The Hill Arts or St. Lawrence Arts Center is a performing arts center and community space at 76 Congress Street in the Munjoy Hill district of Portland, Maine. It is located in the former parish hall of the former St. Lawrence Church, a historic Romanesque church that was built in 1897. In 2008, due to severe deterioration, the sanctuary of the former church was razed and the organization began planning to create a performance arts space where the sanctuary stood. The church property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. [1]
The Hill Arts stands northeast of the summit of Munjoy Hill, on the southeast side of Congress Street between Munjoy and Beckett Streets.
The center's facilities currently includes a 110-seat theater with state-of-the art equipment. And plans for the 400 seat theater are in the works.
The St. Lawrence Church is located in the middle of the dense, residential neighborhood of Munjoy Hill in Portland, Maine, taking up an entire city block. As were many churches before television, the St. Lawrence was the social focus of the neighborhood, hosting scout troops, Saturday matinees, public suppers and amateur theater. The building’s decline physically affected the entire neighborhood, which was also in a blighted state. The subsequent rehabilitation of the St. Lawrence Church has been accompanied by a broader, neighborhood-wide revitalization. Fundraising was challenging and donations, numbering in the thousands, have come from a community, grass-roots effort. Many of today’s patrons still come from the neighborhood and walk to performances and local activities.
The sum of the St. Lawrence Restoration Project is larger than any of its three parts – it is more than just fixing an historic building, doing work in a neighborhood or building a theater space. St. Lawrence Arts creates a mutually dependent model by which these disparate social needs and interests support each other. The arts center gives the obsolete historic landmark a constructive and economically viable use while in turn the restored structure provides an aesthetically pleasing and affordable venue perfect for artistic expression. This model is designed to be long-term and self-perpetuating. The initial capital investment in historic preservation goes on to support the arts in providing not only an affordable artistic venue, but also an income-producing asset as theater revenues currently cover a large percentage of the St. Lawrence operating expenses. This capital investment subsidizes the theater operation and makes it possible for the St. Lawrence to realistically offer the venue at affordable rates and to diverse groups of artists and performers for well into the future.
The local Congregationalists organized in the neighborhood 1854 to build St. Lawrence Chapel. Having outgrown that facility, the church was erected in 1897 to a design by New York City architect Arthur Jennings. The building was unique within the state for its combination of Richardsonian Romanesque and French Chateau elements. [2] Maintenance suffered as the congregation dwindled in later years due to increasing costs and demographic changes; the church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in an effort to help preserve it. The congregation eventually dissolved itself in 1986 and de-consecrated the building. [3]
The building stood empty until purchased in 1993 by a local resident. In 1996 she helped for the 501c3 non profit Friends of St. Lawrence Church the non-profit bought the building from the local woman for what she bought if for in 1993 The former sanctuary as demolished in 2008, and the parish hall was subsequently restored and renovated for use as a performing arts venue. The Portland Observatory is a historic maritime signal tower at 138 Congress Street in the Munjoy Hill section of Portland, Maine. Built in 1807, it is the only known surviving tower of its type in the United States. Using both a telescope and signal flags, two-way communication between ship and shore was possible several hours before an incoming vessel reached the docks. The tower was designated a National Historic Landmark and a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 2006; it is now managed by Greater Portland Landmarks, a local historic preservation nonprofit. It is open to the public as a museum.
Munjoy Hill is a neighborhood and prominent geographical feature of Portland, Maine. It is located east of downtown and south of East Deering. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the neighborhood had a large Irish and Italian American population.

The former Nast Trinity United Methodist Church, now known as The Warehouse Church, is a historic congregation of the United Methodist Church in Cincinnati, Ohio, United States. Designed by leading Cincinnati architect Samuel Hannaford and completed in 1880, it was the home of the first German Methodist church to be established anywhere in the world, and it was declared a historic site in the late twentieth century.
The Abyssinian Meeting House is a historic church building at 73–75 Newbury Street, in the Munjoy Hill neighborhood of Portland, Maine. Built 1828-1831 by free African-Americans, it is Maine's oldest African-American church building, and the third oldest in the nation. Throughout the years, the Abyssinian was a place for worship and revivals, abolition and temperance meetings, speakers and concerts, the Female Benevolent Society, the Portland Union Anti-Slavery Society and negro conventions, and the black school in Portland from the mid-1840s through the mid-1850s. The building is the only Underground Railroad site in Maine recognized by the National Park Service. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.
The Maltz Performing Arts Center, officially the Milton and Tamar Maltz Performing Arts Center, is a 1200-seat historic arts and religious venue on the campus of Case Western Reserve University, located at 1855 Ansel Road, in Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States. The center is contained within the Temple–Tifereth Israel synagogue building, located at Silver Park, on the border between the suburbs of Hough and University Circle.

St. David Catholic Church is a historic church at 774 Main Street in Madawaska, Maine. Built in 1911, it is an architecturally distinctive blend of Baroque revival and Italian Renaissance revival architecture. The congregation was the first separate Roman Catholic congregation established in Madawaska, the result of many years' struggle, after the international border divided the French Catholic community here in 1842. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
The former Chestnut Street Methodist Church is an historic church building at 15 Chestnut Street in Portland, Maine. Built in 1856, it is rare in the city as an early example of Gothic Revival architecture, and is one of the few surviving works of Charles A. Alexander, a popular architect of the period. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. It now houses an event venue.
The Green Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church is a historic church at 46 Sheridan Street in Portland, Maine, United States. It is a 2+1⁄2-story structure of textured concrete block masonry built in 1914 to house the congregation founded in 1891. The church is named after founder Moses Samuel Green, who was the city's wealthiest African American at the time. In the middle of the 20th century, the church was the focal point of the Portland's African American community. It hosted social events and was used to organize for civil rights advancements in Maine and across the United States.
The First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, also known as the New Old South Congregational Church, is a historic church at 235 Main Street in Farmington, Maine. The congregation's present sanctuary is a brick Romanesque structure designed by George M. Coombs and was completed in 1887. It is the town's finest 19th-century church, and one of the most architecturally sophisticated in the region. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. The congregation, established in 1814, celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2014.
The Former First Baptist Church is a historic church building at 37 Main Street in Skowhegan, Maine. Built in 1842-44, this Greek Revival brick building is one of the few works attributable to a local master builder, Joseph Bigelow. It was used as a church until 1919, after which it was used as a community center, and then a VFW hall until 2009. It is vacant, with plans to establish a performance and meeting venue; it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

Congress Street is the main street in Portland, Maine. Around 5.77 miles (9.29 km) long, it stretches from County Road, Portland's southwestern border with Westbrook, through a number of neighborhoods, before ending overlooking the Eastern Promenade on Munjoy Hill. In March 2009, the Portland City Council designated much of the inner portion of Congress Street a historic district. The western section of the street includes the city's Arts District.
Mount Pisgah Lutheran Church, also known in its early years as the First Lutheran Church and First English Lutheran Church, was located at 701 North Pennsylvania Street in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana. The historic church was built by the city's first Lutheran congregation, which organized in 1837, and was its third house of worship. The former church building was subsequently operated as a for-profit event venue under the name The Sanctuary on Penn until it was destroyed by a fire on December 24, 2024.
St. Dominic's Church is an historic Catholic church building in Portland, Maine, located at the corner of Gray Street and State Street. When it was dedicated on August 11, 1833, it became the first Roman Catholic church in the city and the third in the state. Parishioners generally resided in the historically Irish neighborhoods of Gorham's Corner, Munjoy Hill (Portland) and Knightville. Prior to the closing of the parish in 1997, it had been at one time one of the largest Irish-American Catholic parishes north of Boston. In 2003, the building was transferred to the newly formed Maine Irish Heritage Center.
