Sweden was present at the Eurovision Song Contest 1999, held in Jerusalem.
Sweden did not compete in the Eurovision Song Contest 1970, as a protest against that four countries shared the victory the preceding year. They were, however, back for the 1971 contest. Five semi-finals, with the same three competitors in all of them, were held in the popular TV show Hylands hörna. The group Family Four won all of the semi-finals, and therefore sung all the songs in the final. The song "Vita vidder", written and composed by Håkan Elmquist, won and represented Sweden at ESC, held in Dublin.
Sweden selected their entry for ESC 1977 in the show "Melodifestivalen 1977". The winner was the song "Beatles" by a group called Forbes. It was a tribute to the rock band The Beatles, who had split up some years earlier, and was written by Sven-Olof Bagge and Claes Bure.
Sweden selected their representative for the Eurovision Song Contest 1979 in a show called Melodifestivalen 1979. The winner was the popular pop singer Ted Gärdestad with the song "Satellit", which he composed, while the lyrics were by his brother, Kenneth Gärdestad.
Sweden chose their entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 1981 in the national selection Melodifestivalen 1981. After a tight race, the winner was a song called "Fångad i en dröm", which was performed by Björn Skifs. Björn was also the Swedish representative in the 1978 contest, and had written the song together with Bengt Palmers.
Sweden used a national preselction called Melodifestivalen 1983 to select an entry for the 28th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest. Winner, being the first participant ever to get maximum points from all of the eleven juries, was the 17-year-old and then unknown Carola Häggkvist, who quickly went on to be one of Sweden's most popular singers. The song she competed with was called "Främling". It was written by Lasse Holm and Monica Forsberg, who had also written the previous winning song together.
In order to choose an entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 1988, Sweden held a national selection, namely Melodifestivalen 1988. The runaway winner was the ballad "Stad i ljus" sung by Tommy Körberg, who also had represented Sweden at the 1969 contest. This time his song was written by Py Bäckman. It was the first time in the eighties that the Swedish entry was a ballad.
Sweden chose their song and singer for the Eurovision Song Contest 1989 in the national preselection Melodifestivalen 1989. With a small marginal, the winner was Tommy Nilsson with the power ballad "En dag", written by Tim Norell, Ola Håkansson and Alexander Bard.
Sweden entered the Eurovision Song Contest 1990, held in Zagreb, Yugoslavia.
Sweden entered and won the Eurovision Song Contest 1991, held in Rome, Italy.
After Carola Häggkvist's win in the 1991 contest, Sweden was the host of the Eurovision Song Contest 1992, held in Malmö. Sveriges Television, the Swedish broadcaster, continued to use the Melodifestivalen format to select their entry.
Sweden entered the Eurovision Song Contest 1993, held in Millstreet, Ireland.
Sweden's entry to the Eurovision Song Contest 1995, held in Dublin, Ireland, was Jan Johansen with the song "Se på mig".
Sweden was represented by One More Time with the song "Den vilda" in the Eurovision Song Contest 1996.
Sweden was represented by Blond in the Eurovision Song Contest 1997 with the song "Bara hon älskar mig".
Sweden was present at the Eurovision Song Contest 1998, held in Birmingham, the United Kingdom.
Sweden was the host of the Eurovision Song Contest 2000 thanks to Charlotte Nilsson's victory the previous year. Sveriges Television chose to hold the contest in Sweden's capital, Stockholm. They were represented by Roger Pontare with the song "When Spirits Are Calling My Name".
Sweden was represented by the group Friends in the Eurovision Song Contest 2001 with schlager song "Lyssna till ditt hjärta". It was written by Thomas G:son and Henrik Sethson.
Sweden participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2013 in Kyiv, Ukraine. The Swedish entry was selected through Lilla Melodifestivalen 2013 which consisted of eight songs. The final was held on 6 June 2013 at the Gröna Lund amusement park in Stockholm. Eliias and his song "Det är dit vi ska" was chosen as the winner.
Sweden participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 with the song "If I Were Sorry" written by Oscar Fogelström, Michael Saxell, Fredrik Andersson and Frans Jeppsson Wall. The song was performed by Frans. In addition to participating in the contest, the Swedish broadcaster Sveriges Television (SVT) also hosted the Eurovision Song Contest after winning the competition in 2015 with the song "Heroes" performed by Måns Zelmerlöw. SVT organised the national final Melodifestivalen 2016 in order to select the Swedish entry for the 2016 contest in Stockholm. After a six-week-long competition consisting of four heats, a Second Chance round and a final, "If I Were Sorry" performed by Frans emerged as the winner after achieving the highest score following the combination of votes from eleven international jury groups and a public vote.
