Juja is a town in Kiambu County in Kenya. It is the home town of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). It is also a constituency in Kiambu county, currently represented in the parliament by Hon. George Koimburi [1] following the demise of the late Hon. Francis Munyua Waititu. [2] [3] The MCA (Member of County Assembly) is Kalpesh Jayantilal Shah, who represents the people of Juja Ward in the County Government. Juja is home to more than 150,000 Kenyans, who are mostly students.

There are several industries in Juja, including Pulp and Paper, which recycles brown paper. Star Plastics is another manufacturer which makes water drums and other plastic products. Safari Stationers manufactures stationery products and Hydro Aluminum makes aluminum profiles.

Juja is also home to The Juja City Mall, Juja Preparatory School, Kalimoni Primary School, Mang'u High School and parts of Thika Superhighway.

The town is located about 30 kilometers North of Nairobi between Thika and Ruiru towns. The Nairobi Business Park is found in the environs of this town. One should keep in mind that Juja is under the Nairobi Metropolitan Authority as envisaged in the Vision 2030 of Kenya.

It has a population of 156,041, according to the 2019 census. [4]

History of Juja Town

Private records from McMillan Memorial Library indicate that sometime in 1900 when Lord William Northrop Macmillan arrived in Nairobi, he was carrying two statues which he had bought in West Africa. He had been told that one was Ju and the other was Ja, and had been asked to preserve them, otherwise he would perish at sea.

McMillan then settled on the road to Thika where he bought some 19,000 acres, at a time when nobody was allowed to own more than 5,000 acres. Privately, he attributed it to the powers of Ju and Ja idols and as a result, he named the large expanse Ju-Ja Farm. [5]

Because of the numerous superstitions that surrounded Juja Farm, it became a no-go zone and locals used to fear entry into a land they always heard had been jinxed. As a result, McMillan's wife took the two idols from the house and buried them in Ndarugu valley, near Thika Town. As a result, the name Juja started entering into annals of colonial history in Kenya and refused to give way to its former name, ‘Weru wa Ndarugu’, the Ndarugu plains. Juja also serves as the Main Headquarters to a couple of organisations such as Straight Security, a private security company that provides guarded security all over Kenya, [6] Senate Hotel, a 3 star Hotel, Glowbal Digital; [7] A digital marketing company owned by The Medici Group, The Ksh. 1.7 Billion Juja City Mall [8] and Ruiru Juja Water and Sewerage Company (RUJWASCO), [9] a service company that provides piped water and sewerage services to Ruiru, Juja and its environs within Kiambu County. Kerugoya is the biggest town in Kirinyaga County, located 10 kilometres east of Karatina and 40 kilometres west of Embu. It is situated in the former Kirinyaga district. Travel directions by road from Nairobi, is through Thika road past Thika, Kenol and Makuyu. Kikuyu Constituency is an electoral constituency in Kenya. It is one of twelve constituencies in Kiambu County. The constituency was established for the 1963 elections. From 1988 elections to 2002 elections it was known as Kabete Constituency. With the new demarcation of constituencies by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), the constituency was split into two and now we have Kikuyu Constituency and Kabete Constituency. Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) is a public university that is situated in Juja, 36 kilometres northeast of Nairobi, along the Nairobi-Thika SuperHighway, off Exit 15. It offers courses in Technology, Engineering, Science, Commerce, Management and Building sciences. The university has a strong research interest in the areas of biotechnology and engineering. Notable alumni include Dr. Paul Chepkwony, the first governor of Kericho County in Kenya and a former lecturer, Emma Miloyo, a prominent Kenyan architect and the first female president of the Architectural Association of Kenya, as well as Aden Duale, the former Leader of Majority in the 11th Kenyan Parliament among others.

Kahawa is a mixed-use settlement spanning the Kiambu and Nairobi county borders along Thika Road. It is electorally divided into four wards across the two counties: Kahawa and Kahawa West wards in Nairobi county and Kahawa Wendani and Kahawa Sukari wards in Kiambu county. Despite its proximity to the city, half of it is administratively in Ruiru, while some parts, such as Kenyatta University, Kahawa Barracks, Kiwanja and Githurai 44, are administratively in Kasarani.

Ituru is a settlement in Kenya's Central Province. It is in Gatundu South constituency, Kiambu County. Proximate towns are Gatundu (south), Ruiru and Juja. Other villages neighbouring Ituru includes, Giathi, Gaithece, Gitundu, Itwiku, Muthurumbi, Giathi and Kagumoini.

William Kabogo Gitau is a Kenyan politician. He was the first and former governor of Kiambu County and a member of The National Alliance (TNA), one of the allied parties that merged to form The Jubilee Party.

Ferdinard Ndungu Waititu, also known as Baba Yao, is a Kenyan politician who served as the second governor of Kiambu County from 2016 to January 2020. He was impeached on corruption charges. His troubles started after it was learnt he was involved in a scheme of grabbing land from a widow worth over one million dollars amongst other fraudulent activities. He is currently awaiting trial for the mismanagement of county fund of over five million dollars. He also served as an assistant minister for Water Services and Irrigation in the government of Kenya.

Local elections were held in Kiambu County to elect a Governor and County Assembly on 4 March 2013. Under the new constitution, which was passed in a 2010 referendum, the 2013 general elections were the first in which Governors and members of the County Assemblies for the newly created counties were elected.

Nelson Muguku Njoroge was a Kenyan entrepreneur, investor and one of the country's wealthiest persons.

Mwiki is a low-income neighbourhood in the counties of Nairobi and Kiambu. It is approximately 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) northeast of the central business district of Nairobi. Due to its transregional nature, the part of Mwiki that is within Nairobi is referred as Kasarani Mwiki while the other portion domiciled in Kiambu is referred as Githurai Mwiki.
