Melville was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia from 1950 to 1996. The district was based in the southern suburbs of Perth.
First contested at the 1950 state election, the seat's inaugural member was John Tonkin of the Labor Party, hitherto the member for North-East Fremantle since 1933. Tonkin served a long career in parliament, going to become Premier of Western Australia from 1971 to 1974. When Tonkin finally retired at the 1977 state election, he was succeeded by fellow Labor candidate Barry Hodge. Hodge served four terms before his defeat at the hands of Liberal candidate Doug Shave.
Melville was abolished ahead of the 1996 state election. Shave went on to become the member for the new seat of Alfred Cove.

David Oliver Tonkin was an Australian politician who served as the 38th Premier of South Australia from 18 September 1979 to 10 November 1982. He was elected to the House of Assembly seat of Bragg at the 1970 election, serving until 1983. He became the leader of the South Australian Division of the Liberal Party of Australia in 1975, replacing Bruce Eastick. Initially leading the party to defeat at the 1977 election against the Don Dunstan Labor government, his party won the 1979 election against the Des Corcoran Labor government. Following the 1980 Norwood by-election the Tonkin government was reduced to a one-seat majority. His government's policy approach combined economic conservatism with social progressivism. The Tonkin Liberal government was defeated after one term at the 1982 election by Labor led by John Bannon.
The Division of Brand is an Australian electoral division in Perth, Western Australia. Brand was first created in 1984 and is named after Sir David Brand, Premier of Western Australia 1959-71. Brand governed Western Australia at a time when the state was developing its new mining and industrial base.

John Trezise Tonkin was an Australian politician who was the premier of Western Australia from 3 March 1971 to 8 April 1974. A member of the Labor Party, Tonkin had been a minister in the John Willcock, Frank Wise and Bert Hawke governments, and a member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly from April 1933 to February 1977, making him the longest-serving member of the Parliament of Western Australia as of 2021.
