The Insurance Exchange Building, formerly known as the Middough Building and the Middough Brothers Building, is a registered historic building located on Broadway in downtown Long Beach, California, USA. The eight-story Beaux Arts building was one of the largest office buildings in downtown Long Beach when it opened in 1925. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.

Description and history

The Insurance Exchange Building was known as the Middough Building when it opened in 1925. The eight-story office building was built by Lorne and Way Middough who moved their men's and boy's clothing store into the first floor. [2]

The newly formed Long Beach Municipal Court was one of the building's original tenants, moving into the third, fifth and sixth floors in July 1925. [3] The court remained in the building for five years until additional space was needed for other courts and county offices. [2]

In 1931, the Middough brothers sold the building, and its name was changed to the Insurance Exchange Building. [2]

With 28,000 square feet (2,601 m2) of floor space, the building was one of the largest office structures in downtown Long Beach. In 1958, the building was sold, and the new owners announced plans to remodel and modernize the building and to establish a "de luxe restaurant" on the top floor. [2] At the time of the sale in 1958, stockbrokers, Dean Witter & Co., occupied the ground floor, and other major tenants included Household Finance Co. and Veloz and Yolanda dance studio. [2]

In 1962, the building was sold again at a reported purchase price of $750,000. The new owner, Don Roberts Co. Inc. of Beverly Hills, announced plans to turn the building into a center for insurance companies and their representatives. [4]

In February 2003, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. [5] In 2007, the building was one of the first upgrade projects to be completed as part of The Promenade redevelopment of the downtown area. The upgrade project included a nightclub and Jamaican restaurant. [6]

Above the train station, covering the lower floors, were five floors of offices; and in the top three was the Jonathan Club, one of the city's leading businessmen's clubs introduced by magnates from the Northeast. After the “Great Merger” of Pacific Electric into Southern Pacific Railroad in 1911, the PE Building became the home of Southern Pacific in Los Angeles.

Johnies Broiler American restaurant in California

Johnie's Broiler, renamed in 2009 as Bob's Big Boy Broiler, is a restaurant located in Downey, California, that opened in 1958. From 2002 to 2006, the building and parking lot was used as a used car dealership. The building was largely demolished in January 2007. However, the restaurant was reconstructed in 2009 and has re-opened as part of the Bob's Big Boy chain, while retaining the original look and design of Johnie's. Due to the building's 1950s style, the restaurant has been featured in several movies and TV shows.

One Main Place (Dallas)

One Main Place is a mixed-use skyscraper hotel and office building at 1201 Main Street in Dallas, Texas. The building rises 445 feet. It contains 33 above-ground floors, and was completed in 1968. One Main Place currently stands as the 27th-tallest building in the city. The architectural firm who designed the building was Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, who also designed the Willis Tower and John Hancock Center in Chicago and the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. Gordon Bunshaft was the lead designer of One Main Place and a few of his notable buildings include Lever House in New York, the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015.

Los Cerritos Ranch House, also known as Rancho Los Cerritos or Casa de los Cerritos, in Long Beach, California, was "the largest and most impressive adobe residence erected in southern California during the Mexican period". Los Cerritos means "the little hills" in English. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1970.

Buffums

Buffums, originally written as Buffums' with an apostrophe, was a chain of upscale department stores, headquartered in Long Beach, California. The Buffums chain began in 1904, when two brothers from Illinois, Charles A. and Edwin E. Buffum, together with other partners, bought the Schilling Bros., the largest dry goods store in Long Beach, and renamed it The Mercantile Co. The store grew to a large downtown department store, and starting in the 1950s, grew slowly over the years to be a small regional chain of 16 speciality department stores across Southern California at the time of its closure in 1990.

Textile Center Building United States historic place

Textile Center Building is a 12-story Gothic Revival and Italian Renaissance Revival architectural styled brick building located in the Los Angeles Fashion District. Designed by William Douglas Lee in the Gothic Revival style, the building opened in 1926 as a center for garment manufacturing. It has since been converted to condominiums.

Cooper Arms Apartments United States historic place

Cooper Arms Apartments is a registered historic building located on Ocean Boulevard in downtown Long Beach, California. The twelve-story Renaissance Revival apartment tower was built in 1923. It was one of the first structures to be designated a Long Beach Historical Landmark when the city launched its historic preservation program in 1980, and it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. It is currently operated as condominiums.

The Lynwood Pacific Electric Railway Depot is a former railway station of the Pacific Electric Railway, located in Lynwood, California. Originally in service on the Santa Ana Line, the station building was moved after the construction of the Century Freeway and now resides in downtown Lynwood.
