee Valley Elementary School was closed in 1992, following a fire that destroyed the classrooms and offices. In 1993, a separate fire destroyed what remained of the school, to include the cafeteria. In September 2010, the Armuchee Valley Community Center opened. The community center houses Walker County's No. 14 fire station, in addition to a sheriff's office, and voting precinct.

The National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) is the United States federal government's official list of districts, sites, buildings, structures, and objects deemed worthy of preservation for their historical significance. A property listed in the National Register, or located within a National Register Historic District, may qualify for tax incentives derived from the total value of expenses incurred preserving the property.

It is a one-story front-gabled, brick commercial structure made of hand-made bricks on a rock foundation. Its brick walls are 18 inches (0.46 m) thick, laid in American bond. It has iron tie rods. [2]

It was designed in the Beaux Arts style by Darlington native William Augustus Edwards who designed several other South Carolina courthouses as well as academic buildings at 12 institutions in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. An arcade connects it to the adjoining Abbeville Opera House and Municipal Center, which Edwards also designed. In 1964, the courthouse was renovated by Lyles, Bissett, Carlisle, and Wolff of Columbia. On October 30, 1981, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. It is included in the Abbeville Historic District.

The Third Addition to Rockville and Old St. Mary's Church and Cemetery is a historic area located at Rockville, Montgomery County, Maryland. This area combines 19th century residential scale buildings with a tree-lined narrow street, country church, weathered headstones, Victorian Gothic railroad station, and a brick cast-iron front commercial structure, to create an atmosphere that evokes the era when the station served as the gateway to Rockville. In addition to Victorian Gothic, architectural styles used in residential buildings include Queen Anne, Georgian, and Colonial Revival. St. Mary's Church is significant as the County's first brick Roman Catholic church, and the handsome hardware store is the area's last surviving cast-iron brick commercial structure. The Old St. Mary's Church Cemetery is the final resting place of author F. Scott Fitzgerald, his wife Zelda Fitzgerald and his daughter Frances Fitzgerald.

The IOOF Hall and Fromberg Co-operative Mercantile Building was built in 1906 at the west end of downtown Fromberg, Montana. It was the first brick building in Fromberg and served historically as a department store and as a meeting hall. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.

Lewis Store

The Lewis Store, also known as the Fielding Lewis Store, is a historic commercial building located at Fredericksburg, Virginia. It was built in 1749, and is a two-story, front-gable, three-bay Georgian style brick store. The second story addition was built in 1808. The building was rehabilitated between 2000 and 2006. The first story consists of a "sales room" on the front and a "counting room" on the rear. The building functioned as a store until 1823, after which it was used as a residence. It was built by John Lewis and operated by him and his son, Fielding Lewis, who was married to George Washington's sister Betty Washington Lewis. Fielding and Betty Lewis built the nearby Kenmore. The Lewis family sold the store in 1776.

William Barker Whiskey Bonding Barn

The William Barker Whiskey Bonding Barn is a historic site near Molena, Georgia. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 12, 2008. It is located at 9450 Old Zebulon Road. The barn dates to around 1870 and was constructed by William Thomas Barker (1839-1902), a farmer in Pike County, Georgia. Bonding barns and warehouses for the storage of whiskey were established by the U.S. Congress in 1868 in order to delay the payment of federal excise taxes while the whiskey was aging, up to four years. After the temperance movement, the barn became a store for tenant farmers. It is now used for various festivals, exhibitions and special events.

The Ewell Brown General Store is a commercial property in Lake Park, Georgia, located at the junction of Railroad Ave. with Lawrence Street, across the street from the railroad. It is a one-story Folk Victorian commercial building built out of brick about 1890. A brick sidewalk with a herringbone pattern was built in the early 1900s. The inside is one large room with a raised office space. The store was originally a drug store and general merchandise store. Ewell Brown bought the store in 1899 and along with his brother, Bob, operated it was a general merchandise store. Bob took over the store in 1948 and it closed in 1953 or 1954, due to the realignment of US 41, which caused a decline in trade. Then it was used for storage except that it was rented for an antique store from 1974-1976. In 1994 the daughter of Bob Brown donated it to the Lake Park Historical Society to use as a museum. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 21, 1997. The building now houses the Lake Park Museum, which includes collections of family histories and artifacts.

Brick Store is a historic building in Covington, Georgia. It was built in 1821 and served as a focus point for the community, also known as Sun Up, Georgia, Mt. Pleasent, Georgia or Brick Store, Georgia. It has been a general store, stage coach stop, post office, school house, courtroom, jail and residence for Martin Kolb. The first session of Newton County Superior Court was held at the Brick Store. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 9, 2009. The building is owned by the Trustees of the Newton County Historical Society. It is located on U.S. Route 278 at Old Social Circle Road.

Brown–Graves House and Browns Store

Brown–Graves House and Brown's Store is a historic plantation complex located near Locust Hill, Caswell County, North Carolina. The plantation house was built about 1800, and is a two-story, five bay, Late Georgian style frame dwelling. It is set on a stone basement and has a low hipped roof. The front facade features a one-story pedimented porch with Corinthian order columns. Brown's Store is located across from the house and is a one-story, gabled frame building with a single shouldered stone and brick chimney. Also on the property are the contributing two slave quarters, a smoke house, and a Greek Revival period law office.

Fred Gottschalk Grocery Store

The Fred Gottschalk Grocery Store is a historic grocery store building located at 301 West Edwards Street in Springfield, Illinois. Fred Gottschalk opened his first store at the site in 1887; he built the present building in 1898. The brick building has a Commercial style design with a cast iron storefront and a corbelled cornice. The store, one of several groceries in the area, served many of Springfield's prominent politicians and their families; it also allowed its customers to purchase goods by telephone. Gottschalk and his son Arthur ran the store until 1971; the building is now one of the few surviving neighborhood groceries in Springfield.

Tom Smith House

The Tom Smith House is a historic house on Arkansas Highway 74, east of Elkins, Arkansas in Washington County. It is a single-story brick structure, with a side gable roof, end chimneys, and a four-bay front facade. The bricks, which were locally made, are four courses deep, and end in a cornice shaped out of S-shaped molded bricks, an extremely rare detail. The front facade is asymmetrically arranged, with two doors in the center bays and sash windows in the outer bays. Built c. 1834, it is a rare regional example of late Georgian architecture, and is historically significant for its builder, Thomas Smith, who was one of the earliest white settlers of the area. The house stands behind a more recent frame house on more than 30 acres (12 ha) of land on the north side of AR 74.

Edwards-Fowler House

The Edwards-Fowler House in Rocky Top, Tennessee was built between 1835 and 1838 on land given to Nicely Ross Edwards and husband Edward C. Edwards by Nicely's father, James Ross. Ross gave the couple 300 acres (120 ha) and several slaves, who provided labor to build the house, which has been called The Hemlocks after the two massive hemlock trees that grow in front of the house. The Edwards family owned the house from 1838 until about 1900 when the Fowler family, originally from Knoxville, Tennessee, bought the house. The house has remained structurally unchanged for over 175 years, making the Edwards Fowler house the oldest and only Federal-style house in Anderson County, Tennessee.
