Caused by the death on 24 December 1896 of Alderman George Clay (Liberal Unionist, elected as an alderman by the council on 15 February 1893). [3] [4]

In his place, Councillor James Wilson Southern (Liberal, St. Luke's, elected 1 November 1884; previously 1877-83) [5] was elected as an alderman by the council on 6 January 1897. [6]
