The Centra Building (also known as the Centra Hotel, United BankBuilding and Holiday Inn Christchurch City Centre) was a former office tower and hotel in central Christchurch, New Zealand. It was designed by architect Peter Beaven in the post-modernist Christchurch style, and was the eighth tallest tower in the central city prior to its demolition.
Built in the late 1980s, the Centra Building was originally built as an office tower for the headquarters of the United Building Society, which later became United Bank. In the mid-1990s, it was acquired by Philip Carter and remodeled as a hotel. In 2004, it rebranded as Holiday Inn Christchurch City Centre, and became colloquially known as the Holiday Inn building.
The Centra building was damaged in the 2011 Christchurch earthquake, and was demolished in October 2012. The site sat vacant under Carter's ownership until the 2020s, when resource consent was granted in 2022 to build a new retail space on the site.
The Centra Building was designed by architect Peter Beaven in his late career. He is thought to have drawn inspiration from the Manchester Unity Building in Christchurch (later known as SBS House) and the Canterbury Provincial Council Buildings. [1]
Construction on the Centra Building began in 1986, with the laying of the foundations in June that year. [2] In 1988, the external cladding was added as the building took shape. [3] The property was completed in 1989. [1]
The Centra building featured a car park basement with a transformer helping supply power to nearby properties. There were 16 concrete Dycore floors, a mezzanine area, and the penthouse roof was made from copper, covering two levels supported by a steel structure. [4] [1] In the early configuration of the building, there was a colonnaded banking chamber and multiple levels of uniform office space. [1] The basement had a substation in it. [5]
The Centra Building was originally developed as an office tower, [6] and was home to the United Building Society which later became United Bank. [7] [8] [9] [1]
Around 1995, Philip Carter of Carter Group purchased the property and began work to redevelop it into a hotel, undertaking a project estimated to have cost up to NZ$17M. [6] It was originally called the Centra Hotel before being rebranded in 2004 as Holiday Inn Christchurch City Centre. This is not to be confused with the Holiday Inn Avon, another Christchurch hotel which was owned by Carter. [6] [10] [11]
In 2009, the hotel was significantly refurbished, including the lobby, bar, and 120 guest rooms, helping it receive a Qualmark 4 Star Plus rating. The project was undertaken by Dalman Architecture Limited and cost NZ$2.5M, according to Carter. [12] [6]
The Centra Building was severely damaged in the 2011 Christchurch earthquake. It was permanently closed and cordoned off in the Christchurch red zone area.
In February 2012, Carter announced the project to demolish the tower was out for tender, but wouldn't elaborate on the condition of the building at the time. [6]
Demolition began in October [13] undertaken by Nikau Group. It was later claimed that the structure was considered high risk of collapse, resulting in a more complicated demolition process. [14] [4] The famous Twinkle Toes excavator was brought in to help rapidly deconstruct the building. [13] Beaven later described the destruction of the buildings he designed, including the Centra Building, as a "huge, shattering loss." [15]
The site remained unused for over a decade, with the basement level partially exposed to the elements. [16] A plan to rebuild Ao Tawhiti school on the site fell through in 2016; the school had previously announced it would build and occupy a property on the land by 2017. Carter declined to comment on his plans, but claimed in 2015 he had "endeavoured to enable the return" of the inner-city school. [17] [18]
In 2017, the Christchurch city council included the former Centra Building site on their "dirty 30" list of properties considered dangerous or eyesores, regarding it as a hindrance to the rebuild effort. [16]
In 2022, Carter Group received resource consent to build on the site. The new property will likely be used for retail and office space, and has no connection to the former property other than its location. [19]
Christ Church Cathedral, also called ChristChurch Cathedral and (rarely) Cathedral Church of Christ, is a deconsecrated Anglican cathedral in the central city of Christchurch, New Zealand. It was built between 1864 and 1904 in the centre of the city, surrounded by Cathedral Square. It became the cathedral seat of the Bishop of Christchurch, who is in the New Zealand tikanga of the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia.
Ao Tawhiti or Ao Tawhiti Unlimited Discovery is a state area school in Christchurch, New Zealand. The school is one of eleven schools running under the "Designated Special Character" criteria of the Education Act 1989.
The Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, sometimes referred to as the Christchurch Basilica or the Catholic Cathedral, was a Catholic cathedral on Barbadoes Street in central Christchurch, New Zealand. It was the mother church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Christchurch and seat of the Bishop of Christchurch. It was not a basilica, despite sometimes being referred to as one: the term was used because its design was similar to some European basilicas.
Twinkle Toes is the largest excavator in the Southern Hemisphere. It was used in Christchurch to demolish tall buildings following the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes before moving to Wellington following the 2016 Kaikōura earthquake.
The Hotel Grand Chancellor was a major four-star hotel in the centre of Christchurch in New Zealand, one of eleven Hotel Grand Chancellor establishments across Australia and New Zealand. The hotel was located at 161 Cashel Street, close to the city's City Mall central shopping precinct.
Warner's Hotel in 50 Cathedral Square, Christchurch is the site of a hotel established in 1863. The original building, extended on numerous occasions, burned down in 1900. A new building was built in 1901. Again, it underwent numerous alterations. A fourth storey was added in 1910 and the northern end of the building was demolished in 1917 and a theatre built in its place to create a noise buffer to the printing presses of the adjoining Lyttelton Times Building. The theatre was demolished in 1996 and patrons enjoyed a beer garden. In 2010, a high-rise Novotel hotel opened on the site of the beer garden and in the process, the historical and symmetrical 1901 façade was recreated.
The Chief Post Office or Christchurch Central Post Office, originally known as the Government Buildings, is located in Cathedral Square, Christchurch, New Zealand. The building was initially a post office with Immigration, Customs and Public Works departments. The Government Buildings were later replaced by the new Government Buildings opened in 1913, and the Chief Post Office remained on-site. In 1881, New Zealand’s first telephone exchange was installed in the building. Post services were offered from the building until 2000 when it was re-purposed to house a Christchurch tourist information centre and a restaurant, café and offices. Following the 2011 Christchurch earthquake the building closed. In the early 2020s repairs and strengthening took place. The building was planned to reopen in 2023 in stages, and eventually include a restaurant, shops, and a visitor information centre, under the name "The Grand". The structure is registered with Heritage New Zealand as a Category I heritage building.
Peter Jamieson Beaven was a New Zealand architect based in Christchurch, who lived for his last few months in Blenheim. He was a co-founder of New Zealand's first heritage lobby group, the Civic Trust.
Aidanfield is a suburb in the south-west of Christchurch, New Zealand, about 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) from the city centre. The land, which had been owned by the Good Shepherd Sisters since 1886, now incorporates the Mount Magdala Institute and the St John of God Chapel, which has a Category I heritage listing by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust. The first residents moved into the suburb in 2002. The developer caused controversy in 2007–2008 by applying to have a group of farm buildings demolished to allow for further subdivision. Christchurch City Council was widely criticised for approving the demolition despite the buildings having had a heritage listing in the Christchurch City Plan.
The Westpac Canterbury Centre was a landmark tower on the corner of High Street and Cashel Street in the center of Christchurch, New Zealand. In the early 2010s, it was considered the 9th tallest building in Christchurch, standing at 55 metres tall with 13-storeys and a basement level.

Latimer Square is an urban park in central Christchurch, New Zealand. It is located 400 metres (440 yd) east of the city's centre, Cathedral Square. Many commemorative events take place in Latimer Square. The square lies between the major urban thoroughfares of Gloucester Street and Worcester Street. Madras Street runs north and south to Latimer Square. The square is grassed and crossed by concrete paths and edged by mature trees. It covers an area of a little over 1.8 hectares.
The Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament is the planned successor of Christchurch's former Catholic cathedral which was damaged in the 2010 and 2011 Canterbury earthquakes and later demolished in 2020. This makes the cathedral the future mother church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Christchurch. Initially, the cathedral was to be located on the corner of Armagh and Colombo Streets, opposite Victoria Square. However, on 21 April 2024, Bishop Michael Gielen announced the cathedral would be returning to the Barbadoes Street site, formerly occupied by the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament.
Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre is a convention centre located in Christchurch Central City, New Zealand. The centre is a replacement for the previous Christchurch Convention Centre that was demolished after the 2011 Christchurch earthquake. Originally known as the Convention Centre Precinct, construction was funded by the New Zealand Government as part of the Christchurch Central Recovery Plan. The centre is owned by the Crown through Rau Paenga Crown Infrastructure Delivery Ltd state-owned enterprise, and managed by ASM Global. The polysemous name Te Pae is "inspired" by the Māori language, and can roughly be interpreted to mean "gathering place".
The Fisher's Building was a 19th-century Venetian Gothic building located in central Christchurch, New Zealand. It was designed in 1872 by architect William Armson and constructed from concrete and brick in 1880 on a central city site leased to Thomas Richard Fisher, who ran a tea and grocery store. The building was known for its prominent verandah, ornate design, and distinct corner shape.
The Hallensteins Building was a contemporary tower in central Christchurch, located on the High Street end of City Mall. It was sometimes referred to as the Unlimited Northern Tower due to its use as the main Unlimited Paenga Tawhiti campus building. The tower had five floors with a modern exterior, large glass windows, balconies, and a mezzanine floor on the top floor.
