Montanha is a settlement in the central part of the island of Santiago, Cape Verde. It is situated 2 km north of João Teves and 8 km southwest of Pedra Badejo. The area is intensively farmed; mainly maize, beans and sugar-cane.

João Teves is a city in the central part of the island of Santiago, Cape Verde. It is situated 19 km northwest of the capital Praia, on the national road from Praia to Assomada (EN1-ST01). It is the seat of São Lourenço dos Órgãos municipality. A source river of the Ribeira Seca flows through the town.

Mahogany trees

There are two African mahogany trees near the village of Banana (part of the settlement Montanha), standing at the bottom of the Ribeira Montanha valley, 400 m above sea level. The trees were identified as an Important Bird Area (IBA) by BirdLife International because they support a colony of purple herons [2] or Bourne's herons. [3] [4]

Bourne's heron, also known as the Cape Verde heron, Cape Verde purple heron or Santiago heron, or locally in Portuguese as the garça vermelha, is an endangered subspecies of the purple heron that is endemic to the Cape Verde archipelago, in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of West Africa. It is sometimes considered a full species, Ardea bournei.

The Lagoas de Pedra Badejo is an area of wetlands on the island of Santiago, Cape Verde. It is a 666-hectare (1,650-acre) site comprising two coastal lagoons at the estuaries of the rivers Ribeira dos Picos and Ribeira Seca, and the entire basin of the latter, including the reservoir Barragem de Poilão. It lies south of the town of Pedra Badejo, on the north-east coast of the island. The lagoons are of great ecological value for birds as they contain fresh or only slightly brackish water. They have been recognised as a wetland of international importance by designation under the Ramsar Convention since 2005.

Ribeira da Trindade

Ribeira da Trindade is a stream in the southern part of the island of Santiago in Cape Verde. It is the most important river of Praia, the capital of Cape Verde. Its basin area is 24.9 km2 (9.6 sq mi). The stream flows northwest to southeast and is about 15 km in length. Its source is in the municipality of São Domingos, near the settlement Achada Mitra. It flows through the city of Praia and discharges into the Praia Harbour, near the city centre.

Ribeira Seca (Santiago) stream in Cape Verde

Ribeira Seca is the largest stream of the island of Santiago in Cape Verde. It is 18 km (11 mi) long and its basin area is 71.5 km2 (27.6 sq mi). Located in the eastern part of the island, it flows through the municipalities of São Lourenço dos Órgãos and Santa Cruz. Its source is near the highest point of the island, Pico de Antónia, from where it flows to the east to João Teves. It turns to the northeast and flows into the Atlantic Ocean at Achada Fazenda, 2 km southeast of Pedra Badejo. It is called Ribeira de Pico da Antónia in its uppermost part, and Ribeira de Lage near João Teves.
