The Green Bus [1] is a bus company based in Birmingham operating services in the West Midlands.
The origins of Green Bus can be traced to 2001 when King Edward VI Five Ways School, Birmingham commenced operating a bus service to transport its students. In September 2005, it became a separate company. [2] It soon began operating services serving other schools within the Foundation of the Schools of King Edward VI. By 2013 it was operating 55 school bus services in Berkshire, Merseyside, Surrey, the West Midlands and Worcestershire. [3]
In August 2010 it began operating services during Aston Villa and Birmingham football clubs' home matches. In September 2011 The Green Bus commenced operating commercial passenger services.
The Green Bus won the "Innovation of the Year" prize at the 2010 Route One Operator Excellence Awards in recognition of its iPhone application which allows users to track the real-time location of their bus. [4]
Note: should not be confused with Warstones Motors t/a Green Bus Service, the Great Wyrley based bus company which had its licence revoked in 2009 or Green Bus of Rugeley which was acquired by Midland Red in 1974.
The Green Bus operated routes 50 and 50A from Birmingham to Maypole and Redditch until December 2014. [5] It operates services to Birmingham and West Bromwich Albion football clubs during home matches. [6]
The Green Bus commenced operation of route 22 on 3 March 2014, which served Birmingham Town Hall, Harborne, Bartley Green, Halesowen, Colley Gate and Merry Hill, which ended in the summer of the same year.
As of the 2020-21 academic year, The Green Bus operates 33 school services to 10 schools in the West Midlands, with one return journey on each route per day. [7]
The Green Bus also operate one normal service route. Since August 2020 The Green Bus have been operating route 242 from intu Merry Hill to Kinver via Stourbridge. This was cut back to run between only Stourbridge and Kinver from September 2020. During August 2020 The Green Bus also operated a 582 shopper service from Wolverhampton to Kidderminster on Saturday's. [8]
As of September 2020, the fleet consisted of 53 buses:
17 Dennis Trident 2s (Alexander ALX400 & Plaxton President bodied examples). However, 101 (PO51 WNF) and 121 (V21 TGB) are reported as withdrawn.
32 Volvo B7TLs (Plaxton President & Wright Eclipse Gemini bodied examples). However, V423 MOA is used for spares, 395 (V95 MOA) is reported as withdrawn and 409-415 are reported to have not arrived from Lothian Buses yet but are due shortly.

The Green Bus are also reported to own ex Midland Red Leyland National HHA 101L which is preserved by the company.
In 2013, Green Bus took Centro, the combined West Midlands Integrated Transport Authority and the West Midlands Passenger Transport Executive, to court to try and lift the limit on subsidies for school transport. [9] Justice Duncan Ouseley at the High Court ruled that the £320 cap per pupil should not be lifted. [10]
West Midlands Metro is a light-rail/tram system in the county of West Midlands, England. Opened on 30 May 1999, it consists of a single route, Line 1, which operates between the cities of Birmingham and Wolverhampton via the towns of West Bromwich and Wednesbury, running on a mixture of reopened disused railway line and on-street running in urban areas. The line originally terminated at Birmingham Snow Hill station, but with extensions opened in 2015 and 2019, now runs into Birmingham City Centre to terminate at Library in Centenary Square, with a further extension to Edgbaston due to open in 2021.
West Midlands bus route 11, also known as the Birmingham Outer Circle, is a 27-mile (43 km) route that circumnavigates Birmingham via the A4040 apart from a small deviation via the B4182 and A4030 in Bearwood. It is mainly operated by National Express West Midlands with a few journeys operated by Discount Travel and by Social Travel. It operates in both clockwise and anti-clockwise directions as routes 11C and 11A.
Metrobus is a bus operator with routes in parts of Surrey, Kent, Sussex, and Greater London. Formed through a management buyout in 1983, Metrobus was purchased by the Go-Ahead Group in September 1999.
Stagecoach West is the trading name of Cheltenham & Gloucester Omnibus Company Limited, a bus operator providing services in Gloucestershire, Bristol, Wiltshire, Somerset and Herefordshire, in the west of England. The company is a subsidiary of Stagecoach Group.
The Birmingham to Worcester via Kidderminster line is a suburban railway line from Birmingham Snow Hill to Worcester via Stourbridge and Kidderminster. It is one of the Snow Hill Lines, with trains operated by West Midlands Trains and Chiltern Railways using a variety of rolling stock including Class 172 and Class 168 diesel units. It is a future aspiration of Network Rail to electrify the entire line, as well as the Chiltern Main Line to London Marylebone.
First Greater Manchester is a bus operator in Greater Manchester. It is a subsidiary of FirstGroup. It was once a major operator in the northern areas of the county competing against Stagecoach Manchester which was dominant in southern areas of the county; however in recent years it has massively scaled back its operations. It now primarily serves north eastern suburbs of Manchester, and the metropolitan boroughs of Oldham and Rochdale whilst Diamond North West and Go North West have bought up some of the company's previous depots.

First Eastern Counties, trading as First Norfolk & Suffolk, is a bus operator providing services in Norfolk and Suffolk in eastern England. It is a subsidiary of FirstGroup.
The Blackburn Bus Company is a bus operator, running services in the boroughs of Blackburn, Hyndburn and the Ribble Valley. It is a subsidiary of Transdev Blazefield. Commencing in July 2016, the business is progressively being rebranded from Lancashire United.

Probus Management was a bus company in the West Midlands which was acquired by the Go-Ahead Group in March 2006.
London Midland was a train operating company in England, owned by Govia, which operated the West Midlands franchise between 2007 and 2017.
National Express West Midlands (NXWM) is a bus operator in the West Midlands that operates services in Birmingham, Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton. It is a subsidiary of National Express.
South Gloucestershire Bus & Coach Company Ltd was a bus and coach operator operating school bus services under contract to Bristol City Council and South Gloucestershire Council and coach services under contract to Megabus.
The Oxford to London coach route is an express coach route between Oxford and London along the M40 motorway. The Oxford Tube, which is operated by Stagecoach in Oxfordshire, runs up to five coaches an hour via Lewknor, Hillingdon and Shepherd's Bush terminates on Buckingham Palace Road, Victoria. The X90, which was operated by the Oxford Bus Company, used to run up to two coaches an hour via Baker Street and terminate on Buckingham Palace Road. The X90 service was withdrawn in January 2020, with the reasons stated being reducing passenger numbers, traffic congestion, and competition from railway services.
Birmingham bus route 50 operates in Birmingham, England. It operates from Central Birmingham to Druids Heath via Moseley, Kings Heath and Maypole along Alcester Road, it is one of the busiest bus routes in Europe. Route 50 was introduced in 1949 and is currently served by National Express West Midlands and Diamond West Midlands.
Midland, previously known as Choice Travel, was a bus company operating mostly in the Wolverhampton area of the West Midlands. Some services also operated in the Staffordshire area.
Megabus is a long distance coach operator operated by the Stagecoach Group. It commenced operating in August 2003, initially in the United Kingdom, and later expanding into continental Europe. Some services link with Megatrain services, also operated by Stagecoach. Fares use a yield management model, formerly starting at £1. In June 2016, Stagecoach Group sold all operations in the European mainland, as well as those services linking London with Europe, to German competitor Flixbus. Megabus serves as a contractor, so the sale resulted in no route changes for passengers. Domestic UK operations remain under the control of Stagecoach.
Bus transport in Bromsgrove has a long and varied history, dating back to Midland Red operations. In recent years, however, First Midland Red, which has evolved from the original Midland Red company, has severely reduced operations, leaving many independent operators running in the town.
West Midlands Trains (WMT) is a train operating company in the United Kingdom. It operates passenger trains on the West Midlands franchise between London and the English Midlands under two trade names: West Midlands Railway (WMR) and London Northwestern Railway (LNR).
