A moment magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck Doti District, Sudurpashchim Province, Nepal on 9 November 2022. [4] The earthquake was widely felt in western Nepal and northern India.

Tectonic setting

Nepal lies in the Himalayas, which were created as a result of the Indian Plate colliding with the Eurasian Plate, forming the Main Himalayan Thrust.

Earthquakes are common in Nepal. In 1934, a magnitude 8.0 earthquake struck Sagarmatha, killing over 10,700 in Nepal and in Bihar, India. A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck eastern Nepal in 1988, killing over 700. In 2015, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake killed over 8,900 in central Nepal, many in the capital Kathmandu.

Earthquake

The earthquake was felt by over 42.1 million people across Nepal, India and China. [5] The earthquake occurred as a result of reverse faulting. It was felt as far away as the Indian capital of New Delhi, approximately 400 km (250 mi) away. [6]

Impact

Nepal

Six people, including four minors were killed, [7] all of whom died when a house collapsed in Doti District. [8] Twelve others were injured, five of them seriously, 924 houses collapsed and 5,186 others were damaged. [9] [10] [11] [12]

India

In the city of Rudrapur in the state of Uttarakhand, a young woman was injured while fleeing in panic. In the village of Bhanti in Almora district, cracks appeared in several houses. [13] [14] In Shravasti district, in Uttar Pradesh, the quake caused cracks to appear in the floors of a house. Cracks also appeared in several old houses in Bhinga, where power outages occurred. [15]

At 8:12 p.m. local time, the largest aftershock of Mww 5.2 struck near the Bajhang District. Additional damage to previously weakened houses was caused there, [16] and a 66-year old person in the neighboring district of Baitadi died while fleeing his home in panic. [17]

The headquarter Chainpur is situated at the bank of Seti River and Bauli Khola. Bitthad Bazar is bordered with Baitadi District which is the place of Bitthad Kalika and Kedar. This place was famous for fresh milk and yogurt.

Dipayal Silgadhi is a municipality and the district headquarters of Doti District in Sudurpashchim Province of Nepal. At the time of the 2011 Nepal census it had a population of 32,941 people living in 7,447 individual households.

The 1988 Nepal earthquake occurred in Nepal near the Indian border and affected much of northern Bihar. The magnitude 6.9 earthquake shook the region on August 21, killing at least 709 persons and injuring thousands. The earthquake struck in two installments of 10 seconds and 15 seconds each and left cracks in 50,000 buildings, including Raj Bhavan and the old Secretariat Building in Patna, Bihar.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Sudurpashchim Province</span> Province of Nepal

Sudurpashchim Province is one of the seven provinces established by the new constitution of Nepal which was adopted on 20 September 2015. It borders the Tibet Autonomous Region of China to the north, Karnali Province and Lumbini Province to the east, and the India's Uttarakhand to the west and Uttar Pradesh to the south. The province covers an area of 19,539 km2, or about 13.22% of the country's total area. Initially known as Province No. 7, the newly elected Provincial Assembly adopted Sudurpashchim Province as the permanent name for the province in September 2018. As per a 28 September 2018 Assembly voting, the city of Godawari has been declared the capital of the Province, But till now Dhangadhi serves as the temporary capital. The province is coterminous with the former Far-Western Development Region, Nepal. The three major cities in terms of population and economy are Dhangadhi, Bhimdutta (Mahendranagar), and Tikapur.

Sudurpashchim Pradesh is a province of Nepal located in westernmost part of Nepal. It is surrounded by Tibet of China in Northwest, Uttrakhand of India in West, Uttar Pradesh of India in South, Karnali Province in East and North. Lumbini Province touches it in South. Godawari is the capital city of the province.

The 1980 Nepal earthquake devastated the Nepal–India border region on the evening of July 29. The epicenter of the 6.6 Mw earthquake was located in Nepal, northwest of Khaptad National Park. At least 200 people died and 5,600 were injured in the disaster. Extensive damage occurred on both sides of the border, amounting to 245 million USD.

Dargah Bade Purush Baba Dikauli Sharif or Bade Purush Dargah is a Dargah (shrine) located at Dikauli village in Shravasti district of Uttar Pradesh, near Bahraich. It is the dargah of Hazrat Ameer Nasrullah or Nasrullah Shah or Hazrat Saiyyad Nasrullah Gaazi or Mir Nasrullah, who is famously known as Bade Purush or Bade Purukh and Budhwa Baba. Bade Purush is revered by both the Muslims and Hindus.

Diggi village is located in Malpura tehsil of Tonk district, Rajasthan, India.

On 21 March 2023, a magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck Badakhshan Province, Afghanistan, with an intermediate depth of approximately 187 km (116 mi). The epicenter of the earthquake was 40 km (25 mi) south-southeast of Jurm.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Akharharghat</span> Village in Bihar

Akharharghat is a village and a local tourist place located at Sahar North panchayat in Mithila region of Madhubani district in Bihar. The village is situated on the bank of three local rivers Dhauns, Yamuni and Bhiggi. There is a junction of these river streams. The junction of these river streams is a religious place for the local Hindu pilgrimage called as Jamuni Sangam. Hindu pilgrimage took bath in the holy water at the Jamuni Sangam on the festival Makarsankranti and Bhai Duj. There is a Hindu temple of Lord Shiva known as Shree Trilokinath Mahadev Mandir. The temple is known for organising a locally famous fair known as Jamuni Mela. Akharharghat is also an Indo-Nepal border which covers three kilometer border from pillar number 830 to 93 in Brahmapuri village. Nepali APF, SSB, Thana Police Force have joint regular patrolling along the Indo-Nepal border. The village is on the trial of the International border line between India and Nepal. This village turns into an island in raining seasons. The village is connected to the Indo-Nepal border connecting road National Highway number 104 by an approach road at the Saharghat village of Madhwapur block. The village is only 3 kms distance from the headquarter of the Madhwapur block in Madhubani district of Bihar. There is a destroyed wooden bridge in the village built during the British rule to connect the village with the nearest market village Saharghat. Local BJP leader and MLC Ghanshyam Thakur raised the issue of the destroyed wood bridge in the session of Legislative Council of Bihar state in India.

On September 5, 2011, Raju Pargai and Amit Arya were killed at the Nepal border of Uttarakhand. The Uttarakhand police arrested Lucky Bisht in connection with the killings.

Neelam Giri is an Indian actress. She mainly works in Bhojpuri films and television serials. She made her on-screen debut with Babul (2021) directed by Awdhesh Mishra and her performance was praised by critics. Her notable works are Babul (2021), Ijjat Ghar (2022), Tun Tun (2022) and Kalakand (2022).

A moment magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck Jajarkot District, Karnali Province, Nepal, at 23:47 NPT on 3 November 2023, killing 157 people and injuring at least 375. The earthquake was widely felt in western Nepal and northern India, and is the deadliest to strike the country since 2015.
