Siliguri Municipal Corporation or SMC was established in the year 1994 and has been responsible for the civic infrastructure and administration of the city of Siliguri.

History

Siliguri Municipality was established in the year 1949. The first municipality office was set up in Hill Cart Road. It was a wooden construction. The first chairman of Siliguri Municipality was the then Sub Divisional Officer (SDO) Sachindra Mohan Guha. In the year 1994, Siliguri Municipality was awarded Corporation status. [1]

Area Coverage

Siliguri Municipal Corporation areas include both in Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri district. Out of 47 wards of SMC, 14 are in Jalpaiguri district. It administers an area of 41.90 km2 (16.18 sq mi). [2]

Siliguri Junction is one of the major and second largest railway station that serve the city of Siliguri located in Darjeeling district in the Indian state of West Bengal. The station has two types of gauges visible i.e. 1,676 mm broad gauge, & 610 mm narrow-gauge tracks for Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. It was opened in 1949. It formerly had the distinction of having three gauges visible but the metre-gauge line from Aluabari Road to Siliguri Junction was converted later into broad gauge. A few years ago, the trains used to run between Siliguri Junction to Naksalbari on the metre-gauge line. Siliguri Junction lies on three railway lines New Jalpaiguri–Alipurduar–Samuktala Road line, Katihar–Siliguri line and Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Line. Golakganj is a railway junction station on the Fakiragram–Dhubri branch line and the New Cooch Behar–Golakganj branch line. A new line is being laid to connect Golakganj with Jogighopa. It is located in Dhubri district in the Indian state of Assam. This station serves the Golakganj town. Important trains like Alipurduar–Silghat Town Rajya Rani Express, Siliguri–Dhubri Intercity Express are available from this station.

Sivok railway station is a junction railway station in Darjeeling district, West Bengal. Its code is SVQ. The station serves Sevoke town. The station consists of two platforms. The station lies on New Jalpaiguri–Siliguri–New Mal Junction–Hasimara–Alipurduar Junction route under Alipurduar division of Northeast Frontier Railway. It is also the originating point of the Sevoke-Rangpo Railway Line which is under construction. This railway station is a scenic railway station as it falls under Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary just ahead of Sevoke Railway Bridge over river Teesta.

The P.C. Mittal Memorial Bus Terminus is a bus terminal located on Sevoke Road, Siliguri, District Darjeeling. It is from 5.4 km (3.4 mi) from Siliguri Junction railway station and about 8.2 km (5.1 mi) from New Jalpaiguri Railway Station. Both State owned North Bengal State Transport Corporation (NBSTC) buses and private buses ply from here. Some bus routes may be shifted to this terminal to reduce traffic congestion. The Terminus is named after P.C. Mittal, a social worker and a businessman, who was a resident of the Darjeeling District.
