Rosedale, a historic property comprising the Graves Mill ruins, Christopher Johnson Cottage, and Rosedale mansion, is located at Lynchburg, Virginia. The Rosedale property contains two buildings of major importance, the ruins of an 18th-century grist mill, and numerous subsidiary buildings. The earliest structure remaining is the Christopher Johnson Cottage, dating from ca. 1764 to 1774. The small, 1+1⁄2-story frame structure has long been known as the Johnson Cottage. The Rosedale mansion was erected in 1836 by Odin Clay, the first president of the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad, and is a two-story, three-bay, brick home laid in Flemish bond. The house was enlarged in 1929; a three-bay brick wing was added the original house. It was designed by Lynchburg architect Stanhope S. Johnson, who is best known for designing the Allied Arts Building. [3]
It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, with a boundary increase in 1992. [1]

The Virginia Randolph Cottage, now the Virginia E. Randolph Museum, is a museum at 2200 Mountain Road in Glen Allen, Virginia. The museum is dedicated to the history of Virginia E. Randolph (1874–1958), an African-American vocational educator in the area for 55 years. The building, built in 1937 and housing Randolph's home economics classrooms, is a National Historic Landmark in recognition of her legacy as a trainer of vocational teachers, and her remains are interred on the grounds. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1974.
The Allied Arts Building is a historic high-rise building located at 725 Church Street in Lynchburg, Virginia. It is currently being remodeled for apartments.
The Jones Memorial Library Building is a historic library building located on Rivermont Avenue at Lynchburg, Virginia. It was designed by the local architectural firm of Frye & Chesterman. It was erected in 1906–07 in the Neo-Classical Revival style.
The Kentucky Hotel is a historic hotel building located at Lynchburg, Virginia. It is one of Lynchburg's three remaining early 19th century ordinaries. It was probably built before 1800, and is a 2+1⁄2-story structure of brick laid in Flemish bond. In about 1814, two side bays were completed, converting the house to a center hall plan.
Point of Honor is an historic home, now a city museum, located in Lynchburg, Virginia. The property has commanding views of the city and the James River. Its name originated due to the land on which it is built being used as a clandestine dueling ground.
John Marshall Warwick House is a historic home located at Lynchburg, Virginia. It was built in 1826 by prominent Lynchburg tobacconist and city mayor (1833), John Marshall Warwick. It was one of the first houses to be built on the crest of Lynchburg Hill, later to be called Court House Hill, overlooking the James River. It exhibits the transition from the Federal to the Greek Revival styles. His grandson, United States Senator John Warwick Daniel was born in this home.
The South River Friends Meetinghouse, or Quaker Meeting House, is a historic Friends meeting house located at Lynchburg, Virginia. It was completed in 1798. It is a rubble stone structure, approximately 30 by 51 feet, with walls 16 inches thick, and 12 feet high. The building ceased as a Quaker meeting house in the 1840s, and stands on the grounds of the Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church. Adjacent to the structure is a historic graveyard. Buried there are Sarah Lynch and her son John, the founder of the city whose final resting place is marked by a plain Quaker stone and a modern plaque.
The William Phaup House is a historic home located in Lynchburg, Virginia. It is a modest two story, four bay Federal style brick dwelling constructed about 1817. It is named after its architect and original occupant, William Phaup. Very few alterations have been made to the house since its construction.
The Lynchburg Courthouse is a historic courthouse building located at Lynchburg, Virginia. Built in 1855, it occupies a prominent position overlooking the steeply descending steps of Monument Terrace. The building is executed in stucco-over-brick on a granite ashlar basement and is an example of the Greek Revival. The building is capped by a shallow dome located over the intersection of the ridges. At the top of the dome is a small open belfry consisting of a circle of small Ionic columns supporting a hemispherical dome. The front of the court house has a three-bay Doric portico.
Salem Veteran Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) is one of the largest VA hospitals located at 1970 Roanoke Blvd. Salem, Virginia 24153. Since 1934 VAMC in Salem has been improving the health of the men and women who have so proudly served the United States Navy, United States Army, United States Air Force, United States Coast Guard and United States Marines. Health care services have been provided to more than 112,500 veterans living in a 26-county area of southwestern Virginia. Salem VAMC provided community-based outpatient clinics. In addition to the main facility in Salem, there are affiliated services in three community-based outpatient clinics. These clinics are located in Danville, Hillsville, Lynchburg, and Tazewell, Virginia, Wythville.11
Westend is a temple-fronted house near Trevilians, Virginia, United States. Built in 1849, the house's design refers to the Classical Revival style, representing an extension of the Jeffersonian ideal of classical architecture. The house was built for Mrs. Susan Dabney Morris Watson on a property that she had inherited from her late husband. The building project was supervised by Colonel James Magruder. The house was the centerpiece of a substantial plantation, and a number of dependencies, including slave dwellings, survive. Westend remains in the ownership of the descendants of Mrs. Watson.
Sweet Chalybeate Springs, also known as the Red Sweet Springs, Sweet Chalybeate Hotel and Sweet Chalybeate Springs Lodge, is a historic resort hotel complex located at Sweet Chalybeate, Alleghany County, Virginia. It dates to the 1850s, and consists of a main building, guest ranges, and cottages all fronted with two-level porches. There are a total of eight contributing buildings and one contributing structure. The main building is a gable roof, weatherboarded, frame structure 12 bays long and 2 bays deep. The resort developed around springs flowing undisturbed from the bottom of a small rock bluff. Sweet Chalybeate suffered decline and finally closed its doors in 1918.
Green Hill is a historic plantation house and national historic district located near Long Island, Campbell County, Virginia. The main house is a two-story, five bay, brick structure with a gable roof, modillioned cornice and two interior end chimneys. The one-story rear ell was built about 1800. The interior features fine woodwork. Also on the property are a contributing frame outbuilding with a partially enclosed shed porch, a brick duck house, an ice house, a kitchen, stone laundry, a frame slave quarters, frame kitchen with stone chimney, mounting block, two log barns, the ruins of a rather large stone stable, and a large tobacco barn.
Mayfield Cottage is a historic plantation house located near the grounds of Central State Hospital near Petersburg, Dinwiddie County, Virginia. It was built about 1750, and is a 1+1⁄2-story brick Colonial era mansion. The building features a jerkin-head roof and distinctive interior woodwork. It is believed to be the oldest existing brick house in Dinwiddie County. From 1885, the property was used by the hospital for its headquarters and the house was part of the hospital complex until 1969. The house was moved from its original site about .5 miles (0.80 km) to the southeast of the present site in 1969.
Thorn Hill is a historic home located near Lexington, Rockbridge County, Virginia. It was built in 1792, and is a two-story, five bay, brick I-house dwelling. It has a side gable roof, interior end chimneys with corbelled caps, and a two-story, one-bay wing. The front facade features a colossal tetrastyle portico with Doric order columns. The property includes the contributing log smokehouse, frame kitchen, frame servants house and loom house, and barns and farm outbuildings. Thorn Hill was the home of Col. John Bowyer, a central figure in Rockbridge County's formative years.
Stono, also known as Jordan's Point, is a historic home located at Lexington, Virginia. It was built about 1818, and is a cruciform shaped brick dwelling consisting of a two-story, three-bay, central section with one-story, two-bay, flanking wings. The front facade features a two-story Roman Doric order portico with a modillioned pediment and lunette and a gallery at second-floor level. About 1870, a 1+1⁄2-story rear wing was added connecting the main house to a formerly separate loom house. Also on the property are a contributing summer kitchen, ice house, and office.
Appomattox Iron Works is a historic iron foundry complex located at Petersburg, Virginia. The complex consists of nine buildings: the machine shop, the mill store, the supply room, the pipe shop, the carpenter's shop and pattern shop, the core room, the foundry building, the blacksmith's shop, and the ruins of a stable. The machine shop at 28 Old Street is the oldest structure in the complex. It was built between 1810 and 1825, and is a three-story, four-bay, Federal style brick building. The Appomattox Iron Works operated at this location from 1899 until 1972.
