The Ford Figo was a subcompact hatchback manufactured by Ford India in its Chennai and Sanand plants. Based on the Mark V European Ford Fiesta hatchback, the Figo has been sold in emerging countries between March 2010 and 2021. [1]

The Ford Figo was unveiled in Delhi in September 2009. [2] It is based on the same body used by the Fiesta Mk5 (B256) but with revised front and rear treatments. [3] It is smaller than the Fiesta Classic which Ford also sells in India. [2] The name "Figo" is a colloquial Italian word meaning "cool". [3]
It was launched to the Indian market in March 2010, and by July 2010 there were 25,000 sales bookings across all variants. [4] A facelifted model of the Figo was launched on 15 October 2012. This model has a larger hexagonal grill and redesigned head and tail lamps. It was released in South Africa in January 2013.
The Ford Figo available in both petrol and diesel versions, all with 5-speed manual transmissions and power steering as standard. Both engines meet the Bharat Stage - IV emission rules.
The Figo diesel is equipped with the same 1.4-litre engine which is currently powering the Ford Ikon and Ford Fiesta and the Indian petrol version is equipped with a new 1.2-litre The petrol variant gives a mileage of around 12.5 kmpl in the city while on the highway it offers around 15.5 kmpl. and the diesel returns a mileage of around 16 kmpl in the city while on the highway it delivers a mileage of 19 kmpl.
The Figo was available in a range of specifications including LXI, EXI, ZXI and Titanium. The Titanium adds alloy wheels, dual air bags and ABS.
The Figo underwent a facelift in October 2012 although the car remains unchanged mechanically and uses the same engines. [5]
The Mexican Ikon Hatch was available only with a 1.6-litre Duratec petrol engine producing 98 hp (73 kW; 98 hp) at 6500 rpm and torque of 142 N⋅m (105 lb⋅ft) at 4000 rpm.
The Figo was available with a 1.4-litre petrol engine with a manual gearbox or a 1.6-litre with a 4-speed automatic transmission, which is same as Ford Focus MKII.
The South African petrol Figo was powered by a 1.4-litre producing 62 kW (84 PS; 83 bhp) at 6000 rpm and torque of 127 N⋅m (13.0 kg⋅m) at 4000 and is available in Ambiente and Trend models.

The Ford Figo was manufactured at Ford's plant in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. The 100,000th Ford Figo produced for the Indian market was delivered 15 months after its launch. [6] The 200,000th Figo was sold during August 2012, after 29 months of production, [7] while the 300,000th Figo was made in first week of August 2013, after 41 months of production. [8]
The Ford Figo had ventilated discs at front and drum rear brakes. The top variant came with an Anti-lock braking system (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) which enhances the safety of the car by helping it stop in emergency situations.
During a crash, the Figo's engine automatically falls from the bonnet area to prevent the car from catching fire. Dual front airbags are available on a premium package.
The Figo for India with no airbags and no ABS received 0 stars for adult occupants and 2 stars for toddlers from Global NCAP in 2014 (similar to Latin NCAP 2013). [9]
The Figo had been awarded 20 Indian automotive industry awards, more honors than any other car in 2010. [10] [11] The Ford Figo was voted the 2011 Indian Car of the Year by a panel of leading automotive magazine editors. [12] It was also named runner-up in the 2011 South African Car of the Year Awards. [13]
A series of Ford Figo print ads were created by JWT India, including a caricature of former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi in the driver's seat with three scantily clad women sitting gagged and bound in the trunk, a Paris Hilton caricature winking from the driver's seat while Kim Kardashian and two others are gagged in the boot, and a caricatured Michael Schumacher with Sebastian Vettel, Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso lookalikes gagged in the back. All three featured the same tagline: "Leave your worries behind". [14]
The print ads were not approved by Ford, but were used as speculative renderings to promote the agency. [15] JWT breached trust and used an approval from Ford to use other poster ads made for Ford as a tacit approval to enter the adverts into the GoaFest 2013 Advertising awards and adsoftheworld.com. Ivan Razl of adsoftheworld.com confirmed that the ads were removed according to the rules of the website as the letter was only a generic approval and the said ads were not approved, which was confirmed to him by JWT. After the publication of the ads, Ford responded by stating that the posters were contrary to the standards of professionalism and decency within Ford and its agency partners. [16] JWT India's parent, WPP plc, apologized for the adverts. [17]
After the incident, JWT India chief creative officer and managing partner Bobby Pawar and Blue Hive creative director Vijay Simha Vellanki resigned; and a further ten employees were reported to have been laid off. [18]

Codenamed B562, [19] Ford India launched the second generation Figo in 2015, six years after the initial launch. [20] The second generation Figo came with "Aston Martin-esque" [21] front grilles. On the top end trims Titanium and Titanium+, the slats/bars and the grille surround are chrome plated. The lower trims get either Black or Silver painted grilles and grille surround. The second generation Figo is available in three engine options. The 1.2-litre petrol unit makes 88PS and 112Nm and comes mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. Ford also has a larger 1.5-litre petrol on offer which is only offered with a 6-speed Dual-clutch transmission. This unit makes 112PS and 136Nm. And lastly, there is also a 1.5-litre diesel, churning 100PS and 215 Nm.
A performance oriented Figo S was also available. It includes a stiffer suspension setup, along with a rear sway bar and bigger wheels to improve the dynamic nature of the car.
All variants were offered with dual-front airbags except the base variant, which only has a driver-side airbag. The top-end variant gets six airbags in total. [22]
It is equipped with an independent MacPherson strut with coil spring and anti-roll bar up front work in tandem with semi independent twist beam with twin gas and oil filled shock absorbers at the rear. [23]
Equipment highlights for the Figo included the MyFord Dock, first introduced on the Figo Aspire, which allowed occupants to easily charge their smart-devices and also use the same for navigation. [22]
The model was re-launched in February 2020 to comply with BS6 - Bharat Stage 6 norms, which went into effect in April 2020. [24] [25] [26]
Ford India issued a statement saying that they had initiated a voluntary recall for approximately 42,300 units of the new Figo and the Figo Aspire owing to problems in the Restraint Control Module (RCM). [27]
The software issue on the RCM can result in airbags not deploying in certain collisions. This may lead to loss of life. Ford stated that they will be carrying out software upgrade on the RCM on all affected vehicles across the country, free of cost. The recall applied to Figo and Figo Aspire units manufactured since the launch of both the vehicles until 12 April 2016.
The Aspire for India with no ABS received 3 stars for adult occupants and 2 stars for toddlers from Global NCAP in 2017 (similar to Latin NCAP 2013). [28]
The Indian-made Figo in its most basic Latin American market configuration received 4 stars for adult occupants and 4 stars for toddlers from Latin NCAP in 2019 (one level above 2010-2015). [29]
Ford India initially targeted 20,000 unit/month of average output for Figo and Figo Aspire from the Sanand, Gujarat plant. However reports [30] indicated that Figo hatchback sales declined by 60 per cent between October 2015 and March 2016, while Figo Aspire sales went down 74 percent from its launch in August 2015 and March 2016. This led to slash in production to 10,800 units a month.
The Figo, along with the Endeavour/Everest and EcoSport, was discontinued due to the Chennai and Sanand plants being closed. The Figo for the Mexican market was on sale until 2021. [31]
In 2018, a crossover-styled variant of the Figo was introduced, known as the Ford Freestyle. It is slotted between the Figo hatchback and the EcoSport. It is available with a 1.2-litre petrol engine and a 1.5-litre diesel engine. Both engines are mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. It is available in the following trims: Titanium and Titanium+. The Ford Ka is a small car manufactured by Ford Motor Company from 1996 to 2016 as a city car and from 2014 to 2021 as a subcompact car. It entered its second generation in 2008, produced by Fiat in Tychy, Poland. A third generation was introduced in 2016.
The Ford Ikon is a subcompact car produced by Ford since the end of 1999. It was initially introduced as the sedan version of the Ford Fiesta hatchback car. It spawned over two generations, the first being based on the fourth generation of the Ford Fiesta and bearing a similar front end design.
The Ford EcoSport is a subcompact crossover SUV (B-segment) manufactured by Ford between 2003 and 2023.
The Suzuki Swift is a supermini car (B-segment) produced by Suzuki. The vehicle is classified as a B-segment marque in the European single market, a segment referred to as a supermini in the British Isles. Prior to this, the "Swift" nameplate had been applied to the rebadged Suzuki Cultus in numerous export markets since 1984. The Swift became its own model in 2004. The Hyundai Accent, or Hyundai Verna is a subcompact car produced by Hyundai. In Australia, the first generation models carried over the Hyundai Excel name used by the Accent's predecessor. The Accent was replaced in 2000 by the Hyundai Verna in South Korea, although most international markets, including the US, retained the "Accent" name. The "Accent" name is an abbreviation of Advanced Compact Car of Epoch-making New Technology.
The Chevrolet Sail is a subcompact car produced by SAIC-GM, a joint venture of General Motors in China. Launched in 2001, it was sold as the Buick Sail in China, both in sedan and wagon form based on Opel Corsa B. Following the reintroduction of the Chevrolet brand in China in 2005, the car received a facelift, and its name was changed to "Chevrolet Sail" and "Sail SRV".
The Volkswagen Vento is a subcompact car produced by the Volkswagen India and Volkswagen Russia subsidiaries of the German manufacturer Volkswagen since 2010. It is essentially a three-box Volkswagen Polo with a stretched wheelbase and has been developed especially for some markets. The car is sold under the Vento nameplate in India, Malaysia, Brunei and Mexico. In Thailand, South Africa, Argentina, Russia, Jordan, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and the Middle East, it is sold as the Volkswagen Polo Sedan. The name Vento means 'wind' in both Italian and Portuguese. It is also known as the Volkswagen Polo Notch in the Philippines.
The Hyundai i10 is a city car produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 2007. It replaced the Hyundai Atos in the model line-up, and was initially available only as a five-door hatchback body style. The third generation i10 was unveiled in India on 7 August 2019 and launched on 20 August 2019, offered in 10 variants across petrol and diesel engines as well as manual and automatic transmissions. There is also a sedan derivative, the Hyundai Xcent and the Hyundai Aura.
Ford India Private Limited was a subsidiary of Ford Motor Company for its operations in India. Ford India Private Limited's headquarter were located in Sholinganallur, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Ford also had operated integrated manufacturing facilities in Sanand, Gujarat. On September 9, 2021, Ford exited the Indian market as it failed to keep up with the competition, and other global economic factors had led to reduction in demand. On 8 August 2022, Ford announced it would be selling its manufacturing plant in the western state of Gujarat for INR 7.26 billion to Tata Motors. Since 2021, Ford India has focused on the businesses of supporting a service network, import and distribution of automotive parts, and the sale of extended warranties.
The Volkswagen Polo Mk5 is the fifth generation of the Polo, a supermini-class car manufactured by Volkswagen since 2009. The vehicle unveiled at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show in March 2009, while the three-door version was unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2009. A four-door long-wheelbase sedan version has been produced and sold outside Europe in several emerging markets since 2010 either as the Volkswagen Vento or the Volkswagen Polo sedan. A short-wheelbase sedan version was sold in India between 2016 and 2020 as the Volkswagen Ameo.
The Ford Focus (third generation), also known as the Focus Mk III, (Code name: C346) debuted at the 2010 North American International Auto Show as a 2012 model. The cars shown were a 4-door sedan and 5-door hatchback, also debuting a new 2.0-litre direct injection I4 engine. A 5-door estate (wagon) was previewed at the Geneva Motor Show a month later.
The Suzuki Celerio is a hatchback city car produced by the Japanese manufacturer Suzuki since 2008. Originally a rebadged Alto/A-Star city car for some markets, the Celerio was made as a global nameplate and a standalone model replacing the A-Star in 2014. Suzuki unveiled the second-generation Celerio at the Auto Expo 2014 in India, after being previewed as the A:Wind concept model at the Thailand International Motor Expo in November 2013. The third-generation model was unveiled in November 2021. In 2023, the third-generation model was also marketed by Toyota in African markets as the Toyota Vitz.
Tata Zest is a Subcompact sedan produced by Tata Motors. The car was revealed at Indian Auto Expo 2014 along with its hatchback version, the Tata Bolt. The car was launched in Indian markets on 12 August 2014.
The Suzuki Baleno is a subcompact car produced by the Japanese manufacturer Suzuki in India since September 2015 with a hatchback body style.
The Fiesta Mark IV was launched in October 1995 and became Britain's best-selling car from 1996 to 1998, when it was overtaken by the all-new Ford Focus, a replacement for the Ford Escort.
The fourth generationFord Focus, also known as the Focus Mk IV, is a small family car which has been produced by Ford from 2018. It was revealed in April 2018 to replace the third-generation Focus. As in the previous generation, the model is available with saloon, hatchback and estate body styles. This generation marked the demise of the Focus line-up in many regions, including North America, South America, and Southeast Asia, effectively limiting its market reach to just Europe, China, Taiwan, Australasia, and other minor markets.
The Mahindra XUV300 is a subcompact crossover SUV produced by the Indian automaker Mahindra & Mahindra. It is based on the X100 platform of KGM Tivoli and has been sold in the Indian market since February 2019. Mahindra slotted it in the segment along with their Bolero Neo to rival the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon and the Ford EcoSport.
The Ford Fiesta Mk5 is the fifth generation of the Ford Fiesta supermini built in Europe between April 2002 and 2008. The Fiesta continued to be built in Mexico until 2010 and in Brazil until 2014. Most engines were carried over from the previous Fiesta. This generation became the best-selling Ford Fiesta generation to date. This was the first Fiesta to be sold in Asia and Australasia, where it replaced the Kia-based Festiva.
The Ford Fiesta Mk6/Mark VI is the sixth generation of the Ford Fiesta supermini. The sixth generation Fiesta was shown in a concept car form as the Ford Verve at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2007, with introductions in Europe, the Americas, Asia, Australasia, and Africa. Developed under the project code B299 and B409, the model uses the Ford global B-car platform newly developed for the model.
