Lawrence East was a rapid transit station on Line 3 Scarborough of the Toronto subway until the line's closure on July 24, 2023. It was the third-busiest station on Line 3, after Kennedy and Scarborough Centre.
Lawrence East opened in 1985, along with the rest of Line 3. All bus routes that operated along Lawrence Avenue East at the time were rerouted to serve the station on March 23, 1985, one day after the opening. [2]
The station was renovated between 2011 and 2012 to include automated sliding doors, allowing the southbound platform and the bus platform to be accessible.
In February 2021, the TTC recommended the closure of Line 3 in 2023 and its replacement by bus service until the completion of the Scarborough extension of Line 2 Bloor–Danforth. [3] However, the rail portion of this station permanently closed following a derailment on July 24, 2023. [4] A new Lawrence East station is planned to be built along the planned Line 2 extension on the southwest corner of Lawrence Avenue East and McCowan Road and is scheduled to open circa 2030. [5] [6]
The small station was built on two levels. The Line 3 platforms, bus platforms, and only entrance were located on ground level. The entrance was an automatic sliding door facing north with a sidewalk connecting to Lawrence Avenue East to the west side, and an underpass underneath both the Line 3 and GO rails towards the commuter parking lot, Access Road, and Prudential Drive. Below ground level in the interior of the station was an underpass connecting the entrance to the northbound platforms through the means of stairs and escalators. [7]
This station was a "partially accessible" station, as all services within the station, except for the northbound platform, were accessible. The TTC suggested that people in need of accessible service onto the northbound platform take Line 3 southbound to Kennedy station and double back to Lawrence East. An accessible fare gate was also available inside the station at the main fare booth. [7]
The station had a bus terminal located underneath the elevated portion of Lawrence Avenue East, in the Midland Avenue and Kennedy Road corridor. At the time of its closure, five TTC bus routes (three daytime routes and two Blue Night routes) served or passed near the station, including routes running along Kennedy Road. [7] After the Line 3 closure, the 954 Lawrence East Express bus continued to turn back at Lawrence East station until October 9, 2023, when it was rerouted to terminate at Kennedy station. [8]
A commuter parking lot for up to 90 vehicles is located just east of the station, also underneath the elevated section of Lawrence Avenue East. [7] Parking is managed by the Toronto Parking Authority.
Line 3 continued to travel on ground level, straight north after Lawrence East station, running parallel to the nearby railway tracks. South of the station, the line continued to travel on ground level but became elevated shortly before reaching Kennedy station, where it made a 90-degree turn.
The TTC plans to replace the Line 3 right-of-way with a busway between Kennedy and Ellesmere stations. According to a 2022 TTC report, the adjacent station's bus facilities would be retained along with a pedestrian underpass for the local community to use. Buses would serve customers at new stops on the south side of the former station. [9] : 23
The provincial transit agency Metrolinx is building a new subway station on Lawrence Avenue East, approximately 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) east of the former Line 3 station. The underground station will be parallel to McCowan Road along a planned extension of Line 2 Bloor–Danforth. It will be on a north–south alignment to the west of the Scarborough General Hospital and the new bus terminal will be located on McCowan Road west of Lawrence Avenue East. The new station and bus terminal are expected to open in 2030. [10] [5]
Line 3 Scarborough, originally known as Scarborough RT (SRT), is a defunct medium-capacity rapid transit line that was part of the Toronto subway system in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The line ran entirely within the eastern district of Scarborough, encompassing six stations and 6.4 kilometres (4.0 mi) of mostly elevated track. It connected with Line 2 Bloor–Danforth at its southwestern terminus, Kennedy, and terminated in the northeast at McCowan. Until its closure in July 2023, the system had a ridership of 3,908,000 per year.
Line 4 Sheppard is the newest and shortest rapid transit line of the Toronto subway system, operated by the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC). It opened on November 22, 2002, and has five stations along 5.5 kilometres (3.4 mi) of track, which is built without any open sections in the district of North York along Sheppard Avenue East between Yonge Street and Don Mills Road. All stations are wheelchair accessible and are decorated with unique public art.

Kennedy is the eastern terminal station on Line 2 Bloor–Danforth of the Toronto subway system. Opened in 1980, it is located east of the Kennedy Road and Eglinton Avenue intersection. With the adjacent Kennedy GO station on the Stouffville line of GO Transit, Kennedy is an intermodal transit hub and the fifth busiest station in the system, after Bloor–Yonge, St. George, Sheppard–Yonge, and Union, serving a total of approximately 50,503 customer trips a day.

It was also a rapid transit station serving Line 3 Scarborough of the Toronto subway system until Line 3's closure on July 24, 2023. It is located north of Ellesmere Road between Brimley and McCowan Roads, just south of Highway 401. It was adjacent to the former Scarborough Centre Bus Terminal, which was a station for GO Transit buses and other intercity coach services until the TTC modified the facility for TTC buses.
McCowan was a terminal station on Line 3 Scarborough of the Toronto subway. The closed station is located at 1275 McCowan Road, just north of Ellesmere Road at Bushby Drive/Town Centre Court.
Kipling is the western terminus station of Line 2 Bloor–Danforth of the Toronto subway system. The station is served by buses and subway trains operated by the Toronto Transit Commission and is adjacent to the Kipling GO Station on the Milton line of GO Transit and the Kipling Bus Terminal, where passengers can connect with MiWay and GO Transit bus services. It opened on November 21, 1980, as part of the extensions west, to this station, and east to Kennedy station. It is located in the Islington–City Centre West neighbourhood on St. Albans Road at Aukland Road, west of the overpass of Kipling Avenue, after which the station is named. The 900 Airport Express bus route connects Kipling to the Toronto Pearson International Airport.
Main Street is a station on Line 2 Bloor–Danforth in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and is located on the east side of Main Street a short distance north of Danforth Avenue. Connections to GO Transit's commuter train service on the Lakeshore East line can be made at Danforth GO Station, approximately 300 metres to the south on the east side of Main Street. Transit City was a plan for developing public transport in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It was first proposed and announced on 16 March 2007 by Toronto mayor David Miller and Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) chair Adam Giambrone. The plan called for the construction of seven new light rail lines along the streets of seven priority transit corridors, which would have eventually been integrated with existing rapid transit, streetcar, and bus routes. Other transit improvements outlined in the plan included upgrading and extending the Scarborough RT line, implementing new bus rapid transit lines, and improving frequency and timing of 21 key bus routes. The plan integrated public transportation objectives outlined in the City of Toronto Official Plan, the TTC Ridership Growth Strategy and Miller's 2006 election platform.
The Sheppard East LRT was a proposed light rail line in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It was first announced as part of the Transit City proposal in 2007. The Sheppard East LRT as proposed was to be 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) long, travel along Sheppard Avenue from Don Mills subway station to east of Morningside Avenue, and be operated by the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC).
The Eglinton East LRT (EELRT), also known as Line 7 Eglinton East and formerly known as the Scarborough Malvern LRT, is a proposed light rail line in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The line would be entirely within the district of Scarborough. It was originally part of Transit City, a 2007 plan to develop new light rail lines along several priority transit corridors in the city.
Scarborough Centre Bus Terminal is a regional and intercity bus terminal in Scarborough City Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, located near its namesake rapid transit station on Line 3 Scarborough of the Toronto subway. It is served by GO Transit buses. The terminal is near the Scarborough Town Centre shopping mall and the Scarborough Civic Centre. Until 2022, Megabus, and other private coach services used the terminal, but have moved to temporary on-street locations nearby due to subway construction.
SmartTrack is a municipal proposal to enhance GO Transit rail service within Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It takes advantage of the province's existing GO Transit Regional Express Rail plans. SmartTrack has evolved since it was originally proposed by Toronto mayor John Tory as the centrepiece of his 2014 mayoral election campaign.
