Rossendale is a district with borough status in Lancashire, England, holding a number of small former mill towns centred on the valley of the River Irwell in the industrial North West. Rossendale combines modest size urban development with rural villages and is immediately south of Burnley, east of Blackburn and north of Bolton, Bury, Manchester and Rochdale, centred 15 miles (24 km) north of Manchester.
Haslingden is a town in Rossendale, Lancashire, England. It is 19 miles (31 km) north of Manchester. The name means 'valley of the hazels' or 'valley growing with hazels'. At the time of the 2011 census the town had a population of 15,969. The town is surrounded by high moorland; 370 m (1215 ft) to the north; 396 m (1300 ft) Cribden to the east; 418 m (1372 ft) Bull Hill to the south.
The Lancashire League is a competitive league of local cricket clubs drawn from the small to middle-sized mill towns, mainly but not exclusively, of East Lancashire. Its real importance is probably due to its history of employing professional players of international standing to play in the League.
Ian David Austin is a retired English first-class cricketer. He made his first-class debut for Lancashire County Cricket Club in 1987 and remained with that county for his entire career, scoring 3,778 runs at 27.98 and taking 262 wickets at 30.35 with his medium-pace seamers in his 124 matches.
Brenton Anthony Parchment is a West Indian cricketer. Born in St Elizabeth, Jamaica, he was the West Indies Under-19 captain to England in 2001. This team was the only West Indies Under-19 team to beat England at home. In 2003, the Jamaican cricketer was given the award for Most Disciplined Student at the West Indies Cricket Academy.
Graham David Lloyd is a former English cricketer who played for Lancashire County Cricket Club (1988-2002) and in six One Day Internationals for England between 1996 and 1998. His final List A cricket appearance was for Cumberland County Cricket Club in 2003 against Scotland, a match in which he scored 123 runs.

Ambrose Causer Williams, better known as Billy Williams, was an English first-class cricketer who played twelve matches for Yorkshire County Cricket Club between 1911 and 1919. He played in the Lancashire League for Haslingden C.C. in 1920 and 1921, and for the Yorkshire Second XI from 1911 to 1919.
East Lancashire Cricket Club is a cricket club in the Lancashire League, which plays its home games at Alexandra Meadows in Blackburn. For the 2015 season its captain was Mark Bolton and its professional was Juan de Villiers. The club has been very successful, winning the League on 14 occasions, the Worsley Cup on 18, the Inter League Club Challenge Trophy twice in its ten-year history, and has won a greater percentage of its games than any other club. It has employed professionals including Fazal Mahmood, Allan Border and Paul Reiffel.

For the 2014 season its captain is former Burnley defender Alex Coleman, and its professional is Burton De Wett The club has won the league on 12 occasions and the cup on 5. It has employed professionals including George Headley, Clive Lloyd and Dennis Lillee. Another notable professional was West Indian opening batsman Phil Simmons. Ian Austin went on to have a successful career with Lancashire and England. Played for Haslingden as both an amateur and professional having started his career at Haslingden as a junior.

Haslingden F.C. was a football club based in Rossendale, Lancashire. In 1994, they won the North West Counties Football League Division Two. Haslingden played at Ewood Bridge, later used by Stand Athletic and were members of the North West Counties League between 1993 and 1998. Although Division Two Champions in their first season Haslingden were not promoted until finishing runners up in 1997. They completed just one season in the top flight, finishing 16/22 before financial difficulties signalled the end of the line for the club based adjacent to the East Lancashire Railway. The Ewood Bridge ground forlorn and overgrown is still extant today.

Among his published works are a biography of James Hargreaves, inventor of the spinning jenny, and The First Industrial Society: Social History of Lancashire, 1750–1850, a study of the social aspects of the industrial revolution. Aspin has had a lifelong interest in local history and the history of the Lancashire textile industry in particular.
