HIP 13044 is a red horizontal-branch star about 2,300 light years (700 pc) from Earth in the constellation Fornax. [3] [5] The star is part of the Helmi stream, a former dwarf galaxy that merged with the Milky Way between six and nine billion years ago. [6] As a result, HIP 13044 circles the Galactic Center at a highly irregular orbit with respect to the galactic plane. HIP 13044 is slightly less massive than the Sun, but is approximately seven times its size. The star, which is estimated to be at least nine billion years old, has passed the red-giant phase. The relatively fast rotation of the star may be due to having engulfed one or more planets during the red-giant phase. [6]
A science team from the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy first observed HIP 13044 using Fiber-fed Extended Range Optical Spectrograph (FEROS) at the European Southern Observatory's La Silla Observatory in Chile. The first follow-up led to the collection of 36 radial velocity measurements taken between September 2009 and July 2010. [6]
The team also used photometric data that had been passively collected by and publicly released into the archive of the SuperWASP collaboration, which had been observing the region where the star was located. In this data, HIP 13044 was found to oscillate; the signal was blocked roughly every sixteen days. Analysis of the SuperWASP and FEROS data led to the supposed discovery of the planet HIP 13044 b, [6] although this claim was later refuted.
HIP 13044 is an F-type star located approximately 701 parsecs (2,286 light years) from Earth in the Helmi stream [6] —a group of low-metallicity stars moving with large velocities relative to the Sun. The star follows an eccentric galactic orbit, with a distance from the galactic center ranging from 7 to 16 kiloparsecs. [7] The orbit does not lie in the galactic plane, and can reach distances as high as 13 kpc above it. This indicates that it once was part of a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way that was disrupted 6–9 billion years ago. [3] The star itself is estimated to be at least nine billion years old. [7]
HIP 13044 is fairly evolved star fusing helium in its core, and has therefore already passed the red-giant phase of its evolution. [3] It lies near the blue end of the red horizontal branch bordering the instability strip. [3] Its surface temperature is about 6025 K and its radius is approximately 6.7 solar radii. HIP 13044's mass is estimated to be 0.8 solar masses. [7] Having a rotation period of 5–6 days, HIP 13044 is a fast-rotating star for its type. It is possible that this is because it has swallowed planets during its red-giant phase. [5]
HIP 13044 has an apparent magnitude of 9.94 and cannot be seen with the unaided eye. [7]
In 2010, it was announced that a giant planet in a 16.2-day orbit had been discovered by the radial velocity measurements. This would have had implications for planet formation in metal-poor systems and survival of planets being engulfed by expanded giant stars. [6] Subsequent analysis of the data revealed problems with the detection: for example an erroneous barycentric correction had been applied (the same error had also led to claims of planets around HIP 11952 that were subsequently refuted). After applying the corrections, there is no evidence for a planet orbiting the star. [8]

One of the 48 constellations listed by the second-century astronomer Ptolemy, it depicts a cup that has been associated with the god Apollo and is perched on the back of Hydra the water snake.
Gaia is a space observatory of the European Space Agency (ESA), launched in 2013 and expected to operate until 2025. The spacecraft is designed for astrometry: measuring the positions, distances and motions of stars with unprecedented precision, and the positions of exoplanets by measuring attributes about the stars they orbit such as their apparent magnitude and color. The mission aims to construct by far the largest and most precise 3D space catalog ever made, totalling approximately 1 billion astronomical objects, mainly stars, but also planets, comets, asteroids and quasars, among others.
Lacaille 8760 is a red dwarf star in the constellation Microscopium. It is one of the nearest stars to the Sun at about 12.9 light-years' distance, and the brightest M-class main-sequence star in Earth's night sky, although it is generally too faint to be seen without a telescope. At an apparent magnitude of +6.7, it may only be visible to the unaided eye under exceptionally good viewing conditions, under dark skies.
Chi Scorpii, Latinized from χ Scorpii, is a single star in the zodiac constellation of Scorpius. It has an orange hue and can be faintly seen with the naked eye with an apparent visual magnitude of 5.24. Based upon parallax measurements, this star is around 448 light years from the Sun. The star is drifting closer with a radial velocity of −23.6 km/s.
4 Ursae Majoris (sometimes abbreviated 4 UMa) is the Flamsteed designation of a star in the northern circumpolar constellation of Ursa Major. It also bears the Bayer designation of Pi2 Ursae Majoris (Pi2 UMa, π2 Ursae Majoris, π2 UMa) and is traditionally named Muscida. With an apparent visual magnitude of +4.6, this star is visible from suburban or darker skies based upon the Bortle Dark-Sky Scale. From parallax measurements made during the Hipparcos mission, this star is at a distance of 256 light-years (78 parsecs) from Earth. As of 2011, one extrasolar planet has been confirmed to be orbiting the star.
Nu2 Canis Majoris (ν2 Canis Majoris) is a single star in the southern constellation of Canis Major. It is a cool giant with two confirmed exoplanets.
Eta2 Hydri is a star in the southern constellation of Hydrus. The name is latinized from η2 Hydri and often catalogued as HD 11977. It is visible to the naked eye with an apparent visual magnitude of +4.68, and is one of the least variable stars known. The distance to Eta2 Hydri is approximately 221 light-years based on parallax measurements, but it is drifting closer to the Sun with a radial velocity of −18 km/s.
HD 70573 is a variable star in the equatorial constellation of Hydra. At a mean apparent visual magnitude of +8.7, this yellow-hued star is too dim to be visible to the naked eye. Based upon parallax measurements, it is located at a distance of 193 light years from the Sun, and is drifting further away with a radial velocity of 20.5 km/s. It is a candidate member of the proposed Hercules-Lyra Association of co-moving stars, although this membership is disputed.
HD 47536 is a single star in the southern constellation of Canis Major. It has an orange hue and is dimly visible to the naked eye with an apparent visual magnitude of +5.25. The star is located at a distance of approximately 408 light years from the Sun based on parallax. It is drifting further away with a radial velocity of 80 km/s.
HD 4113 is a dual star system in the southern constellation of Sculptor. It is too faint to be viewed with the naked eye, having an apparent visual magnitude of 7.88. The distance to this star, as estimated by parallax measurements, is 137 light years. It is receding away from the Sun with a radial velocity of +5 km/s.
HD 122430 is single star in the equatorial constellation of Hydra. It has an orange hue and is faintly visible to the naked eye with an apparent visual magnitude of 5.47. The star is located at a distance of 105.6 light years from the Sun based on parallax.
HD 213240 is a possible binary star system in the constellation Grus. It has an apparent visual magnitude of 6.81, which lies below the limit of visibility for normal human sight. The system is located at a distance of 133.5 light years from the Sun based on parallax. The primary has an absolute magnitude of 3.77.
An extragalactic planet, also known as an extragalactic exoplanet or an extroplanet, is a star-bound planet or rogue planet located outside of the Milky Way Galaxy. Due to the immense distances to such worlds, they would be very hard to detect directly. However, indirect evidence suggests that such planets exist. Nonetheless, the most distant known planets are SWEEPS-11 and SWEEPS-04, located in Sagittarius, approximately 27,710 light-years from the Sun, while the Milky Way is about 87,400 light-years in diameter. This means that even galactic planets located further than that distance have not been detected.
HIP 70849 is a star with two non-stellar companions in the southern constellation Lupus. It is a 10th magnitude star, making it too faint to be visible to the naked eye. The system is located at a distance of 78.7 light-years from the Sun based on parallax measurements.
The Helmi Stream is a stellar stream of the Milky Way galaxy. It started as a dwarf galaxy, now absorbed by the Milky Way as a stream. It was discovered in 1999, is formed of old stars deficient in heavy elements, and has a mass of 10 to 100 million solar masses. It was absorbed by the Milky Way some 6 to 9 billion years ago.
HD 218566 is a star in the equatorial zodiac constellation of Pisces. It has the proper name Ebla, after a kingdom in ancient Syria. With an apparent visual magnitude of 8.6, this ninth magnitude star can not be viewed with the naked eye. However, it can be readily seen even with a small telescope. It is located at a distance of 94 light years from the Sun based on parallax, but is drifting closer with a radial velocity of −37.8 km/s. The star hosts one known exoplanet, HD 218566 b.
HIP 11952 is a star in the Milky Way galaxy, located 375 light-years away from the Sun. While the spectral lines strongly indicate that the star is of spectral type F2V-IV, previous analyses have stated that the star is a G8III giant star and an F0V main-sequence star. Located in the constellation Cetus, the star has a metallicity only 1% that of the Sun. It is nearing the end of its lifetime on the main sequence, and will soon begin the transition into a red giant.
Chi Herculis, Latinized from χ Herculis, is a Sun-like star in the northern constellation of Hercules. Based upon an annual parallax shift of 63.16 mas as seen from Earth, it is located 51.6 light years from the Sun. The star is faintly visible to the naked eye with an apparent visual magnitude of 4.59. It has a relatively high proper motion, showing a transverse movement of 0.769 arc seconds per year and is drifting closer to the Sun with a radial velocity of −56 km/s.
HD 112410 is a star in the southern constellation of Musca. It has a yellow hue and is too dim to be readily visible to the average sight, having an apparent visual magnitude of 6.86. The distance to this star is 513 light years based on parallax, and it is drifting further away from the Sun with a radial velocity of 73 km/s. It has an absolute magnitude of 1.22.
71 Cygni is a star in the northern constellation of Cygnus, located 212 light years from the Sun. 71 Cygni is the Flamsteed designation; it has the Bayer designation g Cygni. It is visible to the naked eye as a dim, orange-hued star with an apparent visual magnitude of 5.22. The star is moving closer to the Earth with a heliocentric radial velocity of −21.5 km/s.
