This is a list of places in the Australian state of Victoria by population.
The figures below broadly represent the populations of the contiguous built-up area of each city or town as defined by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The population figures are drawn from the Australian Census Urban Centres and Localities data, where an "urban centre" is defined as a population cluster of 1,000 or more people. [1] Some urban centres include neighbouring towns; for example, the Mildura population in the table below includes Irymple. [2]
The table lists urban centres that have appeared in the top 50 in at least one census since 2001.

Traralgon is a town located in the east of the Latrobe Valley in the Gippsland region of Victoria, Australia and the most populous city in the City of Latrobe and the region. The urban population of Traralgon at the 2021 census was 26,907. It is the largest and fastest growing city in the greater Latrobe Valley area, which has a population of 77,168 at the 2021 Census and is administered by the City of Latrobe.
Melton is a suburb on the outskirts of Melbourne, Victoria. The suburb is located 47 kilometres (29 mi) west of Melbourne's Central Business District on the city's western rural-urban fringe. It is the administrative centre of the City of Melton local government area. As of the 2021 Australian census, the suburb has a population of 7,953.
The Rural City of Mildura is a local government area in Victoria, Australia, located in the north-western part of the state. It covers an area of 22,083 square kilometres (8,526 sq mi) being the largest LGA in the state. In August 2021 the area had a population of 56,972. It includes the city of Mildura and the towns of Merbein, Red Cliffs, Irymple, Ouyen, Werrimull, Murrayville, Walpeup and Hattah. It was formed in 1995 from the amalgamation of the City of Mildura, Shire of Mildura and Shire of Walpeup.
The Mansfield Shire is a local government area in the Hume region of Victoria, Australia, located in the north-east part of the state. It covers an area of 3,844 square kilometres (1,484 sq mi) and in August 2021, had a population of 10,178.
Mildura is a regional city in north-west Victoria, Australia. Located on the Victorian side of the Murray River, Mildura had a population of 34,565 in 2021. When nearby Wentworth, Irymple, Nichols Point, Merbein and Red Cliffs are included, the combined urban area had a population of 58,914 in 2021, having grown marginally at an average annual rate of 1.3% year-on-year over the preceding five years.
Pakenham is a suburb of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia, 53 km (33 mi) south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District and the most populous in the Shire of Cardinia. Pakenham recorded a population of 54,118 at the 2021 census.
Richmond is an inner-city suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 3 km (1.9 mi) east of the Melbourne central business district, located within the City of Yarra local government area. Richmond recorded a population of 28,587 at the 2021 census, with a median age of 34.
Oakleigh is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia 14 km south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Monash local government area. Oakleigh recorded a population of 8,442 at the 2021 census.
Caulfield is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Glen Eira local government area. Caulfield recorded a population of 5,748 at the 2021 census.
Tynong is a town in Gippsland, Victoria, Australia, 66 km south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the Shire of Cardinia local government area. Tynong recorded a population of 523 at the 2021 census.
Merbein is a town just north of Mildura, Victoria, in the Sunraysia region of Australia. It is on the Calder Highway between Mildura and the Murray River crossing at the Abbotsford Bridge to Curlwaa. At the 2016 census, the town had a population of 1,981. Merbein is 12 kilometres from Mildura, 553 km from Melbourne and 389 km from Adelaide.
Ouyen is a town in Victoria, Australia, located in the Rural City of Mildura at the junction of the Calder Highway and Mallee Highway, 105 kilometres (65 mi) south of Mildura, and 441 km (274 mi) northwest of Melbourne. At the 2016 census, the town had a population of 1,045.
Barham is a town in the western Riverina district of New South Wales, Australia. The town is located 823 kilometres south west of the state capital, Sydney and 303 kilometres north west of Melbourne. Situated on the banks of the Murray River across from Koondrook in the neighbouring state of Victoria, Barham had a population of 1,159 at the 2016 census. The town is in the Murray River Council local government area.
Mount Burnett is a small country town and bounded locality located approximately 72 kilometres (45 mi) from Melbourne, in Victoria, Australia, located within the Shire of Cardinia local government area. Mount Burnett recorded a population of 180 at the 2021 census.
Walpeup is a town in the Mallee region of north west Victoria. The town is in the Rural City of Mildura local government area and on the Mallee Highway and Pinnaroo railway line between Ouyen and the South Australian border, 458 kilometres (285 mi) north west of the state capital, Melbourne and 130 kilometres (81 mi) south west of the regional centre of Mildura. At the 2016 census, Walpeup had a population of 158.
Lascelles is a town in Victoria, Australia, located approximately 113 km from Swan Hill, Victoria. In the 2016 census the state suburb of Lascelles had a population of 93.
