Elections to Manchester City Council were held on Thursday, 2 May 1996. One third of the council was up for election, with each successful candidate to serve a four-year term of office, expiring in 2000. There were also two vacancies being contested; one in Blackley and the other in Woodhouse Park. The Labour Party retained overall control of the Council. [1]

Trafford is a metropolitan borough of Greater Manchester, England, with an estimated population of 235,493 in 2017. It covers 41 square miles (106 km2) and includes the area of Old Trafford and the towns of Altrincham, Stretford, Urmston, Partington and Sale. The borough was formed in 1974 as a merger of six former districts and part of a seventh. The River Mersey flows through the borough, separating North Trafford from South Trafford, and the historic counties of Lancashire and Cheshire. Trafford is the fifth-most populous district in Greater Manchester.

The borough is named after its main settlement, Salford and extends its coverage to the towns of Eccles, Swinton, Walkden and Pendlebury. The borough had a population of 270,000, and is administered from the Salford Civic Centre in Swinton.
Charlestown is a ward in the suburban north of the city of Manchester, England. The population of the ward at the 2011 census was 14,332. Voters from this ward elect three councillors to Manchester City Council.
The Metropolitan Borough of Stockport is a metropolitan borough of Greater Manchester in North West England, south-east of central Manchester. As well as the towns of Stockport, Bredbury and Marple, it includes the outlying areas of Hazel Grove, Bramhall, Cheadle, Cheadle Hulme, Gatley, Reddish, Woodley and Romiley. In 2021, it had a population of 294,800. The borough is third-most populous of Greater Manchester.

The Independent Labour candidates stood as Labour Peace 2000. Overall turnout was 20.5%, with Labour retaining control of the council.
