Charles Richard Jeremy Elwes (born 15 July 1997) is a British national representative rower. He is an Olympic medallist and two-time world champion. [2]
Elwes was educated at Radley College where he took up rowing. He then attended Yale University where he rowed in the Yale senior 1st eight in 2015/16 and 2016/17 inter-collegiate racing seasons. [3] His senior club rowing in England has been from the Leander Club.
After Yale, Elwes went up to Oxford to study medical ethics. He rowed at six in the Oxford crew which won The Boat Race 2022. Also in 2022, he won the Grand Challenge Cup (the blue riband event at the Henley Royal Regatta), rowing for Leander. [4]
Elwes first achieved national selection for Great Britain while still a schoolboy when selected in a junior coxed four to race at the 2013 Junior World Rowing Championships. [5] In 2014 he was again selected in the GB junior men's 4+ and racing in that crew with his Yale and future world champion crewmate Thomas Digby, Elwes won a silver medal at the Junior World Championships. Elwes & Digby stayed in that crew for the 2015 Junior World Championships and won another silver as a coxless four. [5]
In 2017 Elwes moved into the Great Britain U23 representative squad. In the GB U23 coxless four he achieved podium finishes at three successive U23 World Rowing Championships - silver in 2017; silver in 2018 and gold (and an U23 world championship title) in 2019. [5]
2021 saw Elwes selected in the five seat of the Great Britain senior men's eight. They won a European championship gold medal in Varese, Italy [6] [7] and won at the World Rowing Cup II. At the delayed 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Elwes won Olympic bronze in the British men's eight. [8]
2022 saw Elwes retain the five seat in the Great Britain men's eight. In that international season the crew won gold at two World Rowing Cups and at the European Rowing Championships. [9] Elwes in the that boat went on to win gold and a world championship title at the 2022 World Rowing Championships in Račice. The following year in 2023, he won a second successive world championship gold medal in the men's eight at the 2023 World Rowing Championships in Belgrade. [10]
Thomas James MBE is a British rower, twice Olympic champion and victorious Cambridge Blue. In a British coxless four in 2012 he set a world's best time which still stood as of 2021.
Matthew Langridge is a British rower. At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London he was part of the British crew that won the bronze medal in the men's eight. He was the 2015 European Champion in the men's pair, along with James Foad. At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro he was part of the British crew that won the gold medal in the men's eight.
Richard Schmidt is a German former representative sweep-oar rower. He is a six time world champion, a four time Olympian, an Olympic gold & silver medallist and held a seat in the German senior men's eight — the Deutschlandachter — constantly from 2009 to 2021. He rowed at seven when the Deutschlandachter at the 2017 World Rowing Cup II set a world's best time of 5.18.68, which was still the standing world mark as of 2021.
James Foad is an English rower. At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London he was part of the British crew that won the bronze medal in the men's eight. He was the 2015 European Champion in the men's pair, along with Matt Langridge.
George Christopher Nash is a British rower. He is dual Olympian, dual Olympic medal winner and three time world champion.
Polly Swann is a British rower and a member of the Great Britain Rowing Team. She is a former World and European champion in the women's coxless pairs, having won the 2013 World Rowing Championships at Chungju in Korea, and the 2014 European Rowing Championships at Belgrade, Serbia with her partner Helen Glover. At the 2016 Summer Olympics she won a silver medal in the women's eight.
Hannes Ocik is a German representative rower. He is a three-time world champion, twice an Olympic silver medallist and a five time gold medal winner at European Rowing Championships in the German senior men's eight — the Deutschlandachter. He stroked the German eight consistently from 2015 including their three world championship wins during their dominant period from 2017 to 2019. He was also at stroke at the 2017 World Rowing Cup II when the Deutschlandachter set a world's best time of 5.18.68, which was still the standing world mark as of 2021.

He competed and won medals in the Australian senior men's coxless four at every World Rowing Championship from 2013 to 2018, culminating in consecutive world championship gold at Sarasota 2017 and 2018 Plovdiv.
