Mbarara University of Science & Technology (MUST), commonly known as Mbarara University, is a public university in Uganda. Mbarara University commenced student intake and instruction in 1989. It is one of the eight public universities and degree-awarding institutions in the country. MUST is accredited by the Uganda National Council for Higher Education. [3]

History

The University was founded in 1989 to address the shortage of scientists in Uganda and to instill a sense of community service in its students. [8]

As of January 2011, the student body numbered 3,163; 3001 undergraduates and 62 postgraduates. The university employs over 200 staff members. [9]

Governance

Mbarara University of Science and Technology is administered by three bodies; the University Council, the University Senate and the University Top Management. [10]

University Council

The University Council is the supreme organ of the university responsible for the overall administration and ensuring that the establishment objectives and functions of the university are duly implemented. The Council members are drawn from stakeholders including university staff, students, and members from the Ministry of Education, other government departments, University Convocation, the Private Sector and the general public.

University Senate

The University Senate is responsible for overall administration, of all academic programs. The current Senate is instituted in accordance with the provisions of the Universities and other Tertiary Institutions Act of 2001, as enacted by the Parliament of Uganda.

Top management

The top management consists of the Vice Chancellor, Deputy Vice Chancellor, University Secretary, Academic Registrar, Dean of Students, and the Executive Director of Mbarara Hospital.

University Teaching Hospital

The university teaching hospital is Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, a 600-bed public hospital that also serves as the referral hospital for the districts of: Mbarara, Bushenyi, Ntungamo, Kiruhura, Ibanda, Mitooma, Sheema, Buhweju, Isingiro and Rubirizi.

Victoria University Uganda (VUU), also known as Victoria University Kampala, is a university in Uganda, accredited by the Uganda National Council for Higher Education (UNCHE). It offers short, professional, diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

Kampala International University School of Health Sciences (KIUSHS), is the school of health sciences of Kampala International University, a private Ugandan university. The school provides health sciences education at the diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

International University of East Africa Private university in Uganda

International University of East Africa (IUEA) is a private university in Uganda.

Cavendish University Uganda (CUU) is licensed and accredited by the Uganda National Council for Higher Education (UNCHE), and was established in 2008.

The Uganda Technology and Management University (UTAMU) is a private university in Uganda founded in 2012 and licensed by the Uganda National Council for Higher Education (UNCHE).

Charity Basaza Mulenga is a Ugandan electrical engineer and academic administrator. She was the founding vice chancellor of St. Augustine International University (SAIU), a private institution of higher education that the Uganda National Council for Higher Education accredited in 2011.

Frederick Ian Bantubano Kayanja is a Ugandan veterinarian, academic, and academic administrator. He has been the chancellor of Gulu University, a public institution of higher education, since October 2014, replacing Martin Aliker. He is a former vice chancellor of the Mbarara University of Science and Technology. He assumed that position in 1989 and stepped down in October 2014. Before that, he served as the deputy vice chancellor of Makerere University, the oldest and largest public university in Uganda.

Pamela Kasabiiti Mbabazi is a Ugandan university professor, academic, and academic administrator, who currently serves as the Chairperson of the National Planning Authority of Uganda. She was installed in that position in April 2019, to serve a five-year term, renewable one time.

Professor Emmanuel Karooro is a Ugandan educator, academic and academic administrator, who serves as the Vice-Chancellor at Ibanda University, a private co-educational institution of higher learning in the Western Region of Uganda.

Valley University of Science and Technology (VUST), is a private university in Uganda. In October 2015, the proprietors of the university received accreditation from the Uganda National Council for Higher Education, to start the institution.

ISBAT University (ISBAT), whose complete name is International Business, Science And Technology University, is a chartered university in Uganda.

Team University (TU) is a private, co-educational Ugandan university in the Buganda Region of Uganda. It is accredited as a "private university", by the Uganda National Council for Higher Education (UNCHE).
