"Nun jauchzt dem Herren, alle Welt" (Now rejoice to the Lord, all the world) is a German Christian hymn, a paraphrase of Psalm 100. The text was written by David Denicke, based on a metered paraphrase of the psalm from the Becker Psalter, and published in his 1646 hymnal. The song appears in modern German-language hymnals, such as the Protestant Evangelisches Gesangbuch and the Catholic Gotteslob . With a joyful melody derived from a 14th-century model, it is one of the most popular psalm songs in German.
David Denicke, who had studied law and travelled in Europe, worked from 1629 for George, Duke of Brunswick-Calenberg, as a tutor of his two eldest sons. [1] From 1639, he was abbot of the Stift Bursfelde. [1] [2] [3] In 1640 he settled in Hannover where he resumed working for George, who had moved his residence and built the Leineschloss. Denicke first worked as a Hofrat (court councillor), then from 1942 as Konsistorialrat (church councillor). He married in 1643. [1] [2]
Denicke collaborated with Justus Gesenius, a Hofprediger (court preacher), to publish a hymnal in 1646 which was mostly intended for private use. [1] It was entitled New Ordentlich Gesang-Buch, Sampt Einer nothwendigen Vorrede u. Erinnerung Von dessen nützlichem Gebrauch (New orderly song-book, with a necessary preface and reminder of its fruitful use). [1] [4] It was meant to "encourage private devotion". [5] It was a forerunner to the Hannoversches Gesangbuch for public use, which first appeared in Lüneburg in 1657. [1] [2]
Denicke wrote the text as a paraphrase of Psalm 100 (known as Jubilate), which calls on the believer to serve God with gladness in joyful sound. [3] [6] The psalm begins in English "Make a joyful noise unto the Lord", according to the Book of Common Prayer. [6] Denicke rephrased a work by Cornelius Becker, "Jauchzet dem Herren alle Welt" from the Becker Psalter of 1602, [6] [7] to polish its language according to the poetry standards of Martin Opitz. Instead of the four stanzas in the Becker psalter, he wrote six stanzas following the psalm. He elaborated the thought of God as a Good Shepherd, as expressed in Psalm 23, and the duty of the believer to praise God. [6] The song became part of the 1646 hymnal. [2] A seventh stanza was added as a doxology (Gloria Patri) in the 1648 edition, which was exchanged for another doxology in the 1653 Lüneburg edition of the hymnal. [2]
The hymn appears, with slightly modernised text, in the modern German-language hymnals for both Protestants and Catholics, in the Evangelisches Gesangbuch of 1993 as EG 288, and in the Gotteslob of 2013 as GL 144. [6] [8] The Catholic version uses a different doxology stanza. [9] The psalm song is also part of Swiss hymnals, [9] and of many songbooks, including collections for families, children and young adults. [10]
While several sources claim that the hymn is known in English as "All People that on Earth do Dwell", [3] that 1650 hymn by William Kethe is rather a translation from the Genevan Psalter, sung to the melody Old 100th. [11]
The text in the 2013 Gotteslob, slightly revised compared to the original, is given juxtaposed with the Psalm 100 verses in the King James Version, with the final stanza being a metric paraphrase of the Gloria Patri:

Denicke based his poem on the four stanzas from the Becker Psalter, which are a close paraphrase of the psalm verses, titled "100. Psalm. Christus, ein gnädiger Herr." (... Christ, a merciful Lord). Following the reformer Martin Luther, the psalms were interpreted as related to Christ. Denicke's version is in iambic metre, and has been described as a piece of art, with clear diction, close use of the Biblical images, and a modest "voice". [9]
The two editors of the Hannoversches Gesangbuch note in their foreword that their intention is clear language without poetic artistry, following the standards by Martin Opitz. In the first stanza, Denicke added to the topics of psalm text the idea "säumet nicht" (do not postpone), giving praise and service of God highest priority. The second stanza emphasizes that we are creatures compared to sheep. While Denicke wrote "zu Schafen" (as sheep), a later ecumenical version replaced it by "als guter Hirt" (as the good shepherd), a phrase from Psalm 23. [12]
The fourth stanza begins "Die ihr nun wollet bei ihm sein", pointing to the willingness to be close to God. While the psalm meant literally "the Temple in Jerusalem", Denicke means any place where praise and service take place. [12] The fifth stanza adds that the praise of God is "unser Amt" (our office), interpreted as a service rendered voluntarily. The sixth stanza adds, to the Biblical "Gnade und Wahrheit" (mercy and truth), "Güte, Liebe und Treue" (goodness, love and faithfulness". [9]
The melody assigned to Denicke's hymn, in triple metre, first appeared in the 14th century Moosburg Cantionale. [13] It was originally used for a Christmas carol. [6] The melody appears in the 1646 hymnal as one of eleven melodies in the appendix. In its 1657 edition, it is associated with "Nun jauchzt dem Herren, alle Welt". [13]
The melody begins with the tonic in low range, rises a fifth and returns to the first note at the end of the first line. The second line moves up an octave, beginning with a bold leap of a fifth. The third and forth line return to the tonic almost in symmetry. The melody has been described as joyful and graceful ("Freude und Anmut"). [13] The outline of the melody has been compared to a gate (Tor), fitting for the phrase "geht zu seinen Toren ein" (enter through his gates). [6] The melody matches the text well, making "Nun jauchzt dem Herren, alle Welt" one of the most popular psalm songs, sung ecumenically. [13]
Between 1953 and 1962, Johannes Petzold composed six different settings of the hymn, for voices and for instruments. [14] Karl Norbert Schmid composed a song cantata (Liedkantate) for congregation, choir, organ and winds ad lib. in 1986. [15] Francesco Giannoni composed a chorale prelude in 2007. [16] Enjott Schneider wrote a Fantasie for choir, organ and congregational singing, commissioned for the 150th anniversary of the Deutscher Cäcilienverein celebrated at the Regensburg Cathedral in 2018. "Old 100th" or "Old Hundredth" is a hymn tune in long metre, from the second edition of the Genevan Psalter. It is one of the best known melodies in many occidental Christian musical traditions. The tune is usually attributed to the French composer Louis Bourgeois.
Psalm 98 is the 98th psalm of the Book of Psalms, beginning in English in the King James Version: "O sing unto the Lord a new song; for he hath done marvellous things". The Book of Psalms starts the third section of the Hebrew Bible, and, as such, is a book of the Christian Old Testament. In the slightly different numbering system in the Greek Septuagint version of the Bible, and in the Latin Vulgate, this psalm is Psalm 97. In Latin, it is known as "Cantate Domino". The psalm is a hymn psalm, one of the Royal Psalms, praising God as the King of His people. Like Psalms 33 and 96, it calls for the singing of "a new song".
"Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland" is a Lutheran chorale of 1524 with words written by Martin Luther, based on "Veni redemptor gentium" by Ambrose, and a melody, Zahn 1174, based on its plainchant. It was printed in the Erfurt Enchiridion of 1524.

"Nun lob, mein Seel, den Herren" is a Lutheran hymn written in German by the theologian and reformer Johann Gramann in 1525. It was published in 1540 and appears in 47 hymnals. A translation by Catherine Winkworth, "My Soul, now Praise thy Maker!", was published in 1863.
"O Welt, sieh hier dein Leben" is a Lutheran Passion hymn in German by Paul Gerhardt. In 16 stanzas of 6 lines, it was first published in 1647 in Johann Crüger's Praxis pietatis melica. The hymn is known as the source for chorales in Bach's Passions. It was translated to English in several versions, for example "O, World! behold upon the tree" by Catherine Winkworth in 1858.
"Christ ist erstanden" is a German Easter hymn, and is possibly the oldest Christian liturgical German song. It has inspired the music of numerous composers, such as Ludwig Senfl and Heinrich Schütz, as well as modern composers such as Oskar Gottlieb Blarr and Enjott Schneider, and has appeared in 45 hymnals, including the current German Catholic and Protestant hymnals. Translations and paraphrases include a version by Catherine Winkworth which has appeared in 231 hymnals. "Christ ist erstanden" also inspired Martin Luther to write "Christ lag in Todes Banden", deriving the melody from it.
"Mitten wir im Leben sind mit dem Tod umfangen" is a Lutheran hymn, with words written by Martin Luther based on the Latin antiphon "Media vita in morte sumus". The hymn in three stanzas was first published in 1524. The hymn inspired composers from the Renaissance to contemporary to write chorale preludes and vocal compositions. Catherine Winkworth translated Luther's song to English in 1862. It has appeared in hymnals of various denominations.
"Allein Gott in der Höh sei Ehr" is an early Lutheran hymn, with text and melody attributed to Nikolaus Decius. With the reformers intending church service in German, it was intended as a German version of the Gloria part of the Latin mass, used in almost every service. Decius wrote three stanzas, probably in 1523, while a fourth was added, probably by Joachim Slüter.
"In dich hab ich gehoffet, Herr" is a Lutheran hymn in seven stanzas, written by Adam Reusner and first published in 1533. He paraphrased the beginning of Psalm 31. It was first sung to the melody of a Passion hymn. The melody connected with the hymn in 1560 was derived from models dating back to the 14th century. A third melody from 1608 became a hymn tune for several other songs and translations to English. In the German Protestant hymnal Evangelisches Gesangbuch, the hymn appears as EG 257 with the second melody. Johann Sebastian Bach used the second and third melodies in chorale preludes, and the third also in cantatas and the St Matthew Passion.
"Nun danket all und bringet Ehr" is a German Lutheran hymn in nine stanzas, with a text written by Paul Gerhardt. It was first published in 1647, in Johann Crüger's Praxis pietatis melica which was the first publication of hymns by Gerhardt. In the 1653 edition, Crüger added a melody that he composed. As a general song of thanks, the song has appeared in several hymnals, including the German Protestant hymnal Evangelisches Gesangbuch and the Catholic hymnal Gotteslob. It has inspired musical settings by composers from the 17th to the 21st century. Johann Sebastian Bach used the first stanza in a cantata, however with the melody of "Lobt Gott, ihr Christen alle gleich", Hugo Distler composed a chorale cantata, and Günter Berger based a toccata for organ on it.
"Macht hoch die Tür" is a popular German Advent hymn, written in 17th century Ducal Prussia. The lyrics were written by Georg Weissel in 1623 for the inauguration of the Altroßgärter Kirche in Königsberg. The melody that is now associated with the text appeared first in 1704 in the hymnal by Johann Anastasius Freylinghausen.
"Mein ganzes Herz erhebet dich" is the beginning of German hymns to a melody from the 16th century, which paraphrase Psalm 138. They are part of Protestant and Catholic hymnals.
"Dein Lob, Herr, ruft der Himmel aus" is a German Catholic hymn. Adolf Lohmann adapted a 1659 hymn by the Jesuit astronomer Albert Curtz, who paraphrased Psalm 19. The melody appeared in Augsburg in 1669. It was No. 1 in the 1938 hymnal Kirchenlied and is part of the German Catholic hymnal Gotteslob as GL 381.
"Nun lässest du, o Herr" is a Christian hymn by Georg Thurmair written in 1966 as a paraphrase of the Nunc dimittis canticle. It was part of the German Catholic hymnal Gotteslob of 1975 as GL 660 with a 16th-century melody by Loys Bourgeois. With this melody, it is also part of the Protestant hymnal Evangelisches Gesangbuch as EG 695. It is part of the second edition of the Gotteslob as GL 500, with a new 1994 melody.
"Nun singt ein neues Lied dem Herren" is a Christian hymn with German text by Georg Thurmair. He based it on Psalm 98 and wrote it in 1967 to match a traditional 16th-century melody. The song is part of German hymnals, including Gotteslob, and songbooks.
"Macht weit die Pforten in der Welt" is a Christian hymn with German text by Albert Knapp written for the Basel Mission and first published in 1829. It appeared in 19th-century German hymnals, to be sung with the melody of "Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern". It appeared in the 1938 hymnal Kirchenlied with a new melody by Adolf Lohmann. The song is part of the 2013 German Catholic hymnal Gotteslob.
"Nun lasst uns gehn und treten" is a Lutheran hymn for New Year's Day by Paul Gerhardt. It appeared first in 1653 in Praxis Pietatis Melica. It is sung to the melody of "Nun laßt uns Gott dem Herren".
"Nun saget Dank und lobt den Herren" is a Christian hymn in German, paraphrasing Psalm 118. The German text was originally written by Ambrosius Lobwasser in the 16th century as a translation, meant to match the music from the French Genevan Psalter. It was rewritten and shortened in the 20th century by Peter Enderlin to be used in a hymnal of the Swiss Reformed Church. The song is included in German hymnals of various denominations.
