Ripley Historic District is a historic district comprising the central portion of Ripley, Mississippi. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. [1]

The district was listed for its significance to community planning and development, commerce, and agriculture. The buildings reflect Ripley's development as the county seat of Tippah County. The district contains 284 contributing properties and one contributing object, a Confederate memorial. These buildings date from the 1840s through 1954, the end of the period for which the nomination was submitted. The town was founded in 1837, but there are no commercial structures that remain from the pre-American Civil War era. [2]

The district is centered on the Tippah County Courthouse, the historic and symbolic central building in the city, which was built in 1928. The courthouse is surrounded by several blocks of commercial buildings, which primarily extend to the north, south, and west and were mostly built between 1910 and 1940. The district includes the old U.S. post office, which was also added to the National Register in 2000. The district also includes the former Tippah County Jail, an Art Moderne building built in 1938; four historic churches; and a variety of houses. The homes in the district are mainly bungalows and Tudor Revival buildings; most were built between 1910 and 1940, though some were constructed as early as the 1840s. [2]

The district grew around the Washita County Courthouse site, which was planned in 1897 when the townsite was laid out. The commercial buildings surrounding the courthouse were mainly built from 1900 to 1925; some newer buildings, including several on First Street, are also part of the district. 80 buildings are included in the district, of which 52 are considered contributing buildings to the district's historic character. The Washington Downtown Historic District is a nationally recognized historic district located in Washington, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013. At the time of its nomination it contained 122 resources, which included 83 contributing buildings, two contributing objects, one contributing site, 34 non-contributing buildings, one non-contributing structure, and one non-contributing object. The historic district is located in the original town plat, and covers the city's central business district. Washington was platted in 1839 as the county seat for Washington County. Central Park, the town square, is the earliest contributing resource having been platted with the original town. It is the contributing site and contains the two contributing objects: the 1931 Civil War monument and the 1939 fountain. The Washington County Courthouse was located here from 1845 to 1869, when it was relocated to its present location a block away. It is one of the contributing buildings. The oldest extant buildings date to the 1850s.

Lucas County Courthouse Square Historic District is a nationally recognized historic district located in Chariton, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014. At the time of its nomination the district consisted of 76 resources, including 56 contributing buildings, one contributing site, one contributing structure, three contributing objects, 14 noncontributing buildings, one noncontributing structure, and one noncontributing object. The historic district covers the city's central business district in the original town plat. The buildings were either built or remodeled between 1867 and 1963, and range from one to three stories in height. They all have brick exteriors. Of the older buildings, the commercial Italianate style is dominant.

Eldora Downtown Historic District United States historic place

The Eldora Downtown Historic District is a nationally recognized historic district located in Eldora, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. At the time of its nomination the district consisted of 84 resources, including 65 contributing buildings, one contributing site, three contributing objects and 15 non-contributing buildings. The district takes in the city's central business district, which also includes its governmental, educational, and religious activities. It is located in the original town plat from 1853. Development began around the public square and spread out from there. The present building stock is second generation at the earliest. The oldest extant buildings were built in the 1870s, although the greatest number of buildings were constructed in the 1890s. There were also peak years of construction in the 1910s, and the late 1930s and 1940s. The commercial buildings generally range from one to two stories, but the tallest structure is three stories in height. They are primarily composed of brick construction. Late Victorian and various revival styles from the late 19th and 20th centuries are dominant. The non-commercial buildings include four government buildings, four churches, three residences, a hospital, and a school.

Fayette Courthouse Square Historic District is a national historic district located at Fayette, Howard County, Missouri. The district encompasses 35 contributing buildings in the central business district of Fayette. It developed between about 1828 and 1947 and includes representative examples of Second Empire, Italianate, and Romanesque Revival style architecture. Located in the district is the separately listed Dr. Uriel S. Wright Office. Other notable buildings include the Fayette Public Library (1914), City Hall (1925), New Opera House Block (1903), A. F. Davis Bank, Commercial Bank (1910), The New Century Block Building (1902), Bell Block Building (1883), U.S. Post Office Building (1925), Howard County Jail and Residence, and Howard County Courthouse (1887).

Harlan Commercial District United States historic place

The Harlan Commercial District is a primarily commercial historic district in downtown Harlan, Kentucky. The district is centered on the Harlan County Courthouse and includes 41 buildings which contribute to its historic character. While Harlan was founded much earlier as a rural town, it grew considerably when the Louisville & Nashville Railroad built a line through the city in 1911; all of the contributing buildings within the district were built between 1910 and 1936. Nearly all of the buildings feature commercial-style architecture; the exceptions are the Classical Revival courthouse and post office and one Moderne commercial building. Downtown Harlan served as the social, civic, and economic center of the Harlan County mining community, particularly during the mining boom of the 1920s, and the courthouse became the site of several murder trials and legal battles during the Harlan County War.

The Pontiac Commercial Historic District is a primarily commercial historic district located roughly along East Huron and South Saginaw Streets, within loop of Wide Track Drive, in Pontiac, Michigan. The core of the district, within the block bounded by Saginaw, Lawrence, Pike, and Wayne Streets, was originally listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. A boundary increase creating the present boundaries was listed in 1989. The district includes the Eagle Theater and the Grinnell Brothers Music House, also listed on the National Register.

Waterloo East Commercial Historic District United States historic place

The Waterloo East Commercial Historic District is a nationally recognized historic district located in Waterloo, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011. At the time of its nomination the district consisted of 36 resources, including 28 contributing buildings, and eight non-contributing buildings. The city of Waterloo was established in the early 1850s. Its first settlers started developing the west side of the city before crossing the Cedar River and developing east side. The first Black Hawk County Courthouse was built on the east side in 1856 and East Waterloo Township was created two years later. As industry began to develop along the river, and the arrival of the first railroad in 1861, the commercial district on the east side began to grow. Also on the east side of town was the terminus of the streetcar-turned-interurban system. By 1900, the city became one of the primary wholesale and retail centers in northeastern Iowa. In 1911 the Black population increased significantly as workers, primarily from Mississippi, moved into town to work for the Illinois Central Railroad. The following year the saloons in town were closed and bootlegging, gambling, drugs, and prostitution started to increase in the area surrounding the central business district. All of these developed put together created the atmosphere of the downtown commercial district.

Davenport Downtown Commercial Historic District United States historic place

The Davenport Downtown Commercial Historic District is a nationally recognized historic district located in the central business district of Davenport, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2020. At the time of its nomination it consisted of 43 resources, which included 33 contributing buildings, one contributing structure, and nine non-contributing buildings. In addition, the district also contains 33 buildings that are individually listed on the National Register. This historic district is bordered by four other districts: the Crescent Warehouse Historic District and the Davenport Motor Row and Industrial Historic District on the east, the Hamburg Historic District to the northwest, and the West Third Street Historic District on the west.
