†: Peter Elliott from the United Kingdom fell after having been pushed by East German Hauke Fuhlbrügge and did not finish the race. The East German was disqualified. During his career, he won the gold medal in the 1500 metres at the 1990 Commonwealth Games, the silver medal in the 1500 metres at the 1988 Olympic Games, and the silver medal in the 800 metres at the 1987 World Championships.
Jens-Peter Herold is a retired German middle-distance runner who participated in several international championships in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
