Latin America [lower-alpha 1] is represented under the Global Geoparks Network by the geoparks of the Latin American Geoparks Network (Red GEOLAC). As of 2024, it includes 12 UNESCO Global Geoparks and further projects are in progress seeking UNESCO status or that of national geopark in South America, Central America and the Caribbean. [1]

Caçapava do Sul | Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil | 3047 | 2023 | The volcano-sedimentary deposits of the "Camaqu basin," which date from the Ediacaran to the Cambrian and give a full and well-exposed record of the South American Platform's transition stage between 600 and 500 Ma, are what define the geology of the Caçapava UNESCO Global Geopark. Numerous surveys have identified several geosites in the geopark, including Serra do Segredo, Guaritas, and Minas do Camaqu, as having international significance. Named after the Tupi term Y-berab, meaning "clear water", the geopark alludes to the aquifer sustaining the Uberaba region. Branded as "Land of the Giants", it boasts a rich paleontological legacy, including over ten thousand fossils, such as the Uberabatitan ribeiroi, Brazil's largest dinosaur. The region's progress is marked by the introduction of the Zebu cattle breed in the late 19th century, catalyzing the development of the Brazilian livestock market and setting global benchmarks for sustainable breeding practices. The area encompasses 400 million years of geological records, but the main catalyst of the formation of the landscape is the Nazca Plate's subduction under the South American Plate, resulting volcanic activity, earthquakes and several landslides in the rugged surface. The Hualca-Ampato-Sabancaya volcanic complex presents 25 volcanic cones, some of them with recent activity, such as El Misti and the Andagua volcanic field. Ice coverage is still observable in the higher regions of the stratovolcanoes, and the glacial lakes like Galletue or Icalma are testimony to the more extended coverage, reaching its maximum 20,000 years ago. Rio Coco | Madriz Department Nicaragua 17°31′05″N97°20′32″W / 17.518056°N 97.342222°W | 954 | 2020 | Nestled in Nicaragua, Río Coco Geopark boasts diverse geology and wildlife. Discovered by Czech geologists in 2004, it's now a top tourist spot. Somoto Canyon, carved by the river, is a highlight. The park's varied terrain includes canyons, mountains, and rivers flowing to the Caribbean and Pacific. Visitors enjoy rafting, kayaking, and cultural experiences. Must-see attractions include ancient petroglyphs and El Castillo ceremonial site. [20] [21] |
According to the register of GeoLAC, the following geopark projects are in an aspiring phase (documentation close to submission to UNESCO or already submitted), or under planning, in a hatching phase. [22]
Geoparks incitatives in Latin America have been the subject of geoscience conferences since 2001 and the first member, Araripe, Brazil was admitted to the Global Geoparks Network in 2005. [31] The 1st Latin American and the Caribbean Conference of Geoparks in 2010 issued the "Declaration of Araripe", stating that
“the conservation, valorisation and education of the Geological Heritage – the memory of the Earth–, the Natural Heritage and Cultural Heritage, tangible and intangible, are subject to sustainable development and correspond to the need and concerns of the people in the continental region of Latin America and the Caribbean" and "It shall allow the development of instruments for regional and global cooperation through exchange of experiences and management practices among Geoparks ..."
The "1st Symposium of Geoparks" in Arequipa, Peru issued the "Declaration of Arequipa", confirming the reaffirming the Declaration of Araripe and
"advancing with the operational guidelines of the Latin American and Caribbean UNESCO Global Geoparks... with the UNESCO Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean ... assuming the (transitory) responsibility of moving forward with the creation of the rules of operation and other communication objectives in conjunction with the signatory partners." [32]
The official declaration of the foundation of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network for Latin America and the Caribbean (GeoLAC) was issued in 2017 May, during the "4th Latin American and Caribbean Symposium on Geoparks", by four founding members (Araripe, Grutas del Palacio, Comarca Minera and Mixteca Alta UNESCO Global Geoparks). The network was enlarged with 3 new members in 2019 (Colca y Volcanes de Andagua, Imbabura, Kütralküra) and aspiring and planned geoparks are also related to the regional geopark network.

A transboundary protected area (TBPA) is an ecological protected area that spans boundaries of more than one country or sub-national entity. Such areas are also known as transfrontier conservation areas (TFCAs) or peace parks.
A geopark is a protected area with internationally significant geology within which sustainable development is sought and which includes tourism, conservation, education and research concerning not just geology but other relevant sciences.
Uberaba is a city in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. It is located in the Brazilian Highlands at an elevation of 823 metres above sea level on the Uberaba River, and is situated 418 kilometres from the state capital, Belo Horizonte. The city was granted its status in 1856 and derives its name from the Tupi language, meaning 'bright water'. As of 2021, the population was 340,277 inhabitants.
Conguillío National Park is in the Andes, in the provinces of Cautín and Malleco, in the Araucanía Region of Chile also known as Region IX. Its name derives from the Mapuche word for "water with Araucaria seeds".
Geotourism is tourism associated with geological attractions and destinations. Geotourism deals with the abiotic natural and built environments. Geotourism was first defined in England by Thomas Alfred Hose in 1995.
The European Geoparks Network (EGN) functions as the regional organization of the Global Geoparks Network (GGN) and the UNESCO International Geosciences and Geoparks Programme (UNESCO-IGGP). Its main objective is to ensure cooperation between geoparks for the protection of geological heritage and the promotion of sustainable development of their territories in Europe. In 2020 January, the EGN had 75 institutional members from 26 European countries and there are several aspiring geopark projects, applying for a UNESCO label and therefore the permanent EGN membership.
Psiloritis Natural or Nature Park is a UNESCO Global geopark located in the central part of the island of Crete, in southern Greece.
UNESCO Global Geoparks (UGGp) are geoparks certified by the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council as meeting all the requirements for belonging to the Global Geoparks Network (GGN). The GGN is both a network of geoparks and the agency of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). that administers the network.
eLAC in international relations, is an intergovernmental strategy that conceives of information and communications technologies (ICTs) as instruments for economic development and social inclusion in Latin America and the Caribbean. It is based on a public-private sector partnership and is part of a long-term vision in line with the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), those of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), and now, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It contributes to the implementation of these long-term goals by pursuing a consecutive series of frequently adjusted short-term action plans with concrete qualitative and quantitative goals to be achieved.
The Azores Geopark is a network of 121 geographically-dispersed sites of geographic heritage and marine areas that covers the nine volcanic islands of the archipelago of the Azores. This network is managed by the Azores Geopark Association, a non-profit association, with its headquarters in Horta on the island of Faial, established 19 May 2010. It is part of the European Geoparks Network and the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network. The Association's mission is to ensure the geological conservation, environmental education and sustainable development, while promoting the well-being of the population and a respect for the environment.
The Asia Pacific Geoparks Network (APGN) is the regional geopark network of the Global Geoparks Network (GGN) and the UNESCO International Geosciences and Geoparks Programme (UNESCO-IGGP). Its main role is to coordinate the activities of GGN in the UNESCO regions of Asia and the Pacific, to promote networking between global geoparks and geopark professionals in the region and to provide support for sustainable economic development in geopark areas. As of 2020 February, the APGN had 60 institutional members in countries. The Pacific region is currently not represented by a global geopark, but there are ongoing geopark projects, just as in other countries of Asia.
Kütralkura is a geopark in southern Chile's Araucanía Region. The geopark has an area of 8100 km2 and lies mostly in the Andes. It spans four communes: Curacautín, Lonquimay, Melipeuco and Vilcún. All of Conguillio National Park and Llaima, one of Chile's most active volcanoes, lie within the geopark.
The Comarca Minera Geopark is located in the center-south of the Mexican state of Hidalgo. It extends over nine municipalities: Atotonilco el Grande, Epazoyucan, Huasca de Ocampo, Mineral del Chico, Mineral de la Reforma, Mineral del Monte, Omitlán de Juárez, Pachuca de Soto and Singuilucan. These municipalities are articulated by a network of 31 geosites, elected because they express the geological history of the territory and highlight the relationship between mining and metallurgy, and the historical spaces and cultural development of the region. In addition, they are important for science and education and, mostly, have a significant landscape value.
Araripe Geopark is a geological park, located in Ceará, Brazil. It is the first geological park in Brazil, recognized by UNESCO.
