The Cachar Express was a daily Indian Railways metre-gauge overnight express train from Lumding Junction (nearest broad-gauge rail link of Silchar) to Silchar (second largest city of Assam) and vice versa, both stations are situated in the Indian state of Assam. The train was numbered as 15691 and 15692 respectively. The train service is suspended now as the route in which it used to run is now converted from metre gauge to broad gauge.

Information

Originally, these trains ran between Guwahati (capital of the state Assam) and Silchar but after conversion of metre-gauge line of Guwahati–Lumding to broad gauge, the originating and ending station of these train had changed. This train was the first option for the passengers, who were willing to travel by train between Silchar and Guwahati, as it was an overnight train. [1] There was another train on that section, the Barak Valley Express; although this latter train was named Express, it used to run with a status of passenger train in its last days.

Cachar Express used to depart Lumding as 15691 at 20:15 and from Silchar as 15692 at 19:15. The train used to cover a distance of 212 km in 12 hours in its up and down journey with an average moving speed of 18 km/h.

The train was hauled by the YDM-4 class of Lumding metre-gauge diesel loco shed locomotive. 15692 used to be connected with two locos, one in front and another in the rear for pulling and pushing its way to the height of Barail Range, from Harangajao to Jatinga. The important halts of Cachar Express were Badarpur Junction, Lower Haflong, Maibang, Old Harangajao, Jatinga Haflong Hill, Arunachal Junction and Katakhal Junction. It had a length of 11 coaches with all non-AC accommodation; SL (6) GN (3) SLR (2). [2]

The train used to pass through 36 tunnels in Barail Range made during the British era. Now this entire route is converted to broad gauge. The broad-gauge predecessor for this train is the 15944 Barak–Brahmaputra Express.

Silchar - Guwahati Express is an Express train belonging to Northeast Frontier Railway zone of Indian Railways that connects the second largest city & largest city of Assam, Silchar and Guwahati. This train is a replacement of previous train, Silchar - Guwahati Passenger Special, for the same route & on the same timings. The train makes its main halt at Badarpur Junction & Lumding Junction for 10 mins and 15 mins respectively & loco/rake reversals also take place at these Stations. The train runs with SGUJ/WDP-4 & NGC/WDM-3A/Twins.

Agartala – Lumding Express was a daily overnight train of Indian Railways. It was the only overnight MG express train from Tripura to Assam, connecting Tripura's capital city Agartala and Lumding. It was the longest overnight MG train journey in this section. The train service is suspended now as the route in which it used to run is now converted to BG from MG. This train was the only option for the passengers of Tripura and Karimganj, who were willing to travel by train to Lumding. It used to depart from Agartala as 15696 at 16:15 and from Lumding Junction as 15695 at 21:30. The train makes its main halt at Karimganj Junction for 25 mins on both sides & loco/rake reversals also takes place here. The train was hauled by the YDM-4 class of Lumding MG diesel loco shed locomotive. 15696 used to be connected with two locos, one in front and another in the rear for pulling and pushing its way to the height of Barail Range, from Harangajao to Jatinga. Silchar- Coimbatore Superfast Express is an Express train of the Indian Railways belonging to Northeast Frontier Railway connecting Silchar in Assam and Coimbatore Junction in Tamil Nadu. It is currently being operated with 12516/12515 train numbers on once in week basis. The train passes through Assam, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. The train starts from Silchar at 20:10 on Tuesday and reaches Coimbatore Junction at 12:00 on Friday. During its journey the train travels through major cities like Guwahati, Siliguri, Malda, Kolkata, Kharagpur, Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, Rajahmundry, Vijayawada, Chennai, Vellore, Salem, Erode and Coimbatore. It holds the record of 7th Longest running train of Indian Railways that covers 3492 km. .
