Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev

Brings Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev to Brazil to perform with the Ballet do Rio de Janeiro, at the Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro.

Fonteyn and Nureyev were at the height of their fame and their presence in Brazil was instrumental in increasing the prestige of ballet in the country.

Popular performance at Maracanãzinho with the participation of a corps de ballet made up of 90 figures, of which 24 scholarships from the Associação de Ballet do Rio de Janeiro.

It is the first time in the world that a classical ballet performance is presented in a stadium.

1968

Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro

Invited to be Director of the corps de ballet of the Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro.

Produces Os Inconfidentes by Cecília Meirelles with music by Chico Buarque and direction by Flávio Rangel. With the participation of Chico Buarque, Nara Leão, Dina Sfat, Paulo José and Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro's choir and orchestra.

Brings the English choreographer Norman Thompson to stage Cinderella for the corps de ballet.

Ballet Brasileiro da Bahia

Six years after the founding of EBATECA, the Ballet Brasileiro da Bahia was created.

Ballet Dance for Indira

At the request of Itamaraty (The Ministry of Foreign Affairs), she created a ballet in honor of the visit of Mrs. Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi, to Brazil. The show was presented at the Palácio dos Arcos, in Brasília, with the Ballet Brasileiro da Bahia.

Ballet in Education

Launch of the Ballet in Education program of the Royal Academy of Dance in London, establishing a special and unprecedented agreement in the country, with ballet schools throughout Brazil for teacher refresher courses, within the most expressive world methods.

Invited by Marcia Haydée to the choreography competition in Stuttgart, she creates Pas de Trois, which is classified in 2nd place.

1970

Sponsorship the visit to Brazil of professors from the Royal Academy of Dance.

Subsidises the arrival of professionals from the Royal Academy of Dance to carry out teacher training courses. Classes are taught throughout Brazil and aim to implement a teaching methodology in line with international standards. This initiative is extremely relevant in the training and improvement of teachers and schools that start to follow a teaching method that is a world reference.

Foundation of the Centro de Arte e Cultura Ballet Dalal Achcar

With Maria Luisa Noronha, she founded the Centro de Arte e Cultura Ballet Dalal Achcar, a school that teaches ballet to children and professionals. Offers guidance and technical and artistic training to teachers and a social inclusion program through scholarships.

Jornal Dança

Creation of Jornal Dança, the first newspaper dedicated to dance in Brazil in partnership with Márcia Kubitschek.

A newspaper for promoting dance education in Brazil, distributed free of charge to 6,000 establishments in universities, music conservatories, theater schools, government and state agencies and private cultural entities throughout the country.

The Jornal Dança is in the Washington Library archive in the United States.

Shows in public squares

Presents, with Ballet do Rio de Janeiro and students from Ballet Dalal Achcar, a series of shows in public squares, starting a new approach to artistic shows for the general public.

1973

Royal Ballet of London

Promotes, in partnership with Dante Viggiani and Marcia Kubitschek for the first time in Brazil, a visit of the Royal Ballet of London - at the time the most internationally renowned company - with the participation of Margot Fonteyn offering Brazilian dancers a reference of international excellence.

It was considered the most important artistic event in the country. Over six weeks, the company performed in Rio, São Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Porto Alegre and Brasília, where it inaugurated the Medici Stadium. Almost 100,000 people attended the shows.

1974

Associação de Ballet do Rio de Janeiro

Considered of Federal Public Utility by Decree 73,481 of January 16, 1974.

Technical courses

With the reform of high school education, Dalal proposes and approves the recognition of the profession through the first professional training course for the training of the following professionals: Assistant Professor of Dances, Assistant Professor of Brazilian traditional Folk Dances, Choreographic Recreation for Children and Adolescents, Technician in Psychomotor Recovery and Therapy through Dance.

Ballet Dalal Achcar was the first school authorized to adopt the course.

Through the Associação de Ballet do Rio de Janeiro, Dalal grants 104 scholarships for teaching dance, a curriculum encompassing everything from classical ballet to jazz dance.

Ópera de Paris Ballet

Promotes a great season for the Ópera de Paris Ballet, which, similar to that of the Royal Ballet, achieved absolute success. The season brought to Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo complete ballets never seen in Brazil such as Notre Dame de Paris and The Rite of Spring. It was the first international tour with the full company.

Creation and production of her choreography for The Nutcracker

Creates and produces her conception and choreography for The Nutcracker, by Tchaikowsky.

Performed at the Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro by the Ballet do Rio de Janeiro with musical direction by Henrique Morelembaum and participation of great first dancers of international ballet: Doreen Wells and Georgina Parkinson (Royal Ballet of London), Cyril Atanassoff (Ópera de Paris Ballet), and Alphonse Poulin (Boston Ballet), in addition to the corps de ballet of Brazilian dancers. The success of the presentations made the show an annual program, and later this montage was recognised worldwide as one of the best ever made of this ballet.

Order of the British Empire – O.B.E. (Honorary Officer)

Dalal was named an Honorary Officer of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II

1st Winter Festival of Dance

Promotes the 1st Winter Festival of Dance which had among other creations, the first version of A Floresta Amazônica by Villa-Lobos, especially created for Margot Fonteyn and performed in the cities of Rio de Janeiro, Recife, Curitiba, Salvador, Porto Alegre, Sao Paulo, Brasilia and Manaus. It brought together stars of different nationalities and offered opportunities for new choreographic creations to be presented to the public.

She is invited to mount her pas de deux for the ballet Com Amor, created on the occasion of the 1st Winter Festival of Dance, for Anne Marie de Angelo at the Joffrey Ballet in N.Y.

Musical Composition Competition for Ballet

Set up the first musical composition competition especially for ballet.

The winner was the maestro from Bahia, Ernst Widmer Nhamundá and his ballet was mounted.

Chevalier de L'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres

Decorated by the Minister of Culture of France as Chevalier de L'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.

2nd Winter Festival of Dance

Promotes the 2nd Winter Dance Festival in Rio de Janeiro, Curitiba, Porto Alegre and São Paulo, featuring as in the previous year internationally renowned artists such as Natalia Makarova, Merle Park, Fernando Bujones and Anthony Dowell.

It features original creations by Dalal Achcar such as the Ballet Cenas Brasileiras, which tells the story of a young girl who falls in love with a street vendor, during colonial Brazil. Dalal surprises with a stylization of classical ballet, introducing capoeira and maculelê choreographies to represent popular celebrations. Packed by the music of Francisco Mignone and the magic of the duo Fernando Bujones and Merle Park, this show represented one of the greatest successes of the 2nd Winter Festival of Dance.

Something Special

Created a choreography especially for Natalia Makarova and Anthony Dowell, with music by Ernesto Nazareth and costumes by Nilson Penna, premiered in São Paulo.

The Nutcracker

Her version is presented in São Paulo.

1977

Something Special

American Ballet Theater performs her Something Special in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington and other cities with great success. Years later the pas de deux is danced by Marcia Haydée in several festivals.

1978

Carioca Tourism Week (Rio de Janeiro/RJ)

The most daring achievement of the Associação de Ballet do Rio de Janeiro was the presentation at the Carioca Tourism Week (RJ) of two shows in the bay of Praia de Botafogo, in Rio de Janeiro: Primavera à Noite and the complete version of Romeo and Juliet , pop music by Alec Costandinos, more than 80 dancers and attended by 70,000 people. It was the first time that a classical ballet show was performed on the beach.

China

At the invitation of the Chinese group “Women of China”, she travels with a group of 7 Brazilian women representing their respective areas with Dalal representing the culture.

1979

Cinderella

Mounts the musical ballet Cinderella, with music by Donna Summer launching Ana Botafogo with Alain Leroy and the Ballet do Rio de Janeiro at Teatro BNH with 55 sold-out shows.

The Nutcracker

Her version is presented at the Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro with the participation of Fernando Bujones and other international artists.

1980

Ballet – Art, Technique and Interpretation (Book)

Publishes the book Ballet – Art, Technique and Interpretation, by Companhia Brasileira de Artes Gráficas. The success of the book resulted in 6 editions.

A Carnival Night’s Dream

Mounts her second musical ballet, Sonho de uma Noite de Carnaval with Ana Botafogo at Teatro BNH with Brazilian popular songs.

1981

Director of the Ballet do Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro

Appointed as Director of Ballet at the Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro, and after complete reformulation of the Corps of Ballet, she creates artistic categories and forms the TMRJ Ballet Company with 70 dancers and 10 interns.

The season opens with Coppélia, presented for the first time in Brazil in its complete version, achieving unprecedented success at the box office and critics.

Then Giselle by Peter Wright, Romeo and Juliet by John Cranko, Diversions by Jean Paul Commelin, Opus I by John Cranko, Cantabile by Oscar Araiz and Something Special by Dalal Achcar.

Officialization of the Professional Course for Dancers

On October 5, 1981, Ballet Dalal Achcar became the 1st private school in the

country to have its curriculum approved by the State Board of Education and can since then graduate its students as professional dancers.

A Carnival Night’s Dream

Friend of the Royal Academy of Dance – FRAD

Receives from the Royal Academy of Dance the title of Friend of the Royal Academy of Dance – FRAD, as a member of the Academy.

Don Quixote

For the first time in Brazil, she sets up the complete ballet Don Quixote in 3 acts, receiving the Iberia/Spain Prize for her conception and choreography.

Ibero-American Dance Council

Appointed vice-president of the Ibero-American Dance Council linked to the Organization of American States (OAS) based in Washington.

Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro

Appointed Director General of Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro, a position she holds until the beginning of 1987.

During her time, she promotes the partial recovery of the stage and technical installations.

The operas Orfeo, Werther, O Guarani, Madame Butterfly, Aída, Porgy and Bess and the ballets Giselle, Gala Especial, The Nutcracker, A Floresta Amazônica, La Fille Mal Gardée, Gabriela, La Bayadère and Don Quixote are staged, among others in addition to several symphonic concerts.

Associação dos Amigos do Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro

Founds and chairs the Associação dos Amigos do Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro, an entity created to support the productions of the Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro. The pioneering format of the association served as a model for associations of friends of cultural institutions across the country.

Full Degree in Dance Course

Concerned about the situation of dance teachers, with the assistance of Gilberto Motta, Carlota Portella and the guidance of Professor Edilia Coelho Garcia, at the time her assistant, she managed to create a course and obtain approval by the Federal Council of Education for her 3rd Grade curriculum – Full Degree in Dance Course – with training in 04 years of studies for university students, teachers and choreographers.

Higher Education Course for Dance Teachers

Creation of the first Higher Education Course for Dance Teachers in the country, at Faculdade da Cidade (UniverCidade) in Rio de Janeiro, where she was Head Professor.

Cultural Package Project

Starts the Cultural Package project, which allows students from public and private schools to watch shows for free at the Theatro Municipal RJ, bringing more than 30,000 children, teenagers and university students to ballet shows. Students in gratitude sent work related to the experience in different forms, drawings, poetry, essays. An exhibition was organised with the presence of the President of Brazil, José Sarney, who at the time also attended The Nutcracker.

Teatro Amazonas

For three consecutive years, 1985, 86 and 87, Dalal mounts on ballet and Brazilian dance shows at Teatro Amazonas for an international audience on Sun Line Cruises.

3rd International Dance Festival of Rio de Janeiro

Holds the festival at the Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro, still under her direction, with the participation of the National Ballet of Cuba, Dance Theater of Harlem (USA), Ballet of Teatro Colón (Argentina), Grupo Danza Hoy (Venezuela), Twyla Tharp Dance (USA) and Grupo Corpo (Brazil).

2nd International Congress on Dance

Chairs the 2nd International Congress on Dance, in Rio de Janeiro, organised in collaboration with Dance Magazine. The congress gathered 4000 students and the best international professors of that time, doctors and physiotherapists specialised in dance, speakers and participation of guest artists of international recognition such as Marcia Haydée and Fernando Bujones. Tributes to dance figures such as Nina Verchinina and Juliana Yanakiva who received a sculpture by artist Roberto Moriconi as a trophy.

Decorated by the Governor of the Federal District with the Alvorada Medal of Merit.

Dance for Schools Project

Starts the Dance for Schools Project in partnership with the Rio de Janeiro City Hall, with presentations in several places, such as Teatro João Caetano, Lona da Cultura da Ilha do Governador, Sala Cecília Meirelles, Quadra da Escola de Samba Imperatriz Leopoldinense and Circo Voador, benefiting more than 8,000 students from municipal and state schools. For five consecutive years, this partnership has enabled the general public to access dance shows.

Ballet of Nations

With the help of a teacher specialised in popular dances from different countries, Theo Dantes, Dalal mounts the show Ballet das Nações, in an initiative of the UN project – Global Cooperation for a Better World – presented at Teatro João Caetano in Rio de Janeiro.

Something Nice

Choreographs the ballet Something Nice, presented at the opening of the final phase of the National Dance Meeting (ENDA) in São Paulo.

Dance for Schools Project

Once again, the Dance for Schools Project was presented to more than 6,000 students.

1989

Vive la France – Bicentennial of the French Revolution

Invited to the festivities celebrating the bicentennial of the French Revolution, participates with a ballet show attended by an audience of over 100,000 people at Aterro do Flamengo, with the participation of dancer Jorge Donn - who danced Ravel's Bolero by Maurice Bejart.

A Very Brazilian Christmas – Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas (RJ)

At the invitation of Bradesco Seguros, Dalal conceived the show Um Natal bem Brasileiro (A Very Brazilian Christmas).

Performed with the Ballet do Rio de Janeiro and the Ballet Dalal Achcar, it was staged consecutively until 1999, next to the Christmas Tree, in Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas (RJ).

Ballet Cardinal

Presidency of the Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro Foundation

Resumes the Presidency of Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro Foundation and presents, among others, O Circo dos Animais by José Varona, Giselle by Peter Wright, Coppelia and The Nutcracker with a new choreography for the prologue dances and the snow scene (1st act) and new sets and costumes by José Varona.

This administration ends with the show Romeo and Juliet, conducted by Mstislav Rostropovich in 2002, breaking historical records for presentations by the house and audience attendance.

90 years of the Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro

The celebration of the 90th anniversary of Theatro Municipal RJ is celebrated with a beautiful exhibition organised by Maristela Kubitschek Lopes with two consecutive days of open doors with continuous shows of music, ballet and opera. The event attracted around 30,000 people to the theater.

La Bayadère

Invites Natalia Makarova to stage the complete ballet La Bayadère for the first time at Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro.

Project  Education with Art – Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro

Conceived by Dalal Achcar, it enabled students and teachers, especially those from the public schools and middle and elementary schools, to have access to large-scale, high-quality shows at the Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro. With the intention of enhancing the educational and formative value of the appreciation of shows, expanding the students' cultural and artistic perspectives and encouraging a critical and ethical mindset, fundamental to the exercise of citizenship. A program was given in the form of a specially designed study guide containing multi-reference information, curiosities and recreational activities, aiming at assimilating the direct and indirect content of each show.

A Chance to Dance Project (2000 - 2004)

Performed by the Associação de Ballet do Rio de Janeiro at Ballet Dalal Achcar, Madureira unit. Through scholarships, the project technically prepared over four years of study, adolescents between 13 and 16 years old residents of nearby risk areas, as children's recreationalists and psychomotor recovery technicians.

The Companhia Jovem de Ballet do Rio de Janeiro  (Young Ballet Company of Rio de Janeiro) is a pioneering project for the professionalism of young dancers.

Created jointly with the Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro, the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), the Brazilian Dance Council (UNESCO), the Associação de Ballet do Rio de Janeiro and the professional schools: Centro de Dança Rio, Ballet Dalal Achcar and Maria Olenewa State School of Dance.

Creates the Theatro Municipal RJ Memory Series with biographies of artists who made the history of the Theatro Municipal RJ in the areas of music, opera, dance and choreography. Launches the first 11 volumes in 2001 and later another 39 volumes.

Companhia Jovem El Paso de Dança

With the sponsorship of El Paso company, the Companhia de Ballet do Rio de Janeiro becomes Companhia Jovem El Paso de Dança, bringing together a group formed by 12 female dancers and 10 male dancers in the age group of 17 to 24 years, directed and guided by Dalal Achcar and Mariza Estrella The Company premieres the show Superbacana – Dançando a Tropicália, at Teatro Villa-Lobos, with music by Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Torquato Neto, Capinan, Tom Zé, Rogério Duprat, Jorge Benjor and other emblematic composers of  the tropicalism movement.

Companhia Jovem El Paso de Dança performs at several festivals in Brazil.

Conto de Natal (Christmas Carol)

Companhia Jovem de Ballet do Rio de Janeiro (with its original name after El Paso left the country) presents Conto de Natal at Teatro João Caetano.

Mounts a reduced version of A Floresta Amazônica for the Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro presented in Belo Horizonte, Recife and Salvador.

100 Years of the Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro

Participates in the celebrations of the 100th Anniversary of Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro with her choreography Grand Finale, danced by the theater's corps de ballet.

Don Quixote

At the reopening of Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro, mounts her version of Don Quixote with the participation of Dorothée Gilbert, star of the Opera de Paris, Marcelo Gomes, star of the American Ballet Theater and Cyril Atanassoff, former ballet star and mâitre de ballet at the Opera de Paris acting as Don Quixote, with sold-out performances and extra shows.

Companhia Jovem de Ballet do Rio de Janeiro performs at Theatro Municipal RJ in the government program “Theatro Municipal à R$ 1.00”, accompanying the program celebrating Ana Botafogo’s 35 years on stage. The company performs in several other shows throughout the year at Theatro Municipal RJ and other theaters in Brazil.

Lausanne International Competition

Sponsors several young dancers for the Lausanne Competition.

From 2012 to 2014, Dalal worked to help young talents win scholarships, technically preparing them and paying for travel and accommodation costs to participate in the Lausanne International Competition.

Dance as Power of Transformation Project

Companhia Jovem do Rio de Janeiro

With the approval of her project “Dance as Power of Transformation” by the Vale do Rio Doce Cultural Institute, the Associação de Ballet do Rio de Janeiro with the Companhia Jovem do Rio de Janeiro returns performing in Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte and ends the year by presenting Conto de Natal at Teatro Riachuelo.

2022

Companhia de Ballet Dalal Achcar

Companhia Jovem do Rio de Janeiro changes its name to Companhia de Ballet Dalal Achcar.

The new cycle opens with presentations of Tempo de Dançar in Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte and Belém.

Premieres the ballet TAL VEZ with choreographies by Alex Neoral, in a season at Teatro Riachuelo, with enormous success with the audience and critics. Then is presented in Niterói and Campos - RJ and in São Paulo, where it receives ovation from the audience and the critics.

Premieres the ballet Macabéa inspired by the book “Hora da Estrela” by Clarisse Lispector, with choreography by Marcia Jaqueline in Petrópolis.

A season of 16 shows of Conto de Natal at Teatro Riachuelo- RJ.

2023

A Floresta Amazônica is presented with its very relevant theme for our days - protect our planet - in July, at Teatro da Paz in Belém do Pará.

In 2014 Achcar is a member of the council and vice-president of the Iberian-American Association of Dance Specialists, a body connected to the Organization of American States (OAS), and is a member of the Executive and Artistic Committee of the Royal Academy of Dance.

Achcar is the widow of federal deputy Luiz Fernando Bocayuva Cunha with whom she had a son.[ citation needed ]
