Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is an upcoming action role-playing game developed by Arcanaut Studios and published by Lucasfilm Games. It is a spiritual successor to the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic series. The story is set during the Old Republic era in the Star Wars universe, with the player controlling a Force user. [1] The game is scheduled to release for Windows and unspecified consoles.
Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is being developed by Arcanaut Studios, which was founded in July 2025. [2] Arcanaut is led by co-founder and game director Casey Hudson, who previously worked on the original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (2003) and the Mass Effect trilogy (2007—2012) alongside other Arcanaut developers. [3] [4] The studio also comprises former employees from companies such as Microsoft, Epic Games, Remedy Entertainment, The Coalition, and ZeniMax Media. [5]
Hudson had remained in contact with Lucasfilm since working on the original game, noting that Fate of the Old Republic was "a huge commitment for everyone involved, so it took the right conditions to get everything to line up". [6] The studio considers the game a spiritual successor rather than a direct sequel or continuation of the Knights of the Old Republic series, aiming to "[honor] that legacy" by creating a similar narrative-focused and decision-based role-playing game. [7] Hudson stated that the developers seek to "explore a contemporary vision" of the Star Wars universe, featuring new characters and a new story. [8] [9] The game is set during the Old Republic era, a period the team views as "a vast open canvas" allowing them to approach the project "without having to navigate storytelling touchstones from other media" while maintaining the franchise's core identity. [10] Fate of the Old Republic is being developed using Unreal Engine 5. [11]
Fate of the Old Republic was announced with a teaser trailer during the Game Awards in December 2025. [12] It is scheduled to release for Windows and unspecified consoles. [13]
