Later research has shown the date of the oldest part of the house to be 1704, built by John Cresse. The "newer" portion of the house was built by Robert Morris Holmes, son of John Holmes, in 1830.

Bowers with the building of an iron foundry. The Bowerstown Historic District, encompassing the village, was listed on the state and national registers of historic places in 1996.
