Kavi Sukanta is a station on the Orange Line of the Kolkata Metro in Kalikapur, a southern neighbourhood of Kolkata, India, serving the areas of Kalikapur, Haltu, Prince Anwar Shah Road and Nandi Bagan. [1] [2] The station is named in honour of the revolutionary Bengali poet Sukanta Bhattacharya. [3]
This project was sanctioned in the budget of 2010–11 by Mamata Banerjee with a project deadline of six years. [4] The execution of this project was entrusted to RVNL at a cost of Rs 3951.98 crore. It will help to reduce travel time between the southern fringes of Kolkata to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport. [5] [4]
The 5 km (3.1 mi) stretch from New Garia to Ruby Hospital was expected to start from 2018. [6] Until then, the station and associated metro viaduct connections were fully completed with trail runs being conducted over this and other phase 1 stations. RVNL planned to launch the metro over this truncated route before this year's Durga Puja, but was postponed due to signalling issues. [5]
The Kavi Subhash–Hemanta Mukhopadhyay section of Orange Line was inaugurated on 7 March 2024. [7] [8] [9] [10] [11]
Kavi Sukanta Metro Station on the Orange Line of Kolkata Metro is structurally an elevated metro station. The station has three levels. Station entrances and exits begin or end at the first level or ground level. The second level or L1 or intermediate level houses station fare control, station agents, metro card vending machines, and crossovers. The third level or L2 or the final level houses the platforms and rail tracks. The station is 200 meters long and 25 meters wide. [12]

This station is close to multi-storey buildings and offices near Ruby Crossing so residents from Central and South Kolkata can comfortably reach via combined Blue Line and Orange Line route, then finally boarding off this station. The previous station of the station is Jyotirindra Nandi Metro Station at a distance of 1.6 km and the next station is Hemanta Mukhopadhyay Metro Station at a distance of 1.4 km away. [13] [14]
The station is being built with state-of-the-art technology. The station has four entrances and exits for entry and exit. A number of lifts, staircases and elevators are attached to the reach the concourse building. The second level of the station has ticket collection center, ticket validator for ticket examination. The station will have escalators for the convenience of passengers. The station will have drinking water and toilet facilities. [13]
Like the other stations and lines of the Kolkata Metro, this station will use 750 volts DC power supply by the third railway to operate the trains. [15]
Train movement will be conducted at this station and on the railway by communication-based train control signal system. This signal system can operate a 90 second interval train. Currently this automatic signalling system is not activated and only one metro track is operational. [15]
The Kolkata Metro is a rapid transit system serving the city of Kolkata and the Kolkata Metropolitan Region in West Bengal, India. Purple Line is a rapid transit metro line of the Kolkata Metro in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. A 6.5 kilometres (4.0 mi) stretch from Joka to Taratala of this line was inaugurated on 30 December 2022 and after extended to Majerhat on 6 March 2024. This line will span 16.67 kilometres (10.36 mi) from Joka in the south to Esplanade in the north. It has interchange with Blue Line at Park Street in central Kolkata and run parallel with Blue Line up to Esplanade where it has an interchange with Green Line. It is being built by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited.
Orange Line is a rapid transit metro line of the Kolkata Metro in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. It will connect New Garia with Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport via two major satellite towns of Kolkata metropolitan region, Salt Lake and New Town. It currently operates between Kavi Subhash and Hemanta Mukhopadhyay. This line will be one of the most important stretches of Kolkata Metro because it will connect the southern and the eastern parts of the city with Kolkata Airport. The total distance of this route will be 29.87 km (18.56 mi). It has an interchange with Blue Line at Kavi Subhash and will eventually connect with Green Line near IT Centre and Yellow Line at Jai Hind.
Satyajit Ray is a metro station of the Orange Line in Chak Garia, E.M. Bypass, Kolkata, India. The station is named in honour of the great Bengali filmmaker Satyajit Ray. The elevated structure is located above the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass with the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute and the Baghajatin Peerless Hospital on the eastern side and the Hiland Park condominium on the western side. This metro station would serve the neighbourhoods of Baghajatin, Chak Garia, Survey Park and Santoshpur of South Kolkata.
Howrah Maidan Metro Station is the terminal station of Kolkata Metro's Green Line in Howrah Maidan, Howrah, India. The underground station is located near the Howrah Municipal Corporation Stadium and the Howrah Sarat Sadan. The station was completed and inaugurated on 6th March 2024. Though being similar to any Blue Line underground station, it is made with world class amenities and patronage to football, the main sport of the state.

East–West Metro Tunnel is an underwater river tunnel of Kolkata Metro in Kolkata, West Bengal. The river tunnel is constructed underneath Hooghly River. It is the biggest underwater river tunnel of India, which is made for metro rail service. The East–West Metro Tunnel length is 10.8 km (6.7 mi) and width is 5.5 metres. A 520 m stretch of the tracks goes through a tunnel under the Hooghly River. The roof of the tunnel is about 30 metres from the ground level. The tunnel was completed in 2021. The tunnel is used by Green Line, also known as East–West Metro Line, for metro rail service by Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation and it was constructed by Afcons Infrastructure.
Majerhat metro station is an operational metro station on Purple Line of Kolkata Metro. It is the terminal station of the first phase 1 of this line and the first and only station built over an existing railway network, from Joka to Majerhat. The line was sanctioned in India's railway budget of 2010–11, but due to various hurdles, construction was delayed and missed multiple deadlines. The most notable reason for delays was the Majerhat Bridge collapse in 2018.
