Athletics at the 2015 European Games took place at the Baku National Stadium and on the streets of Baku, Azerbaijan.
The main athletics programme in the National Stadium was a combined European Games and 2015 European Team Championships Third League competition. It is the lowest league of the Team Championships, with 17 teams from smaller European athletics nations, including Azerbaijan.
600 athletes in total[ citation needed ] – competed over two days for points in 20 men's and women's track and field events. Points were to be combined to produce national team totals, and games medals awarded to the top three nations. Medals are not awarded for individual events. The top four nations also win promotion from the Third League of the European Team Championships to the Second League. [1]
As required by the European Team Championship format, both genders compete in the non-Olympic 3000m event, while Olympic events longer than 5000m, and combined events, are not held. [2] Athletics at the European Games offers possible qualification standards for the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics.
A second non-medal athletics competition was held as a series of demonstration events on the streets of Baku in a Great City Games format. Events include the high jump and pole vault, and 24 athletes were scheduled to compete. [3] Plans to include street running races were reportedly cancelled. [4]
Athletics was not included in the earliest list of sports confirmed for the 2015 Games, as the European Athletics authorities at that stage were minded not to take part. However, following negotiations with the organising authorities, a compromise was reached in February 2014 between the organisers and European Athletics to hold the two sets of competitions. The agreement was confirmed by Pat Hickey, president of the European Olympic Committees in February 2015. [5]

Azerbaijan's Chaltu Beji – the winner of the women's steeplechase event – was disqualified after her in-competition drug test came back positive for the banned substance ostarine. [7]
Azerbaijan's Dzmitry Marshin was suspended for four years after he failed a drug test. This subsequent doping disqualification led to changes in final standings. Austria received an additional point and overhauled Slovakia. [8] [9]
In 2022 Elisabeth Niedereder of Austria had all her results since May 2015 annulled by World Athletics and Austria were docked 11 points meaning that the gold medal reverted back to Slovakia after 7 years [10]
The European Athletics Championships is a biennial athletics event organised by the European Athletic Association and is recognised as the elite continental outdoor athletics championships for Europe.
Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill is a British retired athlete, specialising in the heptathlon and 100 metres hurdles. As a competitor in heptathlon, she is the 2012 Olympic champion, a three-time world champion, and the 2010 European champion. She is also the 2010 World Indoor pentathlon champion. A member of the City of Sheffield & Dearne athletic club, she is a former British national record holder for the heptathlon. She is also a former British record holder in the 100 metres hurdles, the high jump and the indoor pentathlon.
The 2010 European Athletics Championships were the 20th edition of the European Athletics Championships, organised under the supervision of the European Athletic Association. They were held at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain from 27 July to 1 August 2010. Barcelona was the first Spanish city to host the European Championships.

It has also hosted the first European Games and 2017 Islamic Solidarity Games.
Italy competed at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics, held from August 15 to August 23. On August 3, the Italian national athletics federation (FIDAL) revealed the final team composed of 40 athletes, but on 8 August, after a last test competition in Grosseto, Andrew Howe, in accordance with FIDAL, decided not to compete in Berlin. Just before publishing the team, Faloci, a discus thrower, also decided not to compete.

The 1st European Games, also known as the 2015 European Games or Baku 2015, were the inaugural edition of the European Games, an international multi-sport event for athletes representing the National Olympic Committees (NOCs) of the European Olympic Committees. It took place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 12 to 28 June 2015, and featured almost 6,000 athletes from 50 countries competing in 30 sports, including 15 summer Olympic and 2 non-Olympic sports.
The 2012 IPC Athletics European Championships was a track and field competition for athletes with a disability open to International Paralympic Committee (IPC) affiliated countries within Europe. It was held in Stadskanaal, Netherlands and lasted from 23 to 28 June. The event was held in the Stadskanaal Stadium and was the last major European disability athletics event before the forthcoming 2012 Summer Paralympics in London. Approximately 550 athletes from 38 countries attended the games. Several countries used the Championships to finalise the remaining places for the Paralympics.

Russian Federation participated at the I European Games, which took place in Baku, Azerbaijan from 12 to 28 June 2015. Russia sent athletes for every sport except athletics, as the level of Russian athletes was too high, according to Russia's Minister of Sports Vitaly Mutko. Russia still had the largest team at the Games, with the athletics programme consisting of only one event. Russia finished in the first place on the medal rankings, winning 79 gold medals.

The 2017 European Athletics Indoor Championships were held between 3 and 5 March 2017 at the Kombank Arena in Belgrade, Serbia. This was the second time this event was held in the city after the 1969 edition then known as the European Indoor Games, and the first time in more than 30 years that the competition was held in Eastern Europe. The three-day competition featured 13 men's and 13 women's athletics events and took place over two morning and three afternoon sessions.
Ukraine competed at the 2019 European Games, in Minsk, Belarus from 21 to 30 June 2019 and won 52 medals, including 16 golds. Ukrainian athletes competed in all 15 sports included in the programm. Ukraine's team was third biggest team at the Games. Ukraine has previously competed at the 2015 European Games in Baku, Azerbaijan, where it won 46 medals, including eight golds.
