In certain Christian denominations, holy orders are the ordained ministries of bishop, priest (presbyter), and deacon, and the sacrament or rite by which candidates are ordained to those orders. Churches recognizing these orders include the Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Anglican, Assyrian, Old Catholic, Independent Catholic and some Lutheran churches. Except for Lutherans and some Anglicans, these churches regard ordination as a sacrament.
The Antiochian Catholic Church in America (ACCA) is an Independent Catholic Church. What sets the ACCA apart from the majority of independent Catholic jurisdictions is that it espouses the theology and embraces many distinctive practices of the Syriac Orthodox Church and the Indian Orthodox Church, from which the clergy of the ACCA claim to derive apostolic succession primarily via the lineage of René Vilatte. The orders of the ACCA are also derived from the Old Catholic movement, in this case by way of Arnold Mathew. The ACCA, however, is not in communion with any of the Oriental Orthodox Churches. It ordains women to the diaconate and does not require celibacy of its bishops, allowing them, like priests and deacons, to marry.

From September 12, 2004, to his election as Metropolitan in 2014, Joseph Al Zehlaoui was the bishop of the Holy Diocese of Los Angeles and the West for the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America. Metropolitan Joseph was asked to resign by Patriarch John in connection with allegations of clerical misconduct, prior to a meeting with the Patriarch. It was reported that he did not receivd any retirement offers, payments or any restitution for the upkeep of the rectory. His resignation was effective immediately, and on September 23, 2022, Patriarch John X (Yazigi) announced his replacement with a temporary operating committee until a new Metropolitan Archbishop of America was elected. Then On Feb. 23, 2023, John X and the Holy Synod of Antioch elected Metropolitan SABA Isper to lead the Archdiocese during its extraordinary session on Feb. 23, 2023, in Balamand, Lebanon.
