Historic sites are usually protected by law, and many have been recognized with official historic status. A historic site may be any building, landscape, site or structure that is of local, regional, national, or global significance. Usually this also means the site must be at least 50 years or older.
Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park is an American Civil War battle site that commemorates the Battle of Carnifex Ferry. It is located on the rim of the Gauley River Canyon near Summersville, a town in Nicholas County, West Virginia. The 156-acre (0.63 km2) park features Patterson House Museum, three views of the Gauley River, hiking trails and picnic facilities. It is one of the oldest state parks in the United States. A Civil War re-enactment takes place on a weekend after Labor Day. As Carnifex Ferry State Park, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
The Sesser Opera House is a historic theater located at 106 W. Franklin Ave. in Sesser, Illinois. The theater was built in 1914 to replace a previous theater, which had been built in 1904 and burned down ten years later. The theater was designed in the Mission Revival style and features a stucco interior, a large arch around the entrance designed to resemble an arcade, and a projecting eave topped with Spanish tiles. The theater was used for plays and vaudeville entertainment, traveling musicians, and showing films; its predecessor was the first theater in Sesser to be built with a projection room. The building also hosted local meetings and events as well as entertainment performed by community members.

The Newport Opera House is a historic civic building and performing arts venue at 20 Main Street in the heart of downtown Newport, the county seat of Sullivan County, New Hampshire, United States. Built in 1886, it was billed as having the largest stage in New England north of Boston, and continues to serve as a performance venue today. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as "Town Hall and Courthouse", in 1980, for its architecture and civic roles, and is a contributing property in the Newport Downtown Historic District.

The Phoenix Opera House Block is a historic building in Rushville, Illinois. Built in 1882, the building housed commercial businesses on the first floor and an opera house on the second floor. The opera house hosted traveling performers and theater companies as well as local social events. The opera house closed in 1910, as churches began to host the town's social functions and the local movie theater provided entertainment. From 1924 to 1956, the opera house served as a Masonic lodge. The building is one of the few surviving examples of a combined opera house and commercial building.
Earlville Opera House is a historic theater located in Earlville in Chenango County, New York. It was built in 1890 and occupies six of the eight units of the Douglass Block. The three story Opera House rises above the two story annex with the theater and balcony occupying the second and third floor, while storefronts are housed on the first floor. The heyday of the Opera House was from the 1890s to the 1920s; serving as a focal point for community activities and the arts beginning in 1892 and evolved through the decades by providing Vaudeville acts, three-penny operas, and travelling medicine shows, followed by silent movies and then “talkies” in the 1950's. Then, the realities of cars, drive-ins, and television forced the small second story theater out of competition, locking the doors in 1952, seemingly for good. In 1971 the building was threatened by demolition but purchased by artist and political activist Joey Skaggs and generously donated to the Earlville community for the express purpose of restoring, preserving, and continuing its cultural function in perpetuity. In July 1972, the Earlville Opera House, Inc., assembled a volunteer board of directors and began restorative work immediately; in 1974, the Opera House was named to the National Register of Historic Places; and in 1976, the Opera House saw its first live performance in more than fifty years. Since that time, the Opera House has operated as a volunteer-based, not-for- profit organization with a dual mission: "To enrichen the Central New York community through the visual and performing arts while preserving its historic building for future generations". Patrons near and far continue to benefit from the vision, determination and leadership of the Earlville Opera House in three different centuries, particularly during the 50 years since its rebirth as a multi-arts center dedicated to community building through presenting the highest quality of artistic programming with longevity. The Grand Opera House, commonly referred as The Grand, is a historic opera house located at the corner of High Avenue and Market Street in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, United States. It was built in 1883, designed by William Waters, a local architect, and underwent a major refurbishing in 2009–2010 at an expense of two million dollars. The roof trusses were reinforced, the ceilings were replaced, and a large chandelier was repaired. Additionally a new "Grand Lounge" was added for improved audience services and to smaller events. Today, the opera house seats 550, hosts nearly 100 public performances a year including community and repertory theater, symphony orchestra, corporate meetings and weddings; it is operated by the non-profit Oshkosh Opera House foundation. The theater was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

The Love-Larson Opera House is a historic building in Fremont, Nebraska. It was built in 1888 by James Wheeler Love, a former educator, to replace a former theatre demolished in 1887. The new building was designed by architect Francis M. Ellis. It was dedicated on December 14, 1888 with a performance by actress Minnie Maddern Fiske. Upon its purchase by L.P. Larson in 1905, it was renamed the L.P. Larson Opera House. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since September 10, 1974.
