Sikopo

Sikopo is an island in Solomon Islands; part of the Arnarvon Islands in Isabel Province. [1] [2] It lies in Manning Strait, which is between Choiseul Island and Santa Isabel Island, and which connects New Georgia Sound to the Pacific. The strait is named for Captain Edward Manning, of Pitt, who was the first European to sail through the straits and chart it in 1792.

The Battle of Blackett Strait was a naval battle of the Pacific campaign of World War II, fought on 6 March 1943 in the Blackett Strait, between Kolombangara and Arundel Island in the Solomon Islands. The battle was a chance encounter between two Japanese destroyers that had been undertaking a resupply run to Vila and a U.S. Navy force of three light cruisers and three destroyers that had been tasked with bombarding the Japanese shore facilities around Vila. The two forces clashed as the Japanese destroyers were withdrawing through the Kula Gulf. In the short battle that followed the two Japanese destroyers were sunk, after which the U.S. ships completed their bombardment of Vila before returning to their base.

<i>Fortitude</i> (1780 EIC ship)

Fortitude was a merchant vessel built in 1780 on the River Thames. A French frigate captured her in 1782 while she was on the return leg of her maiden voyage to India as an East Indiaman for the British East India Company (EIC). However, the British recaptured her in October 1782. The EIC purchased her and sent her back to England. There, in 1785, George Macartney Macauley purchased her and renamed her Pitt. She then performed five voyages for the British East India Company (EIC) between 1786 and 1798. In between, she made one journey transporting convicts from England to New South Wales. She was broken up in 1801.

The Choiseul mine is a large mine that is in development in Katupika ward on Choiseul Island in the north of Solomon Islands in Choiseul Province. Choiseul represents one of the largest nickel reserve in Solomon Islands having estimated reserves of 63.5 million tonnes of ore grading 0.7% nickel. The 62.5 million tonnes of ore contains 440,000 tonnes of nickel metal.

The Coral reefs of the Solomon Islands consists of six major islands and over 986 smaller islands, in Oceania, to the east of Papua New Guinea and northwest of Vanuatu. The Solomon Islands lie between latitudes 5° and 13°S, and longitudes 155° and 169°E. The distance between the westernmost and easternmost islands is about 1,500 km (930 mi). The Santa Cruz Islands are situated north of Vanuatu and are especially isolated at more than 200 km (120 mi) from the other islands. The Solomon Islands has the 22nd largest Exclusive Economic Zone of 1,589,477 km2 (613,701 sq mi) of the Pacific Ocean.
