Chronology

The tenth season of the American reality talent show The Voice premiered on February 29, 2016 on NBC. [1] Carson Daly returned as the show's host. Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, and Pharrell Williams all returned as coaches, while Christina Aguilera returned after a one-season hiatus. Gwen Stefani did not return as a coach for this season, but was the advisor for Team Blake in the Battle Rounds.

Reality television genre of television programming that documents unscripted situations and actual occurrences

Reality television is a genre of television programming that documents purportedly unscripted real-life situations, often starring unknown individuals rather than professional actors. Reality television came to prominence in the late 1990s and early 2000s with the global successes of the series Survivor, Idols, and Big Brother, all of which became global franchises. Reality television shows tend to be interspersed with "confessionals", short interview segments in which cast members reflect on or provide context for the events being depicted on-screen. Competition-based reality shows typically feature gradual elimination of participants, either by a panel of judges or by the viewership of the show.

Talent show event, television or radio program that focuses on the potential audition of singers, dancers, models and the like

A talent show is an event in which participants perform the arts of singing, dancing, lip-syncing, acting, martial arts, playing an instrument, or other activities to showcase skills. Many talent shows are performances rather than contests, but some are actual contests. In the instance of a contest, participants may be motivated to perform for a reward, trophy, or prize of some kind. For example, a high school might not have many students with any interest in performing in front of the student body for the sole purpose of performing alone and may offer different prizes as an incentive for these students to participate in the contest.

The Voice (U.S. TV series) American talent competition series

The Voice is an American singing competition television series broadcast on NBC. It premiered during the spring television cycle on April 26, 2011, and expanded into the fall cycle with the premiere of the third season on September 10, 2012. Based on the original The Voice of Holland, it has aired fifteen seasons and aims to find currently unsigned singing talent contested by aspiring singers, age 13 or over, drawn from public auditions.

Contents

Alisan Porter was announced as the winner of the season, and Christina Aguilera became the winning coach and the first female coach to win The Voice. [2]

Alisan Porter American singer, actress and dancer

Alisan Leigh Porter is an American singer, actress and dancer. As a child, Porter made acting appearances in Parenthood, Stella and I Love You to Death. Her breakout role came in 1991, when she played the lead in the film Curly Sue opposite Jim Belushi.

Coaches and hosts

Adam Levine and Blake Shelton returned for their tenth season as coaches. Pharrell Williams returned for his fourth season and Christina Aguilera returned for her sixth season, after a season's hiatus. [3] The advisor for this season was next season's coach Miley Cyrus, who served as an advisor for all teams during the Knockouts. [4]

Adam Levine American singer-songwriter

Adam Noah Levine is an American singer-songwriter and actor. He is the lead singer for the pop rock band Maroon 5. Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, Levine began his musical career in 1994, when he co-founded the band Kara's Flowers, of which he was the lead vocalist and guitarist. The band split up after their only album, The Fourth World, which did not gain popularity. In 2001, the group was reformed – with guitarist James Valentine joining the line-up – and began a new musical chapter, changing their name to Maroon 5. In 2002, the band released their first album, Songs About Jane, which went multi-platinum in the US. Since then, they have released five more albums: It Won't Be Soon Before Long (2007), Hands All Over (2010), Overexposed (2012), V (2014), and Red Pill Blues (2017). As part of Maroon 5, Levine has received three Grammy Awards, three American Music Awards, four Billboard Music Awards, an MTV Video Music Award, and a World Music Award.

Blake Shelton American country music singer and television personality

Blake Tollison Shelton is an American country singer, songwriter and television personality. In 2001, he made his debut with the single "Austin". The lead-off single from his self-titled debut album, "Austin" spent five weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. The now Platinum-certified debut album also produced two more top 20 entries. Although the album was released on Giant Records Nashville, he was transferred to Warner Bros. Records Nashville after Giant closed in late 2001.

Pharrell Williams American singer, rapper and record producer from Virginia

Pharrell Lanscilo Williams is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer, entrepreneur, and fashion designer. Williams and Chad Hugo comprise the record production duo The Neptunes, producing hip hop and R&B music. He is the lead vocalist of the band N*E*R*D, that he formed with Hugo and childhood friend, Shay Haley. He released his first solo single, "Frontin'", in 2003 and followed up with his debut solo album, In My Mind, in 2006. His second album, Girl, was released in March 2014 and included the commercially successful single, "Happy". As part of the Neptunes, Williams has produced numerous singles for various recording artists.

This week, the three artists with the most votes made it straight to the finals, the two artists with the fewest votes were instantly eliminated and the middle three fought for the remaining spot in the finals via Instant Save. iTunes bonus multipliers were awarded to Adam Wakefield (#2), Alisan Porter (#3), Hannah Huston (#5), Mary Sarah (#6), Bryan Bautista (#7) and Laith Al-Saadi (#10). [11] In addition to their individual songs, each artist performed a duet with another artist in the competition, though these duets were not available for purchase on iTunes. All four coaches had an artist advance to the finals for the first time ever since season 2 and season 1, which was team-based rather than individual, thus making season 10 the first in The Voice history to achieve this feat organically.

Controversy and criticism

The show faced controversy when Katherine Ho, a contestant on Team Adam, was the second contestant in the history of the show to make it to the third round of the competition and have all of her performances, including her Blind Audition, Battle, and Knockout round, montaged (not shown in full).

According to Matt Carter, "It’s not often that we write an article on 'The Voice' that is about a contestant being triple-montaged, mostly because it is such a rare phenomenon, but here we are with it happening to Katherine Ho. When it a triple-montage does happen, it just makes it all the more frustrating since it eliminates the purpose of the show. We know that there is no guarantee that you are going to get airtime when you audition for the show, but we do think for the most part you should get a little more attention than Katherine Ho got over the course of the competition. Her Battle Round performance of Caroline Burns was not really shown, and this puts her in a similar camp with Rebekah Samarin back in season 7 of the show. They made it far enough on the show that they cannot audition again, and yet they don’t really get a lot of publicity – it’s pretty unfair.

Here’s the most egregious thing about this performance tonight: We don’t even know what Katherine sang! She just didn’t get any attention at all." [42]
