Cringe pop

Cringe pop is a broad "genre" of pop music, which is written intentionally to be cringeworthy. [1] [2] It encompasses songs and music videos that are essentially awkward in nature. [2] This awkwardness is intentionally produced for the purpose of gaining attention from people and going viral. [3]

History

Cringe pop has spread due to the advancement of technology, essentially allowing anyone with a laptop to be able to produce a song and a music video. [4] The rise of social media and streaming sites, especially YouTube have provided a platform for cringe-pop writers to publish their work and these platforms are fundamental for their existence. [5]

While the origins of cringe pop are unknown, an Indian magazine credited Rebecca Black's song "Friday" as giving birth to the genre. [6] [7] [8] The song, which was released in 2011, has over 149.6 million views and 3.8 million dislikes on YouTube as of January 2021. [9]

Black was soon followed by Taher Shah, a Pakistani singer. His music video "Angel" went viral. [10] His first music video, "Eye to Eye", was released in 2013, and "Angel" was released in 2016. [11]

Examples

Jacintha Morris, an Indian civil servant, released "Is Suzainn the Sinner" in 2016, which was labelled a cringe pop song. [12] Morris herself denied that the song was intended to be cringe pop. [13]

Other examples include "Aunty Ki Ghanti" by Indian rapper Omprakash Mishra released in 2015 [14] and "PPAP (Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen)" by Japanese comedian Pikotaro, and the "Pokémon Go Song" by Czech child singer Misha/Mishovy Silenosti, both released in 2016. [15]

Tony Kakkar, an Indian singer and composer, is often called out for cringe-worthy lyrics. [16] [17]

Reception

Such songs are described as being "so bad, that you can't stop watching them". [1] [18] [10]

Loosely based on the Hollywood film Into the Blue (2005) and its sequel Into the Blue 2: The Reef (2009), Blue failed to recover its high budget from the box office.

Delhi-6 is a 2009 Indian Hindi-language drama film directed by Rakesh Omprakash Mehra. The film stars Abhishek Bachchan as an NRI who arrives in India with his ailing grandmother and begins discovering his roots before getting embroiled in a religious dispute involving a mysterious monkey-like attacker. The film co-stars Sonam Kapoor, Aditi Rao Hydari, Rishi Kapoor, Supriya Pathak, Atul Kulkarni, Pavan Malhotra, Deepak Dobriyal, Divya Dutta, Vijay Raaz and Om Puri. It marks the Hindi film debut of Rao Hydari. The number 6 refers to the Postal Index Number (PIN) of the Chandni Chowk area of Old Delhi, a shortened form of 110006. It is Mehra's third film after Aks (2001) and Rang De Basanti (2006). The film's soundtrack, composed by A. R. Rahman, was a commercial success and received positive reviews from music critics upon release.

"Eye to Eye" is a 2013 song and music video written, produced by and starring Pakistani singer-songwriter Taher Shah. It was released in April 2013 and aired on various music channels in Pakistan and on YouTube. In June 2013 the song became popular on social media.

"PPAP (Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen)" is a single by Pikotaro, a fictional singer-songwriter created and portrayed by Japanese comedian Daimaou Kosaka. It was released as a music video on YouTube on 25 August 2016, and has since become a viral video. As of January 2024, the official video has been viewed more than 160 million times. PPAP spawned parodies, and was hailed as the new "Gangnam Style" by various newspapers and online media. The single itself reached number 1 on the Billboard Japan Hot 100 chart. At the time of its release, it became the shortest single to chart on the Billboard Hot 100, a record that was later broken by Kid Cudi's "Beautiful Trip" (0:37). At the end of 2016, the song charted at number 6 on Japan Hot 100 Year-end Chart.

Kazuhito Kosaka, better known by his stage names Daimaou Kosaka and Pikotaro, is a Japanese comedian, television personality and entertainer. Kosaka insists that Pikotaro is another personality promoted by him, but they are considered the same person. He is currently signed with Avex Management Inc. under Avex Group.

Vennu Mallesh is an Indian singer from Achampet, Telangana who is best known for his songs on YouTube.

Pooja Jain, better known as Dhinchak Pooja, is an Indian YouTuber. She was a contestant on the reality show Bigg Boss in 2017, and is often considered as the queen of cringe pop.

"Dilbar" is a Hindi language originally released as part of the soundtrack for the 1999 film Sirf Tum. The songs was originally composed by Nadeem-Shravan and sung by Alka Yagnik, with lyrics by Sameer. The song's original music video features Sushmita Sen and Sanjay Kapoor. The Sirf Tum soundtrack album sold 2.2 million units, and was the ninth best-selling Bollywood music album of 1999.

Tony Kakkar is an Indian singer known for his pop songs. Kakkar made his debut in Bollywood in 2012, as a music director with the film Mr. Bhatti on Chutti, for which he composed the song "Good Boys Bad Boys". He is the brother of singers Sonu Kakkar and Neha Kakkar. In 2014, he founded Desi Music Factory, a record label along with Anshul Garg.

Toofaan (transl. Storm) is an 2021 Indian Hindi-language sports drama film directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra. It stars Farhan Akhtar, Paresh Rawal, Mrunal Thakur and Hussain Dalal. In the film, Aziz Ali is an orphaned extortionist in Dongri who beats up shopkeepers for money. He gets into a fight and goes to a hospital, where the doctor, Ananya Prabhu criticizes him for being an extortionist and orders him out.
