The eight is a rowing event held at the Summer Olympics. [1] The event was first held for men at the second modern Olympics in 1900, with races taking place on the Seine in Paris, [2] and has been held at every Games since. The women's event was added when women's rowing was added to the Olympic programme in 1976, [3] and has been held at every Games since 1996, it is the only Olympic rowing event that uses a coxswain.

The 1906 Intercalated Games or 1906 Olympic Games was an international multi-sport event that was celebrated in Athens, Greece. Rowing has been part of the Summer Olympics since its debut in the 1900 Games. Rowing was on the program at the 1896 Summer Olympics but was cancelled due to bad weather. Only men were allowed to compete until the women's events were introduced at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal which gave national federations the incentive to support women's events and catalysed growth in women's rowing. Lightweight rowing events were introduced to the games in 1996. Qualifying for the rowing events is under the jurisdiction of the World Rowing Federation. World Rowing predates the modern Olympics and was the first international sport federation to join the modern Olympic movement.

Athletics has been contested at every Summer Olympics since the birth of the modern Olympic movement at the 1896 Summer Olympics. The athletics program traces its earliest roots to events used in the ancient Greek Olympics. The modern program includes track and field events, road running events, and race walking events. Cross country running was also on the program in earlier editions but it was dropped after the 1924 Summer Olympics.

The event was won by the United States, the third consecutive victory for the Americans in the event and fifth overall. Great Britain returned to the podium after a one-Games absence in 1924 broke a three-Games medal streak, taking silver this time. Defending silver medalists Canada took bronze.

The vault is an artistic gymnastics event held at the Summer Olympics. The event was first held for men at the first modern Olympics in 1896. It was held again in 1904, but not in 1900, 1908, 1912, or 1920 when no apparatus events were awarded medals. The vault was one of the components of the men's artistic individual all-around in 1900, however. The men's vault returned as a medal event in 1924 and has been held every Games since. Vault scores were included in the individual all-around for 1924 and 1928, with no separate apparatus final. In 1932, the vault was entirely separate from the all-around. From 1936 to 1956, there were again no separate apparatus finals with the vault scores used in the all-around. The women's vault was added in 1952 and has been held every Games since. The coxed pair was a rowing event held at the Summer Olympics. The event was first held for men at the second modern Olympics in 1900. It was not held in 1904, 1908, or 1912. It returned after World War I and was held from 1920 until it was removed from the programme following the 1992 Games, at which point it and the men's coxed four were replaced with the men's lightweight double sculls and men's lightweight coxless four. When women's rowing was added in 1976, only 6 of the 8 men's events had a women's equivalent; the coxed pair and the coxless four were the ones omitted. The coxed pair has never had a women's competition at the Olympics.
