Fatalities from wingsuit flying have occurred almost from the inception of the sport.



Listed below are notable examples where wingsuit pilots were publicly named in the press, including when wingsuit practice was not the first cause of death.

[6] [7] This was not a BASE accident as he had jumped from an airplane; it was technically an illegal jump since he used BASE equipment containing only one parachute (i.e., no reserve parachute).[ disputed discuss ] The pilots were eventually reprimanded for allowing the jump.
22 October 2004 Roland "Slim" Simpson 35ChinaWell known Australian BASE jumper. On 6 October 2004, Roland Simpson leapt from the Jin Mao Tower, the tallest skyscraper in China at the time, in a wingsuit. After a good jump and flight, his parachute opened with multiple line twists making it difficult to steer and he crashed onto an adjacent building. He went into a coma, and died several days later in Canberra Hospital. [8]
9 May 2007Jimmy Hall41CanadaAmerican adventurer and TV personality died on an expedition to Baffin Island in northern Canada. After several days of successful jumps, Hall attempted a wingsuit flight through a canyon. He failed to clear a ledge, and struck the cliff. [9]
26 March 2009 Shane McConkey 39ItalyPictured in a wingsuit at the 2008 BASE Race. Professional skier and BASE jumper. McConkey was performing a complicated ski-BASE jump in Italy. He experienced problems when he attempted to release his skis, and as a result failed to deploy his parachute in time. [10]
28 August 2009 Eli Thompson 36SwitzerlandDied while performing a wingsuit proximity-flying jump from a helicopter in the Swiss Alps. He accidentally hit the side of the mountain. [11]
12 April 2010Geoffrey Robson30South AfricaDied during a wingsuit BASE jump and proximity flight from a cliff on Duiwelskloof near Stellenbosch, South Africa. [12] Originally from South Africa, Robson was a PhD candidate at ETH Zurich working on the mathematical modelling of the aerodynamic characteristics of wingsuits. He was described by a former professor as "very careful [, taking] the sport seriously". [13] [14]
16 September 2011Valentina Rotar37SwitzerlandFrom Slovenia, died while jumping from High Nose in Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland. After opening her parachute, she hit the cliff wall and was killed on impact. [15] [16] At the time, she was one of two women BASE jumpers in Slovenia [17]
21 October 2011 Antoine Montant 30FranceMulti-extreme sport athlete died after experiencing a wingsuit accident near Collet d’Anterne in Haute Savoie, French Alps. [18] When his body was found, his parachute was undeployed. [19] [20] At the time of the accident, Montant was jumping alone. [21]
23 June 2012Hervé Le Gallou51FranceVeteran BASE jumper, died wingsuiting on Grande Tête de l'Obiou in the French Alps when he was killed on impact, due to possible equipment failure. [22] Along with Dave McDonnell, Le Gallou was known for being one of the first persons to jump from the Burj Khalifa and had jumped from the Eiffel Tower over 40 times. [23] [24]
7 July 2012Alan McCandlish31SwitzerlandNew Zealander, was jumping with friends when he struck the cliff face and fell near Berner Oberland, southwest of Zürich. [25] McCandlish hit a ledge, plunged over a cliff and fell to another ledge to his death. Australian BASE jumper Chris "Douggs" McDougall, who witnessed the accident noted how McCandlish was wearing a new suit for the jump and may have misjudged his ability to turn. [26] McDougall wrote that the accident was a result of "100% human error". [27] McCandlish was part of the team that pioneered the Kaipo Wall in Fiordland National Park in 2008. They were first to claim the biggest vertical cliff in New Zealand. [28]

9 September 2012Wioletta Roslan37SwitzerlandSwedish-Polish adventurer, died on a wingsuit jump from the Flower Box at Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland when her parachute failed to open. [31] Wioletta began skydiving at age 19 and had jumped from this location many times before. [32] Four months pregnant at the time of her death, Wioletta was making one last jump before her pregnancy advanced further. [33]
8 December 2012Peter Farley33AustraliaAustralian, was killed in a wingsuit jump after colliding with another skydiver during a formation dive above Wilton, south-west Sydney, Australia. Farley was said to be struggling with his wingsuit during the jump. [34] An investigation found half of the 17 flyers participating in the jump lacked the prescribed Australian Parachute Federation ''star crest'' qualification to perform jumps with more than 10 people. The organization suspended several instructors who were involved in the mass skydive after the accident. [35] [36] Farley's death is recognized as the first wingsuit death in Australia. [37]
3 January 2013 Kurt Ruppert 29United StatesExperienced skydiver and wingsuit flyer was last seen when he jumped from a helicopter over Mount Si in Washington state. [38] He never reached the landing zone. [39] Due to his wingsuit, the original search area covered 9 square miles. [40] Search teams called off the search days later saying it was unlikely he had survived. [41] [42] He has never been found. [43]
14 August 2013 Mark Sutton 42SwitzerlandBritish stuntman who had parachuted into the 2012 Summer Olympics opening ceremony as a James Bond character, was killed when he hit a ridge while wingsuit BASE-jumping near Martigny, Switzerland. [44]
18 August 2013Mario Richard47ItalyCanadian-American wingsuit flyer, died during a wingsuit BASE jump from Sass Pordoi in Italy’s Dolomites. [45] [46] In 2011, he was the first to jump from Tofana di Rozes alongside his wife, Steph Davis. [47] In 2012, Richard estimated he had completed 7,000 sky dives and 2,000 BASE jumps without injury. [48]
23 August 2013 Álvaro Bultó 51SwitzerlandSpanish TV presenter, extreme sports enthusiast and wingsuit flier, died after a wingsuit BASE-jump in Switzerland. [49] [50] He was the son of Francisco Bultó, the founder of the Bultaco and Montesa motorbike companies. [51]
9 October 2013Victor Kovats40ChinaHungarian wingsuit flyer, plunged to his death in a trial run before the Red Bull World Wingsuit League world championships in Tianmen Mountain. [52] [53] His parachute failed to open due to equipment failure or adverse wind conditions. [54] [55] Kovats was a three-time Hungarian national wingsuit champion and had successfully completed over 700 jumps before his death. [56]
14 January 2014David Strather41United StatesCanadian doctor, was killed during a wingsuit proximity flight near the Grand Canyon. [57] [58] He died on impact 15-20 seconds after jumping, possibly from equipment failure. [59] [60]
8 February 2014Amber Bellows28United StatesAmerican BASE jumper and parachutist, died wearing a wingsuit when her parachute failed to open after jumping from Mount Kinesava at Utah's Zion National Park. [61] [62] BASE jumping is not permitted at Zion National Park. Amber's death was the first BASE jumping fatality reported at Zion in the park's history. [63]
13 March 2014Sean "Stanley" Leary38United StatesProlific climber, adventurer, and BASE jumper, was killed in a BASE jumping accident near Zion National Park, Utah. [64] [65] Leary climbed Yosemite's El Capitan more than 50 times and had set numerous climbing records on that mountain, including setting speed records for climbing the Salathé Wall, with Alex Honnold; and The Nose. [66] [67] Leary's death was the second BASE jumping fatality at Zion. His body was found about 300 feet from the top of West Temple peak and was retrieved by his friend and climbing partner Dean Potter, who would later be killed in a wingsuit accident in 2015. 29 March 2014Dan Vicary33SwitzerlandThe three experienced wingsuit flyers jumped from a helicopter over the Lütschental area near Interlaken, Switzerland. They had planned to land in the valley, but took a wrong turn, flew over the wrong ridge, and crashed into an alpine pasture. 25 May 2014Jeff Nebelkopf43United StatesAmerican wingsuit designer and professional stuntman, died in Sebastian, Florida after experiencing trouble with his equipment during a wingsuit jump. [73] He was known for his development work on wingsuits and for instructing others in the sport. [74] [75]
6 June 2014 Darío Barrio 42SpainFamous Spanish TV chef, owner of the Madrid restaurant Dassa Bassa and an experienced wingsuit flier, died in an accident while participating in the International Air Festival at Segura de la Sierra in Jaén, a province in southern Spain. Darío was supposed to fly over an old castle but opened his parachute too late, crashing into the cliff where the castle is located. [76] During the event, the wingsuit flyers participated in a tribute to Alvaro Bultó, a wingsuit flyer who died in an accident a year earlier. [77]

17 August 2016Uli Emanuele29SwitzerlandItalian BASE jumper, died in a crash at Lauterbrunnen in Switzerland while shooting a new video. He was famous for his flights through a ring of fire and a "needle's eye" formed by a rock. 21 August 2016Alexander Polli31FranceItalo-Norwegian BASE jumper, died after crashing into a tree at an elevation of 1,500 m near Chamonix. [110]
26 August 2016Armin Schmieder28SwitzerlandItalian BASE jumper, died after jumping from Kandersteg, in the Swiss Alps. [111] Schmieder live-streamed his fatal flight on Facebook. [112]
3 October 2016Ratmir Nigimyanov30FranceRussian BASE jumper, died after jumping from Aiguille du Midi above Chamonix, France. His parachute failed to open. Witnesses saw him careening off a rocky outcrop just above the town, before crashing into a building site behind the train station. 18 November 2016Mehdi Habibi38SwitzerlandIranian BASE jumper, died after jumping with a wingsuit from the "High Ultimate" in the Lauterbrunnen, Mürren area of the Swiss Alps. He was found dead in rough terrain by a team of Air Glaciers in the afternoon of the same day according to the local police report. His body was subsequently recovered by the rescue team. The incident is believed to have occurred around 9 AM on Friday 18 November. [116] [117] Before his fatal accident, Habibi completed 4500 skydives,1000 of those by wingsuit. Of his 800 base jumps, 270 were by wingsuit. [118]
25 January 2017Graham Dickinson28ChinaCanadian wingsuit flier, died after attempting a flythrough of "Heaven's Gate" a 130 meter tall natural cave formation in south China. [119] His body was found on a cliff at the Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park in Zhangjiajie of Hunan Province. [120] [121] Dickinson was known for BASE jumping from the Whistler PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola in February 2014, [122] after which he had to flee the country once the stunt went viral. [123]
24 May 2017Matthew Ciancio42United StatesAmerican wingsuit skydiver, died after jumping from 13,000 feet in California as part of a wingsuit formation with "four or five" other people. Ciancio reportedly failed to follow correct emergency procedure to release his main parachute after it did not deploy correctly. Witnesses said he waited too long to release his main parachute and switch to his backup parachute. [124] [125]
28 June 2017Micah Couch33NorwaySkydiving instructor, American resident of Dubai, wingsuit flyer, and Red Bull Aces wingsuit competitor, died during a wingsuit BASE jump in Aurland, Norway. Witnesses reported that his parachute failed to open, causing him to crash into the base of the mountain. [126]
6 July 2017David Bugnion30FranceSwiss national, died after his parachute failed to open during a wingsuit flight in Haute Savoie in France. [127]
11 November 2017 Valery Rozov 52NepalRussian climb jumper, died while jumping with a wingsuit from a height of 6,812 meters (22,349 ft) off Ama Dablam mountain in Nepal. According to members of his group, Rozov crashed into the side of the mountain. [128]
22 January 2018Aime-Jean St. Hilaire-Adam27United StatesCompetitive skydiver from Calgary, participating in the World Open Wingsuit Championships, was killed after he collided with another jumper, lost consciousness, failed to open his parachute, and crashed onto a roof in Perris, California. [129]
31 May 2018Óscar Cacho49SpainCivil guardsman died after a crash from a wingsuit BASE jump in Punta Calva, near Plan, Aragon, Spain. [130] He was one of the first to jump from this area [131]
15 June 2018Reginald "Veggie Reggie" Hurlbut68United StatesRecord-holding wingsuit flyer, Reginald Hurlbut died in Illinois while practicing for a world record attempt formation wingsuit jump. 27 July 2018Nicolas Galy40FranceWas killed 20 seconds into his jump over Bouloc-en-Quercy in France when he was struck by the plane he jumped from. [142] [143] The plane's pilot was later charged and found guilty of involuntary manslaughter. [144]

12 May 2020An Liu (刘安)24ChinaChinese female university student, disappeared in Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park, Hunan Province after jumping from a helicopter at a height of 2,500 m. Her body was found on 18 May 2020. She was an experienced wingsuit skydiver with more than 500 flights. [148]

7 January 2022James "Jimmy" Richard Pouchert55United StatesDied in a wingsuit flight from a cliff overlooking Professor Valley in Moab, Utah. [153] The professional BASE jumping instructor had completed thousands of jumps during 20 years of skydiving experience and 14 years of BASE jumping experience. [154] Several years before his death, he narrowly avoided a serious accident while wingsuiting when he accidentally jumped without a pilot chute. [155]
2 June 2022Matthew Glen Munting35ItalyDied instantly after impacting with the ground from Mount Cimone. The Australian previously had over 400 successful wingsuit jumps. [156]

10 June 2023Dominik Ertl42SwitzerlandExperienced wingsuit flyer, died in a crash landing in Walenstadt Sputnik, Switzerland. [177] He had "nearly 2,000 jumps under his belt over the past 10 years". [178] The Austrian lost speed after performing a corkscrew maneuver, and initiated a flare that caused further deceleration, as opposed to gaining altitude. After two failed attempts to pull his parachute cord, he was successful on the third attempt. However, it was too late and he "[impacted] in a horizontal body position." [177] Ertl documented his wingsuit flights on camera, which he posted on his YouTube channel. [178]
6 September 2023Francis Jay Driscoll38ItalyAustralian wingsuiter and BASE jumper died when he crash landed 200 meters below a BASE jump launch point in the Tofane mountain range, near Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy. [179]

BASE jumping is the recreational sport of jumping from fixed objects, using a parachute to descend to the ground. BASE is an acronym that stands for four categories of fixed objects from which one can jump: buildings, antennas, spans (bridges) and earth (cliffs). Wingsuit flying is the sport of skydiving using a webbing-sleeved jumpsuit called a wingsuit to add webbed area to the diver's body and generate increased lift, which allows extended air time by gliding flight rather than just free falling. The modern wingsuit, first developed in the late 1990s, uses a pair of fabric membranes stretched flat between the arms and flanks/thighs to imitate an airfoil, and often also between the legs to function as a tail and allow some aerial steering.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Felix Baumgartner</span> Austrian skydiver, daredevil and BASE jumper (born 1969)

Felix Baumgartner is an Austrian skydiver, daredevil and BASE jumper. He is widely known for jumping to Earth from a helium balloon from the stratosphere on 14 October 2012 and landing in New Mexico, United States, as part of the Red Bull Stratos project. Doing so, he set world records for skydiving an estimated 39 km (24 mi), reaching an estimated top speed of 1,357.64 km/h (843.6 mph), or Mach 1.25. He became the first person to break the sound barrier relative to the surface without vehicular power on his descent. He broke skydiving records for exit altitude, vertical freefall distance without a drogue parachute, and vertical speed without a drogue. Though he still holds the two latter records, the first was broken two years later, when on 24 October 2014, Alan Eustace jumped from 135,890 feet with a drogue.

Jeb Corliss is an American professional skydiver and BASE jumper. He has jumped from sites including Paris's Eiffel Tower, Seattle's Space Needle, the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro and the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur. He lives in Venice, California.

Skydive Hibaldstow is a parachuting and skydiving drop zone centre in Hibaldstow, North Lincolnshire, England. Skydive Hibaldstow is affiliated with the skydiving company British Skydiving.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Dean Potter</span> American climber and BASE jumper

Dean Spaulding Potter was an American free climber, alpinist, BASE jumper, and highliner. He completed many hard first ascents, free solo ascents, speed ascents, and enchainments in Yosemite National Park and Patagonia. He won the Laureus World Action Sportsperson of the Year in 2003. In 2015, he died in a wingsuit flying accident in Yosemite National Park.

Parachuting and skydiving are methods of descending from a high point in an atmosphere to the ground or ocean surface with the aid of gravity, involving the control of speed during the descent using a parachute or multiple parachutes.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Ueli Gegenschatz</span> Swiss skydiver (1971–2009)

Ueli "The Sputnik" Gegenschatz was a Swiss BASE jumper, paraglider and skydiver who made over 1,500 jumps in his career. Ueli Gegenschatz was known for his expert paragliding, skydiving and BASE jumping and Wingsuit flying, and was considered an idol of the Swiss BASE jumping scene.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Roberta Mancino</span>

Roberta Mancino is an Italian skydiver, BASE jumper, wingsuit flyer and international model. She has participated in more than 12,500 skydives and won several awards and world records. She has gone on four skydives while completely naked, and on five occasions her parachute did not open in mid-jump. In 2010, Mancino was named the World's Sexiest Female Athlete by the magazine Men's Fitness.

Dwain Weston was an Australian skydiver, BASE jumper, wingsuiter and software developer. On 5 October 2003, at the end of the inaugural Go Fast Games, Weston died while attempting to fly over the Royal Gorge Bridge near Cañon City, Colorado, United States.

Gary Connery is a British skydiver, BASE jumper, and professional stuntman. Connery has performed stunt-work in numerous films. He has also acted as the stunt-double for Gary Oldman, Leonardo DiCaprio, Rowan Atkinson, and John Hurt. He is acknowledged as the first skydiver to land after a wingsuit jump without using a parachute. He made his first parachute jump at age 23, as part of his army training.

Mark Sutton was a British stuntman who took part in the 2012 Summer Olympics opening ceremony by parachuting from a helicopter above the stadium as James Bond. He died in a wingsuit flying accident near Les Grandes Otanes in Switzerland. He had been travelling at around 125 miles per hour (201 km/h) when he hit a ridge.

Darío Barrio Domínguez was a Spanish television chef. He was best known for presenting Cuatro's Todos contra el chef for sixteen episodes from 2005 until 2006.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Skydive Empuriabrava</span> Parachuting in Spain

Skydive Empuriabrava is the brand that has been commercially operating Empuriabrava Aerodrome since 1985. Since it began operating, its main activity has been skydiving although it also offers photo flights, aerial and tourist advertising, and runs a school of aviation for private pilots.

Ramón Rojas was a Chilean BASE jumper. On 21 August 2014, he broke the world record for the highest wingsuit ski base jump, when he made a 4,100-metre (13,500 ft) leap from Cerro El Plomo in the Andes. He died less than a month later while practicing in Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland at the age of 35.

John Robert "Johnny" Strange was a world record holding adventurer. At 17, he became the youngest to climb the Seven Summits, a record now held by Jordan Romero at 15 years, 5 months and 12 days. He was also a professional wingsuit BASE jumper.

Luke Aikins is an American professional skydiver, BASE jumper, pilot, and aerial photographer. He is the first person to intentionally dive from mid-tropospheric altitude and land safely without a parachute or a wingsuit and the second skydiver to intentionally jump and safely land without using a parachute.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Jeff Provenzano</span> American professional skydiver (born 1976)

Jeff "Jeffro" Provenzano is an American professional skydiver, wingsuit flyer, BASE jumper, HALO jumper and stuntman. He is a member of the Red Bull Air Force, and is considered to be a pioneer of the skydiving discipline of swooping.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Ski-BASE jumping</span> Base jumping with skis

Ski-BASE jumping is the recreational sport of skiing at a high speed off of a cliff or mountain and free-falling through the air, using a parachute to descend to the ground, therefore combining the two sports of skiing and BASE jumping. Participants often perform tricks or manoeuvres during the freefall and remove their skis mid-air in order to safely deploy the parachute and land.

Vincent Reffet was a French BASE jumper, skydiver, wingsuit flyer, and jetman.
