The 2007 Wychavon District Council election took place on 3 May 2007 to elect members of Wychavon District Council in Worcestershire, England. The whole council was up for election and the Conservative party stayed in overall control of the council. [1]
Wychavon is a local government district in Worcestershire, England. Its council is based in the town of Pershore, and the other towns in the district are Droitwich Spa and Evesham. The district extends from the south-east corner of Worcestershire north and west. It borders all the other districts of Worcestershire, as well as the counties of Gloucestershire and Warwickshire.
Non-metropolitan districts, or colloquially "shire districts", are a type of local government district in England. As created, they are sub-divisions of non-metropolitan counties in a two-tier arrangement.
Worcestershire is a county in the West Midlands of England. Between 1974 and 1998, it was merged with the neighbouring county of Herefordshire as Hereford and Worcester.
Before the election the Conservatives controlled the council with 31 councillors, compared to 12 for the Liberal Democrats and 2 for Labour. [2] A total of 96 candidates stood for election including the first UK Independence Party candidate for Wychavon District Council in Evesham South, however the Conservative leader of the council, Martin Jennings was among those who stood down from the council at the election. [2] [3] One seat in Pinvin had no election in 2007 as the Liberal Democrat councillor Liz Tucker was re-elected without opposition. [2]
A Councillor is a member of a local government council.
The Liberal Democrats are a liberal, centrist political party in the United Kingdom. They presently have 11 Members of Parliament in the House of Commons, 96 members of the House of Lords, and one member of the European Parliament. They also have five Members of the Scottish Parliament and a member each in the Welsh Assembly and London Assembly. The party reached the height of its influence in the early 2010s, forming a junior partner in a coalition government from 2010 to 2015. It is presently led by Vince Cable.
The Labour Party is a centre-left political party in the United Kingdom which has been described as an alliance of social democrats, democratic socialists and trade unionists. The party's platform emphasises greater state intervention, social justice and strengthening workers' rights. Labour is a full member of the Party of European Socialists and Progressive Alliance, and holds observer status in the Socialist International. As of 2017, the party was considered the "largest party in Western Europe" in terms of party membership, with more than half a million members.
The Conservatives increased their majority on the council by four seats to have 35 of the 45 councillors on the council. [4] This came at the expense of Labour, who lost their only two seats on the council in Droitwich West to the Conservatives, and the Liberal Democrats who had a net loss of two seats to finish with 10 councillors. [4] Overall turnout at the election was 42.42%, an increase from 37.94% at the 2003 election. [4] [5]
Droitwich Spa is a town in northern Worcestershire, England, on the River Salwarpe. It is located approximately 22 miles (35 km) south of Birmingham and 12 miles (19 km) west of Redditch.
Voter turnout is the percentage of eligible voters who cast a ballot in an election. Eligibility varies by country, and the voting-eligible population should not be confused with the total adult population. Age and citizenship status are often among the criteria used to determine eligibility, but some countries further restrict eligibility based on sex, race, or religion.
Apart from the gains from Labour in Droitwich West, Conservative gains included taking seats from the Liberal Democrats in Honeybourne and Pebworth, Badsey and Little Hampton. [6] However the Liberal Democrats did also gain seats in Droitwich South West and The Littletons from the Conservatives, with Alan Anderson taking The Littletons with a five-vote majority over independent Richard Lasota. [4] [6]
Honeybourne is a village and civil parish about 5 miles (8 km) east of Evesham in Worcestershire, England. Much of the parish is farmland. RAF Honeybourne just south of the village was operational from 1940 until 1947.
Pebworth is a village and civil parish in the county of Worcestershire, lying about 8 km north-north-west of the town of Chipping Campden in Gloucestershire. Until 1931, the parish – which includes the hamlet of Broad Marston – was itself also in Gloucestershire, as part of Pebworth Rural District. Pebworth is bordered to the north and north-east by the parishes of Dorsington and Long Marston, which are today in Warwickshire.
Badsey is a village and civil parish in the Wychavon district of Worcestershire, England. It has two parks and a small first school located in the centre of the village.
