Clarkfield is a city in Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, United States, surrounded by Friendship Township. The population was 852 at the 2020 census. [4]
Clarkfield was platted in 1884, and named for one Mr. Clark, a railroad agent. [5] A post office has been in operation at Clarkfield since 1884. [6] Clarkfield was incorporated in 1887. [5]
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.09 square miles (2.82 km2), all land. [7]
U.S. Highway 59 and Minnesota State Highway 67 are two of the main routes in the city.
The mayor of Clarkfield is Darrin Johnson. The city council includes Kevin Kaatz, Josh Hanson, Paul Anspach and Craig Giles.

There were 424 housing units at an average density of 389.0 per square mile (150.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.6% White, 0.2% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.1% Asian, 3.0% from other races, and 0.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.0% of the population.
There were 372 households, of which 25.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.5% were married couples living together, 5.9% had a female householder with no husband present, 6.7% had a male householder with no wife present, and 43.8% were non-families. 38.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 21.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.19 and the average family size was 2.89.
The median age in the city was 43.4 years. 22.5% of residents were under the age of 18; 6.9% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 22.1% were from 25 to 44; 23.6% were from 45 to 64; and 24.9% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 49.1% male and 50.9% female.
