History

Maccabi Tel Aviv's European history began in 1992 when the Israeli Football Association joined UEFA. 1992–93 was Maccabi's first European season. On 19 August 1992, Maccabi won 2-1 their first match against Valletta F.C. in Malta. Maccabi Tel Aviv qualified twice to the Champions League group stage in seasons 2004–05 and 2015–16. in 2013–14 and 2020–21 Europa League season Maccabi qualified to the Round of 32 stage. in 2023–24 Europa Conference League season Maccabi qualified to the Round of 16 stage.

The 2002–03 UEFA Champions League was the 11th season of UEFA's premier European club football tournament, the UEFA Champions League, since its rebranding in 1992, and the 48th European Cup tournament overall. The competition was won by Milan, who beat Juventus on penalties in the European Cup's first ever all-Italian final, to win their sixth European title, and its first in nine years. Manchester United's Ruud van Nistelrooy was again the top scorer, scoring 12 goals over the two group stages and knockout stage, in addition to two goals he had scored in the qualifying phase, although his side bowed out in the quarter-finals and missed out on the chance of playing in a final at their own stadium.

The 2006–07 UEFA Cup was the 36th edition of the UEFA Cup, Europe's second-tier club football tournament. On 16 May 2007, at Hampden Park, Glasgow, Scotland, Sevilla won their second consecutive UEFA Cup, defeating Espanyol 3–1 on penalties after the match finished 2–2 after extra time. Sevilla became the second side to win the competition for two consecutive seasons, following the hiatus of the original record holder Real Madrid achieved in 1985 and 1986.

The 2011–12 UEFA Europa League was the third season of the UEFA Europa League, Europe's secondary club football tournament organised by UEFA, and the 41st edition overall including its predecessor, the UEFA Cup. It began on 30 June 2011 with the first legs of the first qualifying round, and ended on 9 May 2012 with the final held at Arena Națională in Bucharest, Romania. As part of a trial that started in the 2009–10 UEFA Europa League, two extra officials – one on each goal line – were used in all matches of the competition from the group stage.

A total of 20 Greek clubs have participated in European competitions so far. Olympiacos made the first appearance when they took part in the 1959–60 European Cup and is the club with the most overall apps/matches. They are also the only Greek team to have won a European trophy and the first team in Europe to win both senior and youth European titles in the same season, after winning the UEFA Conference League and the UEFA Youth League in 2024. Other important landmarks of Greek football in European competitions are the participation of Panathinaikos in the 1971 European Cup final and in the semi-finals of the 1985 and 1996 editions. The best UEFA Cup campaign was AEK Athens run to the semi-finals in 1977. Greek clubs have reached at least the quarter-finals of a European competition on 19 occasions in total.

The 2010–11 season was Olympiacos's 52nd consecutive season in the Super League Greece and their 85th year in existence.

Maccabi Haifa Football Club is one of the three most successful Israeli clubs in European competition. Maccabi Haifa was the first Israeli to qualify for the Champions League Group stage, the first to do so twice and the only one to do so three times. Maccabi Haifa has also qualified to the Quarter-finals of European Cup Winners' Cup, to the Round of 16 in UEFA cup and one time to the Round of 16 of the UEFA Conference League. In the Second qualifying round of Europa League, they won 8–0 vs Khazar Lankaran a new record or any Israeli team in European competition. Over the years Maccabi Haifa has played against large clubs in the same continent, such as Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United, Liverpool, Bayern Munich or Juventus.

Maccabi Tel Aviv are an Israeli football club which are based in Tel Aviv. During the 2013–14 campaign the club have competed in the Israeli Premier League, State Cup, UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League.

The 2015–16 season is Maccabi Tel Aviv's 110th season since its establishment in 1906, and 68th since the establishment of the State of Israel. During the 2015–16 campaign the club have competed in the Israeli Premier League, State Cup, Toto Cup, Israel Super Cup UEFA Champions League.

The 2016–17 UEFA Europa League group stage began on 15 September and ended on 9 December 2016. A total of 48 teams competed in the group stage to decide 24 of the 32 places in the knockout phase of the 2016–17 UEFA Europa League.

Israeli football clubs have competed in international football tournaments since 1967, when Hapoel Tel Aviv played in the inaugural Asian Champion Club Tournament. Two Israeli clubs, Hapoel Tel Aviv and Maccabi Tel Aviv, competed in all four editions of the Asian Champion Club Tournament before it was discontinued after the 1972 edition was cancelled. The Israel Football Association was expelled from the AFC in 1974, with Israeli clubs not being invited to take part in the competition when it was revived as the Asian Club Championship in 1985.

The 2004–05 season was PAOK Football Club's 79th in existence and the club's 46th consecutive season in the top flight of Greek football. The team will enter the Greek Football Cup in the first round and will also enter in Champions League starting from the third qualifying round.

The 2023–24 season was the 99th season in existence of Olympiacos and the club's 65th consecutive season in the top flight of Greek football. The season covered the period from 1 July 2023 to 30 June 2024.
