The following is a list of United States counties in which a majority (over 50%) of the population is Native American (American Indian or Alaska Native), according to data from the 2020 Census. [1] There are 29 counties in 8 states with Native American majority populations. County-equivalents, such as boroughs and census areas in Alaska, are included in this list.

Contents

This list does not include Pacific Islanders / Native Hawaiians; in any case, there are no counties with majorities. The highest percentage of Pacific Islanders in any U.S. county is Kalawao County, Hawaii, with 48%, although it only has 82 inhabitants. [2] [3]

Grayling is a city in Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area, Alaska, United States. At the 2010 census the population was 194, unchanged from 2000. Since 1977, the Athabaskan village has seen a surge of interest on odd-numbered years, when it is the site of a checkpoint during the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. It is situated after the checkpoint at Anvik and before Eagle Island.

In 45 of the 50 states of the United States, the county is used for the level of local government immediately below the state itself. Louisiana uses parishes, and Alaska uses boroughs. In Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island, some or all counties within states have no governments of their own; the counties continue to exist as legal entities, however, and are used by states for some administrative functions and by the United States Census bureau for statistical analysis. There are 3,242 counties and county equivalent administrative units in total, including the District of Columbia and 100 county-equivalents in the U.S. territories.

Pacific Islander Americans are Americans who are of Pacific Islander ancestry. For its purposes, the United States census also counts Aboriginal Australians as part of this group.
