The Conservative Party, officially the Conservative and Unionist Party, is a centre-right political party in the United Kingdom. Presently led by Theresa May, it has been the governing party since 2010. It presently has 314 Members of Parliament in the House of Commons, 249 members of the House of Lords, and 18 members of the European Parliament. It also has 31 Members of the Scottish Parliament, 12 members of the Welsh Assembly, eight members of the London Assembly and 9,008 local councillors. One of the major parties of UK politics, it has formed the government on 45 occasions, more than any other party.
The Liberal Democrats are a liberal, centrist political party in the United Kingdom. They presently have 11 Members of Parliament in the House of Commons, 96 members of the House of Lords, and one member of the European Parliament. They also have five Members of the Scottish Parliament and a member each in the Welsh Assembly and London Assembly. The party reached the height of its influence in the early 2010s, forming a junior partner in a coalition government from 2010 to 2015. It is presently led by Vince Cable.
14 of the seats on the council were up for election, with both the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats contesting every seat. [3] 3 Conservative councillors stood down at the election, Eric Morgan from Limpsfield ward, Matthew Groves from Queens Park ward and Ros Langham from Westway ward. [3] Meanwhile, in Burstow, Horne and Outwood ward, the sitting Conservative councillor, Peter Brown, stood as an independent after being deselected and in Whyteleafe Sakina Bradbury defended the seat for the Conservatives after defecting from the Liberal Democrats in 2008. [3] Other parties standing at the election included the UK Independence Party, Labour party with 8 candidates and the Green Party with 2 candidates. [3]

Limpsfield is a village and civil parish in the east of the county of Surrey, England, by Oxted at the foot of the North Downs. The town Oxted merges with the village's westernmost area, Oxted railway station being within 300m of the residential East Hill in the village and under a mile from Limpsfield's conservation area High Street. The English composer Frederick Delius and orchestral conductor Sir Thomas Beecham are both buried in the village churchyard and there are 89 listed buildings.
Burstow is a village and civil parish in the Tandridge district of Surrey, England. Its largest settlement is Smallfield. Smallfield is 2.5 miles (4.0 km) ENE of Gatwick Airport and the M23 motorway, 7.5 miles (12.1 km) southwest of Oxted and 1.8 miles (2.9 km) east of Horley. Crawley is a nearby large commercial town, 3.7 miles (6.0 km) southwest of Burstow and 5 miles (8.0 km) southwest of Smallfield. Towards the outside of the London commuter belt, some residents commute to the capital by road or rail from here as London is 24.5 miles (39.4 km) to the north or Horley railway station is accessible.
The Conservatives remained in control of the council after holding 13 of the 14 seats contested to have 33 seats on the council. [4] No seats changed hands with the Conservatives holding Westway by 29 votes, Queens Park by 37 votes and Whyteleafe by 151 votes. [5] The Conservatives also comfortably held Burstow, Horne and Outwood, despite the challenge from the independent candidate and outgoing Conservative councillor Peter Brown. [5] Meanwhile, the Liberal Democrats won the only seat not held by the Conservatives in Warlingham East, Chelsham and Farleigh by 71 votes to remain on 8 councillors. It is located in the North Downs AONB and the Metropolitan Green Belt, 4.5 miles (7.2 km) south east of Croydon, 13.4 miles (21.6 km) south of London and 25 miles (40 km) WNE of Surrey's county town, Guildford.

East Surrey is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2010 by Sam Gyimah of the Conservative Party.
