The year 2026 in Indian sports describes the events that will happen in the year 2026. The main highlights for this year are: the 2026 Men's T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, and the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan respectively.
The 2026 edition will be the 20th appearance made by the Indian contingent at the 2026 Asian Games, which will held in Aichi and Nagoya, Japan, from 19 September to 4 October 2026. [1]
India secured its first-ever surfing quotas as both men's team and women's team qualfied for the surfing competitions in the 2026 Games during the 2024 Asian Surfing Championships. [2] India again secured two quotas from the Asian Surfing Championships 2025, which was held in Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu during August 2025 and bagged the maximum four quotas for the Games. [3]
India will host the 30th edition of the BWF World Championships from TBA to TBA in Indira Gandhi Arena, New Delhi. [4] India was originally scheduled to host the Sudirman Cup in 2023. However, due to all events in China being cancelled in 2021, the Sudirman Cup was relocated to Vantaa, Finland, with the 2023 Sudirman Cup being held in Suzhou, China. India was thereby selected as the host of the 2026 World Championships, after previously hosting the tournament back in 2009. [5]
The World Chess Championship 2026 will be a chess match to determine who will hold the World Chess Champion position. It will be played between the defending champion Gukesh Dommaraju [6] and a challenger, who will be the winner of the Candidates Tournament 2026. [7]
The FIDE Women's Candidates Tournament 2026 will be an eight-player chess tournament held to determine the challenger for the Women's World Chess Championship 2026. [8] Divya Deshmukh and Koneru Humpy qualified for the tournament as the winner and runner-up of the Women's Chess World Cup 2025 respectively. [9] [10]
India will enter as the defending champions [11] as well as the co-host (along with Sri Lanka) in the 2026 edition of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup between February to March 2026. [12] It will be India's 10th appearance in the tournament.
The Indian women's team will participate in the 2026 Women's T20 World Cup, scheduled to be hosted by England between 12 June to 5 July 2026. [13] [14]

The New Zealand cricket team is scheduled to tour India in January 2026 to play the Indian cricket team. [15] The tour will consist of three One Day International (ODI) and five Twenty20 Internationals (T20I) matches. India will compete at the 2026 Men's FIH Hockey World Cup, held from 14 to 30 August 2026 in Wavre, Belgium and Amstelveen, Netherlands. India qualified for the tournament as the winners of the 2025 Men's Hockey Asia Cup. [30]
