Placospermum is a genus of a single species of large trees, constituting part of the plant family Proteaceae. [1] [2] The species Placospermum coriaceum is endemic to the rainforests of the wet tropics region of northeastern Queensland, Australia. [2] [3] [4] Common names include rose silky oak and plate-seeded oak. [4]

History

The genus and species were first formally scientifically described in 1924 by Cyril T. White and William D. Francis. [2] [5] The precise relationships of the genus were unclear, though it was clear it was an early offshoot within the Proteaceae and retained primitive characteristics, until Lawrie Johnson and Barbara G. Briggs classified it in the subfamily Persoonioideae in their 1975 monograph "On the Proteaceae: the evolution and classification of a southern family". They noted that it had large chromosomes, like those of Persoonia and allied genera, as well as sharing some other primitive features. [6]

Description

Placospermum coriaceum trees grow to 30 m (100 ft) tall in their native rainforests, and are likely to be much smaller in cultivation. Leaves on the youngest plants are simple and oblanceolate, but large lobed intermediate leaves soon appear. These are up to 90 cm (36 in) long with up to nine lobes up to 20 cm (8 in) long each. The adult leaves are once again simple, and are spathulate or oblanceolate and up to 17 cm (7 in) long and leathery. The pinkish flowers grow in racemes at the end of branches. [7] Flattened oval fruit follow, which measure 3.5-4 by 3 cm. Each contains many seeds. [4] Like other members of the Persoonioideae, Placospermum coriaceum lacks the cluster roots typical of most Proteaceae. [8]

The large lobed immature leaves are an attractive feature, and Placospermum coriaceum has been cultivated as an indoor plant. [7]

Alloxylon flammeum, commonly known as the Queensland tree waratah or red silky oak, is a medium-sized tree of the family Proteaceae found in the Queensland tropical rain forests of northeastern Australia. It has shiny green elliptical leaves up to 18 cm (7.1 in) long, and prominent orange-red inflorescences that appear from August to October, followed by rectangular woody seed pods that ripen in February and March. Juvenile plants have large deeply lobed pinnate leaves. Previously known as Oreocallis wickhamii, the initial specimen turned out to be a different species to the one cultivated and hence a new scientific name was required. Described formally by Peter Weston and Mike Crisp in 1991, A. flammeum was designated the type species of the genus Alloxylon. This genus contains the four species previously classified in Oreocallis that are found in Australasia.

Buckinghamia is a genus of only two known species of trees, belonging to the plant family Proteaceae. They are endemic to the rainforests of the wet tropics region of north eastern Queensland, Australia. The ivory curl flower, B. celsissima, is the well known, popular and widely cultivated species in gardens and parks, in eastern and southern mainland Australia, and additionally as street trees north from about Brisbane. The second species, B. ferruginiflora, was only recently described in 1988.

It has shiny green leaves that are either pinnate (lobed) and up to 30 cm (12 in) long, or lanceolate (spear-shaped) and up to 15 cm (5.9 in) long. The prominent pinkish-red flower heads, known as inflorescences, appear in spring and summer; these are made up of 50 to 140 individual flowers arranged in corymb or raceme. These are followed by rectangular woody seed pods, which bear two rows of winged seeds.

Eucarpha is a genus of flowering plant of the family Proteaceae, endemic to New Caledonia. Two species are recognised. Up to 1975, these were classified within the genus Knightia until Lawrence Johnson and Barbara G. Briggs recognised their distinctness, particularly their prominent bracts, in their 1975 monograph "On the Proteaceae: the evolution and classification of a southern family". Nomenclatural combinations for these two species in the genus Eucarpha were published in 2022.
