A cozy game is a video game genre that emphasizes non-violence and relaxation. Initially derived from the life simulation genre, cozy games commonly include activities such as gathering and growing plants and nurturing other characters. They often have open-ended goals that encourage self-expression.
While developers have suggested the style may have appeared in games as early as Little Computer People (1985) and The Sims (2000), it became a more common term following the release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons (2020), with dozens of games using it as part of their marketing.
Colin Campbell of GamesIndustry.biz described cozy games as video games that generally have players functioning in "activities such as farming, gathering, growing and nurturing" and generally assisting other characters through non-violent acts. Campbell summarized that the core of the games was self-expression, that progression goals are generally open-ended, and that, unlike other game genres that apply gameplay mechanics such as first-person shooter or turn-based strategy, they are generally defined by their impact on the player's feelings. According to CNN 's Carli Velocci, cozy games are "a broad genre that encompasses a lot of types of games, from farming sims to city builders, but they all elicit a special feeling that can be hard to explain". [2] Similarly, Wired 's Louryn Strampe described the genre as "meant to evoke feelings of warmth, comfort, and peace". [3] The vague definition has led to disagreement and confusion among fans of the genre regarding what games qualify as "cozy". [4]
Campbell found that cozy games often feature cute characters such as anthropomorphic animals or child-like humans. Non-playable characters (NPCs) who are disagreeable are often played for comic effect. [1] Alternatively, Jess Rutland of Game Developer suggested that cozy games involved satisfying but not overly challenging gameplay, complementary colors, and mindful music. [5] Campbell suggested in 2022 that cozy games were aiming to move beyond "gather and grow" themed gameplays, citing A Short Hike (2019) as an example. [1] Rutland stated that cozy games were the most accessible genre to people who did not consider themselves to be gamers and are easier for smaller independent developers to create. [5]
Some developers suggested the style evolved from the life simulation game, which originated with games like Little Computer People (1985), Harvest Moon (1996), The Sims (2000), and Boku no Natsuyasumi (2000). [1] [5] [6] Vice suggested in 2018 that "coziness could ... be one of the most significant game design trends of recent years", noting its hybrid of escapism and the ability to appeal to players not seeking action-oriented gameplay. [7]
The release of Nintendo's Animal Crossing: New Horizons (2020) during the COVID-19 lockdowns led to the increased popularity of cozy games; Campbell found only "a handful" of the "dozens" of games described as "cozy" on digital distributor Steam were released before 2020. [1] Alexandre Stroukoff, one of the founders of Alblune who created the game The Spirit and the Mouse, said in 2022 that "People get depressed, and they need to relax. This has always existed in gaming, but it was a less marketable idea in the past. Now, we recognize that it's an important part of playing games." [1] Additionally, the release of Tiny Glade in September 2024, a diorama builder, has brought city-builder games into the cozy genre. That game received over 800k wishlists before it was released. Merchandise from cozy games such as Animal Crossing expanded beyond selling from dedicated websites, to being connected with brands such as LEGO, Puma and Build-A-Bear. [5]
In 2023, the first official line of The Sims merchandise was released to an overwhelming response which led to nearly all items selling out in less than a day. Rutland noted the influence of the cozy aesthetic inspired by the games in social media. This included the #CozyDeskSetup hashtag's annual usage doubling in March 2024. These setups echoed elements from the games such as calming lighting, pastel, or muted tone furniture and accessories from popular cozy video games franchises. [5]
Real-time strategy (RTS) is a subgenre of strategy video games that does not progress incrementally in turns, but allow all players to play simultaneously, in "real time." By contrast, in turn-based strategy (TBS) games, players take turns to play. The term "real-time strategy" was coined by Brett Sperry to market Dune II in the early 1990s.
A city-building game, or town-building game, is a genre of simulation video game where players act as the overall planner and leader of a city or town, looking down on it from above, and being responsible for its growth and management strategy. Players choose building placement and city management features such as salaries and work priorities, and the city develops accordingly.
Social simulation games are a subgenre of life simulation game that explore social interactions between multiple artificial lives. Some examples include The Sims and Animal Crossing series.
The Sims 4 is a social simulation game developed by Maxis and published by Electronic Arts. The game was released on September 2, 2014 for Windows, and is the fourth main installment in The Sims series, following The Sims 3 (2009). As with previous games in the series, The Sims 4 allows players to create and customize characters called "Sims", build and furnish their homes, and simulate their daily life across various in-game regions. This installment introduced a newly developed custom game engine, with enhanced character creation and house-building tools, along with a more complex in-game simulation.
An immersive sim (simulation) is a video game genre that emphasizes player choice. Its core, defining trait is the use of simulated systems that respond to a variety of player actions which, combined with a comparatively broad array of player abilities, allow the game to support varied and creative solutions to problems, as well as emergent gameplay beyond what has been explicitly designed by the developer. This definition is not to be confused with game systems which allow player choice in a confined sense or systems which allow players to easily escape consequences of their choices.
Surviving Mars is a city building survival video game initially developed by the Bulgarian studio Haemimont Games, and later by Abstraction Games, and published by Paradox Interactive. It was released on Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on March 15, 2018. The player serves as an overseer who must build a colony on Mars and ensure the survival of the colonists. A spiritual successor, Surviving the Aftermath, was released in 2021.
My Time at Portia is a 2019 farm life sim role-playing video game developed by Chinese studio Pathea Games and published by Team17. It was released on 15 January 2019 for Windows and the release on the Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Android, iOS and macOS followed suit. It has some similarities to other farm sims such as Stardew Valley. A sequel, My Time at Sandrock entered early access in 26 May 2022 and was fully released in 2 November 2023.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a social simulation game developed and published by Nintendo in 2020 for the Nintendo Switch; it is the fifth main entry in the Animal Crossing series. In New Horizons, the player controls a character who moves to a deserted island after purchasing a getaway package from Tom Nook, accomplishes assigned tasks, and develops the island as they choose. They can gather and craft items, customize the island, and develop it into a community of anthropomorphic animals.
The Stillness of the Wind is a farming simulation game developed by Coyan Cardenas and published by Fellow Traveler. An indie game released on February 7, 2019, The Stillness of the Wind focuses on Talma, an elderly goat farmer who tends her isolated farm as messages from the city where her family has moved become darker and darker. The game's thematic focus on aging and loss is a marked contrast from other games in the cozy genre. Reception to the game was generally positive.
World War 3 is a free-to-play first-person shooter developed and published by Wishlist Games in collaboration with The 4 Winds Entertainment for Microsoft Windows. World War 3 is solely multiplayer and does not feature a single-player campaign. It features real-world locations of Warsaw, Berlin, Moscow, Smolensk, Polyarny, the Gobi Desert, Tokyo, the Korean DMZ, and Istanbul; the locations have been extensively revamped since the early access release on October 19, 2018. The full version followed on December 10, 2022. On December 14, 2023, Wishlist Games acquired the rights to develop World War 3 from The Farm 51, becoming the next lead development studio for the game.
Disney Dreamlight Valley is a 2023 life simulation adventure game developed by Gameloft Montreal and published by Gameloft. The game has players tend to a magical valley populated by various Disney and Pixar characters who previously underwent a curse that caused them to lose their memories of their lives in the valley.

Mineko's Night Market is a 2023 business simulation video game developed by Meowza Games and published by Humble Games for Windows and Switch. Players control a young girl tasked with revitalizing a local market.
Coral Island is a 2023 farm life sim developed by Stairway Games and published by Humble Games. Its gameplay takes place on a tropical island and contains features similar to other farm sims such as Stardew Valley. The game was a huge success on Kickstarter, reaching its initial goal within 36 hours. The game entered early access in October 2022 before fully releasing November the next year.
Manor Lords is a medieval city-builder and real-time tactics video game developed by Greg Styczeń from Slavic Magic and published by Hooded Horse. The most anticipated game on Steam upon release, with over three million wishlists, it released into early access on 26 April 2024.

Fields of Mistria is an upcoming farm life simulation role-playing video game developed and published by NPC Studio. It was released in early access on Windows on August 5, 2024. In the indie game, the player resides in the fictional town of Mistria, which is recovering from an earthquake and socializes with its villagers of diverse backgrounds. The game features conventional aspects of farm life games as well as combat and magic.
