The Koteka of West Papua are seven major ethnicities of the highlands of West Papua with a common culture: the Lani, Mee, Amungme, Moni, Damal, Yali, and Nduga. The Koteka share their identity with other peoples in southern West Papua, the Muyu, Mandobo, and Kamoro.

Lani people

The Lani are an indigenous people in Western New Guinea, usually labelled 'Western Dani' by foreign missionaries, or grouped—inaccurately—with the Dani people who inhabit the Baliem Valley to the east.

The Mee are a people in the Wissel Lakes area of Papua province, West Papua, Indonesia. They speak the Ekagi language.

The Amung people are a group of about 17,700 people living in the highlands of the Papua province of Indonesia. Their language is called Damal.

Manokwari is the capital, while Sorong is the largest city and the main gateway to the province. According to the 2010 census by Statistics Indonesia, West Papua recorded a population of 760,422. Inaugurated as a province in 2003, West Papua was initially named West Irian Jaya until 2007. The name West Papua itself is also used by the Free Papua Movement to refer the whole Western New Guinea. Consisting of twelve regencies and one city, the province enjoys a special autonomous status as granted by the Indonesian legislation. West Papua is well known by its Raja Ampat Islands which contains the richest marine biodiversity in the world.

The Republic of West Papua is a proposed, former, and unrecognized state consisting of the Western New Guinea region. The region is claimed by Indonesia and has been occupied by Indonesia since 1 May 1963 under several names in the following order West Irian, Irian Jaya and Papua. Today the region comprises two Indonesian provinces: Papua and West Papua.

Western New Guinea, also known as Papua, is the Indonesian part of the island of New Guinea. Since the island is also named as Papua, the region is sometimes called West Papua. Lying to the west of the independent state of Papua New Guinea, it is the only Indonesian territory to be situated in Oceania. Manokwari is a non-autonomous town in Indonesia and the capital of the province of West Papua, at the western end of New Guinea. The town has many resorts and is a major tourist area. It is one of the seats of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Manokwari–Sorong. It is also the administrative seat of Manokwari Regency. The town is also included of the Manokwari-Northeastern Bird's Head Peninsula MSA. It is also a major port, financial center, and tourist area that is important to West Papua and Eastern Indonesia.

Koteka fashion accessory

The koteka, horim, or penis gourd is a penis sheath traditionally worn by native male inhabitants of some ethnic groups in New Guinea to cover their genitals. They are normally made from a dried-out gourd, Lagenaria siceraria, although other species, such as Nepenthes mirabilis, are also used. They are held in place by a small loop of fiber attached to the base of the koteka and placed around the scrotum. There is a secondary loop placed around the chest or abdomen and attached to the main body of the koteka. Men choose kotekas similar to ones worn by other men in their cultural group. For example, Yali men favour a long, thin koteka, which helps hold up the multiple rattan hoops worn around their waist. Men from Tiom wear a double gourd, held up with a strip of cloth, and use the space between the two gourds for carrying small items such as money and tobacco.

The West Papuan languages are a proposed language family of about two dozen Papuan languages of the Bird's Head Peninsula of far western New Guinea, the island of Halmahera and its vicinity, spoken by about 220,000 people in all.

The Cook Islands is a third tier rugby union playing nation. They began playing international rugby in the early 1971. Thus far, the Cook Islands have not made an appearance at any of the World Cups.

Yali people ethnic group

Yali are major tribal group in Papua, Indonesia, and live to the east of the Baliem Valley in the Papuan highlands. The Dani word for "lands of the east" is "yali", from where the Yali took it, without it being a self-identification for their tribe.

The Koteka Tribal Assembly is a cultural organisation of the Koteka tribes of Papua. It was established in January 2000 as an outcome of discussions among the elders of several tribes in the highlands of West Papua. The main goal of the assembly is to peacefully, democratically and legally work towards the recognition and protection of customary laws, values and beliefs of the Koteka peoples. Many activist from the organization that were involved in peaceful protests have been tortured and forced into exile.

Ochyrotica koteka is a moth of the family Pterophoridae. It is found in Papua New Guinea.

Tohoa Tauroa "Paul" Koteka is a former New Zealand rugby union player. A prop, Koteka represented Waikato at a provincial level, and was a member of the New Zealand national side, the All Blacks, in 1981 and 1982. He played six matches for the All Blacks including two internationals. After moving to Perth, he represented Western Australia, and became captain of the team.

Kane Koteka is an Australian rugby union player who currently plays for the Western Force in the international Super Rugby competition and the Perth Spirit in the National Rugby Championship. His regular playing position is as a loose forward.
